Don't charge, treat it as a permission and be thankfull you have some good ground. That way when you can't make it there for two or three weeks he won't drop you like a brick. Tell him you want a tin of pellets a year for the airgun, that's all I do. H

Caught several jays in larsons using acorns or monkey nuts as bait. Not used one as a call bird though. H

I believe Protrapper sells scent lures and baits. Google his site for more info. H

I have used the Collarum quite a few times to remove foxes from gardens in town. Only one misfire so far and also had it attacked by a badger which it didn't catch. The stripey took a nasty smack in the face from it but continued to rip the bait off regardless, (I had the night vision camera set up). The reason it didn't catch the badger (I believe) was that the angle of pull was different to that of the longer legged fox, I think it would have taken the badger if the trap had been set on a banking though. I still use wires elsewhere, but find the Collarum really good in an urban environment.

As a distributer for Magnum I can tell you that there is no way to give a discount on numbers of traps. Distributers are asked that everyone sell the traps no lower than a given price. Of course some people sell them for more but no one can sell them for less. This is to stop the really big suppliers undercutting everyone else with their buying power. If you contact Magnum directly they may be able to do a deal for you, but us smaller guys are limited in the price we can charge. H

Mine arrived today from Idleback chairs. Very pleased with the service and with the goods so far. Of course it needs to be field tested first. I will mainly be using it on air rifles for rats and rabbits at night. I opted for the full kit which includes the IR torch. My only gripe is having to fit a weaver rail which has raised the sight by about half an inch, I am sure I will get used to it though. H

+1 You get what you pay for as with everything else. Invest in some half barrels from the flat pack company and some genuine talpex traps, they will pay for themselves many times over if you are any good. The cheap traps are false economy, cheap for a reason... H

Fox snares are use once and throw away. Steel cable would be virtualy impossible to retension. Not that I have tried. H

No Nod, I won't be at Pestec this year. Snareman will not be attending and I don't think a lot of others will from what I hear. Mostly it will be poisons etc which is of no interest to me. I am sure all the real pesties out there will still find a lot to their liking though. I believe there is to be a hawking demo and a ferreting demo too. All the best H

Defra recommends setting the deer stop at 9 inches, everyone else with sense sets them at 10 inches, 9 inches is too small. H

2ft Rats........Fact or Fiction?
Holdaway replied to Paul in North Lincs's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
Biggest one I know of was taken in a Fenn. 21 inches from the tip of the tail to the tip of the nose about 24 years ago. H -
I use rabbit portions or pigeon breasts for bait with a little attractant peppered around. So far I have taken 6 foxes with it in gardens around town and the wire is starting to show a kink but still usable. I do not have one set all the time and only set it when I am asked to. I have had one misfire, the trap was sprung with no catch, but it does say in the blurb that they are about 90% successful. H

I think you are talking about the Collarum trap. Very useful in gardens etc, as I have found out. They will not replace the good old wire noose for foxes though. The price has recently gone up too as that price you mentioned was a sort of introductory offer. I hope the keeper gets many more. All the best H

I can't argue with that Ian, truth is they always bring the crap out in Scotland first to trial an idea (poll tax being one). Lets hope with a change in government there may be a change in their outlook. Stops on fence wires are completely pointless, so guess whats next? No fence snaring will be the next thing... H

Actually in Scotland it is illegal to have in your posession a locking fox snare even as an ornament, snareman had to allpy for written consent to own one for demonstration purposes. Now, whether this law applies to rabbit snares with stops on I don't know, but I do know it is NOT illegal to own any king of trap in Britain, it is also not illegal to sell any kind of trap, but only certain traps are approved for use and to use anything else IS illegal. I am not sure where the legislation is posted on the internet, but those of you in Scotland must now face the fact that any snare without a

It is now illegal to use snares in Scotland that are not fitted with deer stops. You will have replace them all I'm afraid. Snareman tells me the ban came into effect on the 10th of March of this year. H

For sale, 100 x 6 strand brass rabbit fence snares made by snareman. Only to be sold in lots of 100 at £20 per 100. These are for sale as the law has now changed in Scotland with regards the use of deer stops on snares and Glenn is having to replace all of his snares. These snares have no deer stop and so are not to be used in Scotland. PM me for details. H
