I lived in HK for a few years and had the opportunity to learn Cantonese,I didn’t bother as I found it an ugly language,I can curse fluently,and once got a free Chinese takeaway in a UK Chinese after I wished the owner happy new year and asked for my Lai see.I learnt a Filipino dialect (binisaya) in HK,it was easier and had a lot of Spanish influence.

Both my kids are bilingual,one of them is sharp as a blade,his fiancé is also bi-lingual and was a deans honour lister in Uni. The other one thinks he is clever but isn’t,he is a lazy f****r.

I was in Chamonix the ski-resort earlier this year,went into a really nice restaurant,waitress greeted us in perfect French,I heard her speak Spanish,she is from Essex,proper Essex accent,went to work as a chalet maid 15 years ago during ski-season and never left.

A girl I went to school with married a Libyan student who attended Sunderland uni,she moved back to Libya with him,been there for years and apparently speaks flawless Arabic which is quite a feat for someone from pennywell,she was an interpreter for a Brit diplomat once.

IELTS is quite difficult mate,years ago I did a month long Arabic course at the ILI in Cairo,one weekend I helped out at a TEFL class for somali refugees in Egypt,enjoyed stuff like that (I was shit at the Arabic).

Best thing anyone can do is invest in your kids education,motivate them,open their minds to the possibilities,because the employment market is changing,I was at a party last night,the majority of people there were African/Asian immigrants,all educated,spoke to one guy who had a masters,an Asian bloke from poverty who had 6 siblings all graduated to escape their homeland and all now in the states/Canada earning beaucoup dollars,as more skilled immigrants flood into the UK there’s going to be pressure on the skilled jobs market with real competition.

Almost 40 years ago I hadn’t long been left school,my parents house was raided as I was on the salmon nightly when they were running,I was doing my own D&P with B&W prints.Police seized a box of hunting photos,one of which was on the front of the local paper a few days after the raid,I said I bought the box of pics from a bloke at Haswell plough market as I was interested in them,no face no case.

My nephew has one,I have been offered a few opportunities over there,even know a few blokes who were sending Cali weed from LA to Bangkok when it was first legal as Japanese/Taiwanese tourists and loaded Thai kids wanted the flavours,there’s brits/Americans now over there growing.
