  1. Most greys that go as pets [ are NGRC trained dogs] that have been raced at one time or other.?

As i said i helped a bloke who 45 greys, and YES they make great pets. But if they start fighting

it dont matter who to blame, they do alot of feckin DAMAGE :wallbash: . One day when i was helping

him out, i was walking two [ dog+bitch] 58lb bitch, 69lb dog. A feckin cat run across the yard, they

seen it and went APE SHIT, now i am 6ft 13st 7lb a fair size, and it took me hell of a job to stop

these mad feckers from killing each other, and i am fairly strong guy. Regards muzzle for your dog

its up to you,? i know what i would do. :victory:

Agreed that a lot of retired greys have come from the NGRC,but once they've been adopted they are not under any NGRC rules. It is then up to the new owner wether they muzzle them/it or not.

As someone who has owned and trained greyhounds for over 20 years I would fully agree with you that when they "start" they can take some stopping. I had one that was extremely firey,if when he was out a walk and saw a cat, rabbit or small dog and obviously couldn't get to it he would attack the dog next to him.He had to be muzzled everytime he was walked with other dogs, also the other dogs had to be muzzled incase they retaliated.

    Spot on :victory:

  2. I think that is the most f*****g waste of police time ever,, Raiding a house for hare coursing,,This is Great Britain at its best. :wallbash:

unbelievable it seems to be the only thing there good at waisting money

    WANKERS :censored:

  3. I could be wrong, but greys have to where a muzzle in a public place.? If they are loose and they went for another dog, more so a small dog . You would have alot of shit, from owners and if it got back

to the greyhound kennels, because they are trying to promote them as good pets, and its the last

thing they want :o . If i was you keep him on the lead+muzzel, its what they are used to. I helped

a bloke with greys [45], and if a 65lb greyhound kicked off, it can do a lot of feckin damage :(

    its not worth it ;);)

As Max has already said it's an NGRC rule that greyhounds must be muzzled in a public place and only applies to NGRC trained dogs.

Kay you were in the right  your dog was on a lead and stationary, the other dog which was obviously not under control approached you. With this in mind I'm struggling to understand why some of the members are pointing the finger at you. :o

  5. Is there a fool proof security method???? The best thing is to keep yourself to yourself and take the best precautions you can, alarm, security lights, high fences, guard dog, paddlocks, no set patterns etc etc. If someone is really determined and has time to plan it then all these methods are redundent. Keeping dogs inside isn't an option to most lads and even then are they safe?

Dog theives are the scum of the dog world.................

Spot on, :victory: and if they have to deal with guard dogs, they will shoot+poison them

  6. You mentioned her good nose and stamina but have you checked out the most important thinga bull should add to the bullcross GAMENESS. Funnyhow Dave sleigh is letting his dogs cover bulls and bullcrosses when a few years back he wrote that bulls were potential timebombs, maneaters and dogkillers and that there was no place for bull blood in the lurcher world.Money cant half make some people change their views.

dont think dave has ever been in it for the money. i have known him since i was a nipper over 30 years when he used to go coursing with my dad so he would let me use one of his dogs regardless and is one of the best dogmen i have ever known. he could make a good dog out of a street mutt, the bitch has been tested as would a bullx lurcher would and by the time she is bred from probably a lot more than most. there is only one true test of a bulls gameness amd how many that produce the best bull crosses have been. probably 10% i would bet.

Yes he knows is stuff, but he did say bullxs were not the way to go with lurcher breeding.??

  7. how many of you lads have bred 1st crosses using a bull bitch..would have thought the usual way would be to use a greyhound bitch but i have a bull bitch and by using a greyhound stud a top class one could be sought rather than a flapping bitch given for free. my bitch about 21" will hunt like a foxhound and can run 10 miles behind a bike for fun. wont breed till next year and am a good mate of dave sleight but worried his stud dog would be a bit big .. maybe better with a large greyhound/whippet..your thoughts please

Why not use his other stud dog [ blue ], it is got whippet in it , and he as worked it on most stuff,

and size wise i think its 23-24ins 40lb, just right for your bull bitch. Ask him ;);)

  8. hello all, all this recent debate over bull x,s has started the cogs turning and got me wondering about all different lurchers...what i have been wondering is about the versatility of a doberman x grehound.. the shape, size and musclature of the doberman would appear to lend itself perfectly to this mating and so im wondering if anyone has either tried it, or is trying it and the results of such a cross...and before anyone starts slating me for this post, dont bother......cause i dont give a damn...

If it's shape, size and muscle you want in the cross wouldn't a pure greyhound or a 3/4 greyhound 1/4 bull be a better option.

The reason you cross a greyhound with another breed for a lurcher is for drive and hunting ability / instinct. A doberman possess neither.

As for collies and pit bulls, they're full of drive and hunting instinct.

Silly crosses are one of the reasons dogs homes are full of lurchers, JMHO.

And Temp= nervousness, my sister-in-law had one. A good guard, good with family, but very nervous with any body else :( . Its a big prob with the breed, i know you can nervousness in any dog but why look for it.?????

  9. hi iv been looking for a leather slip lead every where but i can only get nylon can any 1 help me please

strong stuff on ere mate hell sort ut cheap as chips made how you wnt

S.S are spot on, ive used leather ones before, but S.S slip leads work just as good , and will last you longer+ and cheap as well ;)

  10. Ive had lurchers 25 years+ , and in that time i must have seen most x's work. We all know what x

is best for Certain quarry, but to me a Well Bred colliex grey is a real good lurcher. Ive had and seen collie xs catch all game in the UK, on a Regular Basis. ;) They really are [ jack of all trade's and a master of none . ;);) ] I love lurchers :icon_redface: , and every x can do a job, but if there is such a thing as a alrounder , a well bred collix grey must come close. ;);)

  11. I got a lurcher a couple of month ago and i have just started taking it lamping and when i slip it on a rabbit that has squatted down it waits until it runs before trying to grab it and hes missing them. Hope you lads can give me some advice

not all lurchers will take squartter's, alot like your dog looks for movment in the beam. When you get your next squatter, walk your dog up to it, get your dog to the back of the rabbit, when the rabbit gets up slip your dog. It should learn take them , give it time. How old is your dog, it takes a couple of seasons to know the crack. ;)

  12. L.S.,

My dog is a pleasure to own and work but lately he did not retrieve 2 catches. One of them I found but the other one was eaten by crows when I went up the next morning. It is also bugging cause the work is done over water a lot of times and I don't want to jump in myself.

He has a very good routine, comes back automatically when he got or lost what he was after so I can't really say anything or reward him more or less than normal. He has very little will to please and can't be rewarded with food.

Tennisball or something to practice retrieving is useless too. He does that playful 1 time and then looses interest.

    What would you do?

    L.

If He has constantly retrieved, and this a new. i personally would check his Mouth Teeth etc....... *if his running style and Movement are still the same* too may have a bearance

i have always trained like a building block.. so if one block fails i can go back - rebuild and Hopefully all will work out

Good Luck L hope it sorts out ;)

With retrieving, lurchers its not natural.? Ive had them retrieve for 3 seasons great, then i have

found alot will kill at the catch, and leave it there. :o I think they all love the chase [natural]

thats the running dog in them. With other breeds in there, apart from gundogs[labs ..........]

even collies which i like in a lurcher, as clever as they are its not natural to retrieve?

If they bring back GREAT, but ifthey wont at what ever age, there is feck all you can do about it :(

as long as they catch [natural] they have done there job. ;);)

  13. A great read :clapper::clapper: loved it. I had a Rottie once: brought up with terriers and lurchers: great nose and huge drive: would smash through cover like a bulldozer. Sadly she was from crap stock and her cruciate ligaments, hips and elbows meant that I rehomed her to a pet home as she just couldn't take the work. Like so many badly bred Rotties nowadays I'm afraid.

Spot on, why people want to use badly bred dogs to make a lurcher.???? A lurcher life is very hard

as it is, they have to be Fit,Agile, strong,Quick, you only GET this from SOUND dogs . A lurcher job

was to catch quarry that could run at 30-40mph, even doing pest control[ lamping] they have to catch it first. You only get this off SOUND+healthy working dogs ;) not macho guard breeds which are

prone to health problem's :( i used to have bullmastiffs, good guards but not healthy animals even

bull terriers[pit] were having health probs in the 80s, you have to remember what a lurcher was

    bred for.??? ;)
