RATE THIS CROSS AND ITS ABILITIES
derbylad1 replied to ferreting king's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Getting a lurcher and seeing how it turns out is like a lottery, sometime you get a gooden...sometimes you dont. I'd say thats 50% of how the dogs turns out, the other 50% is how the little dog will be brought on. Moll has a 1st cross staffy/whippet. very handy little dog that i have witnessed first hand, will graft all day. -
There is nothing to worry about with air bubbling mate...very natural to happen with an open wound. 2 - 3 days and it'll be gone
-
I would never kill a ferret if it had retired...after all the years that little stinker has put in for you.....if it was gooden...think of the hours, days, weeks of good hunting it had brought you
-
thats a real shitter mate...feel for you. Try and put it down to experience...did you know the lad, who's permission it was? Time is a great healer, if you loved your hunting with lurchers, then give it time and get back on the saddle in your own time.

unfortunatly i do give a f**k mate. i know what you mean about dicks giving folk stick on here, for the sake of giving someone stick. but i really don't agree on swapping dogs over for the sake of it. He might have a real genuine reason for wanting to get rid of the dog. i mean i've even done it myself, but thats because would've died if didn't rehome one(fighting bitches). hopefully he'll give us good reason why he is moving the dog on....i might even be eating my words. Hopefully i am,. -
i have 6 jills. I'd day 3 are outstanding working animals...2 are really getting on a bit, 6 maybe 7 years old. one just given to me before xmas and has shown some excellent promise that is only a year old. i do have the work for 4 ferrets....but i could honestly say 3 would be enough for me. unless you have outstanding, excellent workers i dont see the need to breed. if you want them, just have them from others. there are loads about for free come august.

well if you get a dog that will graft it bollocks off you. then you decide one day...f**k it i'm gonna get another and sell you. thats what is wrong...if you give up on dogs so easily then dont bother having one in the first place. Maybe its just me and i'm going a bit soft, but my dogs are my life and if they weren't doing exactly what i wanted from them, then maybe i should look at myself before the dog. maybe if i'm not doing something right, its maybe nots the dog's fault. too many dogs just getting passed about far too easily. poor f****n mutts. -

Good man!!! hey they're only rabbits. Good luck with her anyway mate
-
yep ya right mate...some right dogs, lurchers are alright tho. That second pic...the lad looks oddly excited for some reason...lol

f**k me you were being serious about the barbed wire....cruel b*****d. Its simple!!! you train the dog to retrieve(and any other discipline for that matter) to the best of your ability, get help on the way if you must. If it dont retrieve after you've tried everything and put 100% into the dogs training, then accept it...it won't retrieve. If it retrieves, but is hard mouthed, then unfortately thats the way it usually has to be...live with it. Good advice is always welcome, as we're always learning no matter how long you've in this game....barbed wire is not the way. what do you use your rabb

A good marking dog is worth its weight in gold. If its good, trust it...if ya dog dont mark, then don't put the ferret to ground. If your ground is lacking that much in rabbits, maybe put some extra time into gaining more permission, especially in july/august when the rabbit numbers are at their biggest problem. Baigbailey...It says your in Staffordshire, wheres abouts? i might have some ground you can run your dogs on. if your not too far away -
a dog will derives its energy from animal fats, therefore feeding this will give your lurcher the extra bit it requires for a hard night lamping. so if you know what time your going out...work it out from there.
-
how old are they mate?are they this years youngens? just a bit excitable...should calm down soon enough.
-
yep...100% i would "not" go out if my dog had just fed. Firstly, would you feel like running after a meal. Secondly his performance will be restricted, he won't catch, his confidence may get affected and making your permission have lamp-shy rabbits. Thirdly and most importantly, running on a full stomach can cause bloat, which can potentially kill ya lurcher.

would this be ideal for ferreting????
derbylad1 replied to charlie nelly1's topic in Ferrets & Ferreting
it looks like an army issue one. good for a few years those. -
lets put it this way...if you had your balls chopped off, would you wanna shag owt?
-
i agree...good clean out, super glue and i have used spray plaster that worked a treat on a cut pad. never goto the vets, they'll charge a fortune to stitch, that just wont work. i know its hard to do with season nearly at a close...but lead walk for 7 - 10 days..dog will be fine
-
your dogs done well...its used its brain and decided not to get smashed up and work another day for you. too many dogs go straight in, take punishment and then cant work for a while. he's done his job....he's a gooden mate
-
Got a big mole job coming up.......any one have any traps for sale. Barrel(tunnel), scissor or talpex please Cheers
-
They can't kick off again..they're too skint. Their economy is f****d!!! they want because of the billions of barrels of oil surrounding it. I've served in the Falklands in 1992 and its a gorgeous place apart from no rabbits, and the women go from 13 to 50 years of age....none in between. too much inbreeding for my liking.
-
good do there lads. wouldn't fancy digging amongst those rocks tho..ouch!!!
-
lucky the dog was switched on enough not to grab the wrongen
