  3. Cracking looking pup Good luck with him. ATB Dave.
  4. Sorry for the late reply Rory (been away) She is a Terrier beagle X Cocker, but more like a cocker (luckily). Just got your PM and will reply ASAP. ATB Dave.
  5. I totally agree, i think the key is having your dogs fit before your first shoot day, i feed the night before as usual and nothing while hunting, if you are working them twice a week they should be fine, any more or they are looseing condition put them on 2 feeds a day on non hunting days. Mine hunt all year round so fittness has never been a problem. ATB Dave.
  6. I use my terriers when we are shooting the wood piles, we have about 20 dotted around my permission and it takes a hard terrier to get through them and its always interesting what might come out. This is Ted He is also good at dispatching Crows And Buster is 8 months now and getting used to shot, so he will be having a run out this season. Terriers wouldnt be my first choice to take shooting because of the lack of control compared to a gundog, but as i have them for other types of work anyway its good to give them a go now and again and like running them th
  7. Theres nothing better than a real mixed bag, well done mate. And here's to many more this season ATB Dave.
  8. He is a nice looking dog mate, i am pleased he is coming on well for you. ATB Dave.
  9. Good luck with the litter Mick. ATB Dave.
  10. Sorry ned it wasnt one of your dogs , it was posted by a lad from NZ i think on your page 16, just i know alot of lads use Lab blood in there pigdogs and that one looks alot like a lab. ATB Dave.
  11. Pointer of this site runs GWP Lurchers and they are real handy dogs. ATB Dave.
  12. Sounds like you are doing something right Ned. Was that a Lab i saw on one of the first few pages and if so how dose he fit into your breeding program, what size do you breed for, they look about 25 - 26" is that about right. Dave.
  13. Cracking looking bitch good luck with her. ATB Dave.
  14. Thanks for all the replys. She is coming on well and whether she is retrieveing from water, hunting up rabbits for the gun or bushing with Terriers and Lurchers like last night she is making a versatile hunting dog, so i am well chufft at the minuet. ATB Dave.
  15. All the HPR breeds can be used, although some take to it better than others, the GWP is better equipt with haveing a better jacket, although it may not be the best choice for someone looking for a first time dog, i have had both and will be having another GWP in the future but if i was you i would go for a lab mate, easy to train and biddable. Good luck and let us know what you choose. Dave.
  16. Your right Pointer, for something classed as vermin it dosnt taste bad. A little tough but not bad at all. ATB Dave
  17. Thanks Mickey, it has been warm over here and she was very pleased to get into the water for a cool off, but they were heavy geese for a small dog but she has the heart of a lion ATB Dave.
  18. I work a Lab, she is not quite 1.5years but doing well, i use her mainly on rabbit and other vermin, but she works well on game birds and she had her first warm water retrieve at the weekend (just started a thread with some pics) it was a couple of canada geese and she handled them no prob. You say you are looking for another dog, what type do you have or have had in the past. ATB Dave
  19. Nice, very nice mate. Good luck with him. ATB Dave.
  20. My dog Paddy now And when he was a bit younger ATB Dave.
  21. Got a new farm to add to my permission and it holds a nice Lake / pond with a large number of Geese which the farmer wants gone ASAP, most are Greylag which will have to waite until September, but until then its picking off a few Canadas that will be keeping the farmer happy. So i have been doing some water training with fern over the last few weeks but she has never retrieved warm game from the water and i di think what she would make of a big Canada. So after checking it out with the BASC me and Pointer off this site had a look down with the dog for a look about. Pics are not the best
  22. Well done stanley, you get what you put in mate. ATB Dave.
  23. He should be OK to start on low jumps at 7 months mate, i started my Lab at about 6 month, get him hunting through woodland with plenty of fallen trees and branches, he will start going over branches a couple of foot off the ground without even relising, then move onto low fences that you can step over and so on, but no barbed wire while training the pup. ATB Dave.
  24. My mate has a spaniel like this which he has given up training he has no control over the dog and she hunts where she wants she still is the best finder of game i have seen and we have still had some good days shooting over her, so you can shoot over them and have a good day, but it is limited and very frustrating at times especialy when another dog which is trained is added to the day, then you dont want the wild spaniel anywhere near you or your dog. Good luck with it anyway and if it puts game infront of you gun and you have a good day that all that matters. ATB Dave.
  25. I have all the Edward Martin DVD's and would recomend them to anyone Dave.
