where to buy snares if you live in America
Holdaway replied to redneck56's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
I SET AT 4/5 INCH FROM GROUND TO BOTTEM OF SNARE DEPENDS ON CROP OR RUN HOPE IT GIVES YOU SOME IDEAR TRY EBAY Set them no lower than 6.5 inches from the bottom of the noose to the ground and higher in longer vegitation. H -
Just somethng different to try thats all Ian, I have seen the Americans use them and thought I would give them a go. That was a bad catch, the 116 didn't kill the animal as quickly as I would have liked, as you can se it bit the front jaw of the trap, a little adjustment is needed I think. H

Hi all, a friend of mine knocked me up some trap pans out of scrap aluminium. What do you think of them? Here is the set up. They seem to work at least. H
-
Yes they are legal for rabbit control. H

Snareman told me that when he trapped mink here (Scotland) and sold the fur, the buyers said it was the best quaility fur and among the best presented fur they had seen, and knew that Glenn had trapped in Canada by the way he presented the fur. You would think that the fur would be thicker and healthier in the colder regions but to have high quality fur in Britain compaired to the likes of Canada and Sweden is just amazing. Excellent pics you put up there of the trapline, hope to see more of them. H

I had a similar experience a few weeks back when we had all the snow. Released unharmed, even though it killed my call bird! H

FIxing a deer stop on a fox snare
Holdaway replied to Mutimer's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
Hi Mutimer, measure 10 inches into the noose from the stop at the eye and hammer in place. Do not over tighten as this will damage the snare wire. The stops are very strong as they have a thread inside which helps grip the wire. All the best H -
hi, this year ive been yousing 1mm 7x7 galvinised wire and have found it excelent for snaring rabbits it doesnt tangle and twist ike brass and foxes dont break it when they scank your rabbits well worth trying you still can,t beat the brass wire, for cost, versatility, its also very pliable and strong when spun up firmly, thats how all the pro. trappers use it for pegged snaring out on open runs, the foxes may pull the rabbit carcase from the wires at times and leave the heads, but they don,t break the wires, and a simple double knot , acts as a simple ingenios swivel system, the americans

Rabbits alive in Snare .. ?
Holdaway replied to New2This's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
If anyone wants to see how it's done by a pro snareman, then come along to Pest Tech on the 4th of Nov at the motorcycle museum near the NEC in Birmingham. Glenn Waters, aka snareman will be giving snaring demos on foxes, rabbits and rats. As well as giving demos on how to fit the components of a snare together and how to despatch rabbits in the correct manner. Anyone interested can have a go with the master himself and even get to keep the the snare you practice with! All the best H -
JohnB is your man four Fenns and TrapWorks can supply direct from the Magnum trap co. H

Rabbits alive in Snare .. ?
Holdaway replied to New2This's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
ffs. Grip the rabbit across the hips with one hand and around the head with the other just behind the ears and under the chin. Pull firmly whilst tilting the head back. It's quick, it's painless and it's easy. Practice on a couple of ones already dead in the snares, you can easily feel the neck dislocate so there is no wondering if the job was done right. atb H -
Very true Ian. Snareman recommends only using breakaway snares in places where there is no chance of entanglement. Also the fact that the fence wire itself has some 'give' in it effects the working of the breakaway link. When snaring rabbits snareman recommends an 8 inch peg which has no movement whatsoever. On fox snares you need a solid anchor, either a long anchor bar holding the snare down or a quick link collar around a tree base such as the one snareman invented (see the pinned section). Also no shock spring should be used with a breakaway device for the same reasons. P&G has

We haven't had a drop of rain since the start of August down here. Well done on the catch Micky, a lot of people struggle to catch in the longer stuff. H

The deer stop on a rabbit snare is set at 6 inches. This closes enough to hold a rabbit without killing it and also preventing the death of cats etc. A deer stepping into the noose should be able to walk free as the noose which will not close fully will simply slide off the animals leg. Snareman has measured dozens of these animals in all kinds of situations and has come up with what we hope will be a standard for the future. All the best H

cheapest place to get breakaway eyelets
Holdaway replied to ellir0305's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
Sorry to hear about your cat Rob. The most important feature of your snare would have been a deer stop, which would have prevented the noose from closing fully. I personally would not recommend changing the design of the snare though. When using breakaways you should use a solid peg which has no movement at all, giving the breakaway link the best chance of opening. The new breakaway link design that Glenn has come up with is available from me, let me know how many you want and I will send you some to try. Remember, the deer stop is as important as the breakaway link. If you use the spring
