  1. The thread was about good stockmanship pal not about the best way to rear a litter the problem lay in the fella that posted the thread doesnt exactly know what good stockmanship entails he may come back later after he has read up about it on the internet i think No the thread was about opinions on what stockman ship meant to others....I have no intention of looking on google or anywhere else....your the one being all cryptic.....what are you a farmer ?
  2. This was in relation to the caring for a litter, if you want to expand on the care of your working dog be my guest
  3. Ok reading the culling post this came up in the debate. Being a good stockman....what exactly does that mean to you? How do you care for your bitch before and after she whelps. What role do you play in ensuring the bitch and her pups stay in fine fettle. Any litter I've bred over the years begins life indoors in the warmth away from draughts for the first two weeks before transferring them to the pen under a heat lamp. The bitch is fed twice a day with good quality food, often a mix of dry food and a whole cooked chicken. The pups are wormed at two weeks old and again at six weeks
  4. If you see the difference in a litter of say 6 pups as opposed to 11 has on a bitch and the litter then you would know that food aint gonna make the difference. The were 10 in the last litter my bitch had....she was fed twice a day on good quality food. The litter had no adverse affect on her well being.
  5. I once brought a farmer in with a fox call
  6. I heard dotty was in the mod boot camp on a 12 week course
  7. Most folks idea of "stockman ship" is to put the bitch in a draughty shed in an old blanket to whelp and feed her once a day.
  8. If only every one thought like this the well being of the bitch should always come before that of the pups a proper stock man can see when the number of pups is pulling the bitch and litter down and act appropriately there aint nothing big or hard about it, it is-just stockmanship a skill sadly lacking in most. Wouldn't a good "stockman" ensure that the bitch has ample food and care to compensate for what the pups take out of them?
  9. Trouble is that nowadays there's so many young kids getting into lurchers, they have no one to mentor them, no one to teach them common sense, field craft, care of dogs: no wonder there's dogs getting f*cked all the time, then passed on as no good, or jacked because they're carrying an injury that the owner isn't even aware of, too mean to take dog to vet, just pass it on as no good. Whin will mentor young hunters for £50 a pop
  10. There's times when it's more productive to go on your own and others were good company is a must. It's good to watch another dog work as well. These days I like to take a bagman with me.
  11. It winds me up when people come onto a thread saying shit like you did, offering no opinion of your own. Just slating lads for saying what they think. If you don't like this "Internet bullshit" then honestly mate, you don't have to come on here. Some of us think it's a great forum and get alot of good info from it. And we go out with our dogs and ferrets too Aren't you doing the same here? If you don't like what I write don't read it simples!... I think your taking the Internet stuff a bit too serious maybe you should spend more time with your dogs and ferrets
  12. Jeez never knew Mason had passed away.....shame!
  13. i would stay clear of dogs that are slow or late starters, not saying there no good, but lifes to short to be waiting on dogs that take 2 seasons to get going And therein lies the problem and we wonder why so many dogs get passed on
  14. Someone forcing you to come on the forum? Aye the wife forces me so she can watch strictly....wind yer neck in
  15. I suppose the stoners don't really give a shit lol
  16. That's one way to look at it what will you do when it's time for your dogs to hang up their spurs?
  17. for a 1 nighter thats all fair an well, but to have an unfit dog out working REGULAR is something only a fool would do an expect anything other than disaster Again it depends on your definition of regular ie is a dog that gets 20 + runs over the weekend fitter than one that gets two or three runs over the course of a week?
  18. Only use high protein if you work the dog hard. I use chudley's greyhound mix dogs love it. These feeds are complete so you really don't need to add anything else just make sure they have plenty to drink.
  19. Don't you just long for the days when you got your dog and went out and did what you did without the bullshit Internet
  20. An Asian by the name of pascal ....you couldn't make it up lol
  21. Some good points there mate it's a bit more difficult if the dogs only been used for bunnies
  22. Absolutely nothing all I'm saying is unless your getting pick of the litter it's a bit of a lottery. Would you be happy with 2nd or 3rd choice or taking the one nobody else fancies because you heard the parents were decent? i have done exactly what you said an its worked an its failed so yes it is a bit of a lottery but there is higher chance of winning the lottery with that pup than any old pup out the admag an all because you wanted it now, 2nd 3rd an even last choice dont come into it imo, i have seen a few litters over the years an yet iv never seen the folk getting the pups fi
