Nice little pup, is she just salukix grey or what.? Should fill the bag with her next season.

Nice bit of sport, does the whippetx grey do alot of fox control.?
-
A few interesting points raised.
To start with, I wouldn't entertain anything that has a KC registration, these are not proper working dogs, but animals bred to physical type, they add nothing to a working dog apart from good looks. I would say that applies across the board. I have had someone bring out a show type whippet and it looked odd and was useless. Would rather go hunting with a stuffed toy, at least you could throw it at the rabbits.
Next point, rabbits. Thats it, rabbits. Cant run them on anything else, they just aint big enough. All theoretical of course and based on pre ban experience and the vain hope that the next government will change the law back again. Whippet crosses struggle on hares, even on the lamp. You may pick up the odd lucky run but it wont be on a regular basis. Foxes, same again, too small. And I 've seen whippet crosses on foxes, game little dogs that they are will have a go but I dont think its fair. Its more akin to dog fighting, a drawn out affair that isnt good for the image of hunting, the welfare of the dog or your pocket when you have to pay to have the dog put back together at the local vets. Yes, I know someone is going to say they have one, or have seen one that will do all of the above and more, and I'm sure they are around but are the exception rather than the rule.
Next point, why do you want a whippet cross anyway. That dont hold any advantage over a greyhound cross. I know they are smaller but why do you need a dog so small. They may be slightly quicker from the off, but not much. They may be more agile, but again, not by much, and an experienced lurcher doesn't follow the every turn or jink of a rabbit anyway. They seem to anticipate when and where to strike without the need to run around in ever decreasing circles. A bigger dog can stand a higher work rate for longer too because they're not going everywhere flat out.
Now for the cross itself......If you're considering the whippet cross I'd assume rabbits are the quarry. Collie cross will be fine, as will a bedlington cross. I really rate irish terrier crosses over beddies. What matters is how much experience you can give the dog and how you bring it on. Maybe an emotive thing to say but there are more bad owners than bad dogs.
The Irish Terrier sounds a good x to a grey, the Irish have a good coat, they are leggy+fast,
and hard little feckers. I wonder why they are not used more, for lurcher work.??

Well done , keep at em

hello bird with the weaton cross getting popular over in
england now there should be some good ones
to try and they can be top class .
have a couple of dogs with deerhound and either
weaton in their blood or old type irish terrier in them.
you will get good and bad but i have seen some top class
deerhounds over the years with a dash of weaton in
them to put some fire and just terrier mentality in them
hope this is some help.
macker
Thanks Macker, yes they sound a good x

NOBODY THEN.???

Just read about the deerhound+ deerhoundxs, just wonder if anybody ever use a wheatenx
grey to a deerhoundx grey.? Ive seen colliexgrey xdeerhoundx grey work, and it was a
very good dog, but never seen a wheatenxgrey xdeerhoundx grey work. Anybody.??

When I first started out out with lurchers a dog was valued for its pot filling abilities. A dog that could take the full spectrum of fur and feather was considered the ultimate working companion.
Nowadays the ultimate lurcher is seen as the most macho looking bullcross that can soak up punishment and slaughter foxes night after night and never get sickened.
The old quotation: "The unspeakable in pursuit of the uneatable."comes to mind.
We've lost our way a little. Give me a dog that can put meat on the table rather than a fighting dog/ running dog hybrid anytime.
Personally I'm sick to death of 16 year old morons posting sicko photos of their fox catches with dogs that would be better served hunting lions or some other larger game. The bull cross has done nothing for the general lurcher owner other than give us a bad name. Discuss.
PS. Insult me as much as you like but don't call me an anti, that is below the belt.
Theres many a bullx has put collie crosses to shame with puting grub on the table... its not only foxes they can slaughter...
Ive had both colliexs and bullxs, and both make good lurchers. Both were good on rabbits+fox,
colliexgrey =70lb bullx grey=70lb, but i think the colliex was more agile, and could catch
that bit more than the bullx. Bullx is ok as long as you use them for the right job, and not
everybody does.??
-
nice pics guys, i do like this breed but do you think they would benifit from being x to a grey?
DG
yes, but not to much.? as been said the down side to them. A colliexgrey x deerhoundx grey
make a great lurcher, a 1/4 deerhound is plenty. This x was very popular in the 70s

you know what thet say, you pick your friends, you dont pick your parents

Brave bloke , i would do same. If i didnt it would never get it out my feckin head Some times dogs can get you down+do your head in but there is nothing
better than a good old workingdog, you wont get a more loyal mate.
-
slip in the red then off game caught then back on, myself i woulnt lamp with out one
spot on, very good when starting the season, but towards the end of season alot of rabbits
get lamp shy and some times it dont make much differnce.?
-
i was hoping to do foxs and rabbits and a bit of ferreting
A well bred colliex grey, will do all that.
-
Did anybody else watch it tonight?
They were on about these African weaver birds (Quelea), and the method of pest control was fecking mental!
100,000 birds in one 'BANG' & it still didn't make much of a dent in the number!
Yes, very good, its on next week as well
-
Well done you+dog, it can only get better now. I can remember my 1st rabbit with my pup,
he as had now 65 from 14 nights , and he is still only 15 months old. Keep at it .

It's ok everyone posting that they should hit this farmer in the pocket etc, kill his sheep blah de blah..... The bottom line is, if the dogs weren't on his land they'd be alive today. I'd be as raging as the next guy if it were my dogs but then again, I wouldn't be as irresponsible as to let it happen in the first place.
Everyone to a man on here has slatted the farmer and they all want his guts for garters, the guy is trying to scrape a living from sheep farming ff's.... He is only protecting his assets. It doesn't take much to make a sheep abort and all sheep are pregnant at this time of year, what is he to do? Allow this "pack" of dogs to worry his sheep? Does he wait till they kill a few before he reacts? EVERYONE of us relay on farmers to maintain the countryside we know. It's these same farmers that allow us on their land to do the sport we love. Aye, it might be big to post that you'd kill em etc, but I reckon the guy was within his right.... Before you say, what if it was your dogs... It WOULDN'T be my dogs in that situation!!!
No mate, to me this post about killing dogs [ because of money]. All my dogs are broke to Stock,
and every dog ive had in 25 years as been, but dont feel sorry for any farmer, because what he looses in stock, he will get back easy eg ..... from the goverment. Ok the dogs should have been
under control or on a lead, but he was wrong what he did. And most farmers hate lurcher lads,
i walk my dog by sheep every day on and of the lead, and the landowner is fine with that. But
as i said stock is just money to a farmer, my dog worth alot more than money to me.
-
im sorry to hear that the farmer has shot this mans dogs , its a shame and i bet the mans gutted but if a farmer did this to me then im sorry but the farmer has a lot more to lose than me and i would be going to prison now as i would kill every 1 of his sheep now !
Spot on, what gets my back up, is all stock is bred for the dinner plate, and all means to a farmer is
money. They dont think of any animal like we do, even there sheepdogs are just a tool to them, and
they shoot them once they are to old to work. Go back in the night and kill as many as you can,
and hit him were it hurts in is pocket. It might make him not so trigger happy next time.

There are dogs that can and do, do them single, but they 'aint common!...thet Grace bitch is summat special though...she will catch hares, and she will hang onto a bear!...crazy mo-fo, thats for sure!...
These guys can get on quite a few 'yotes in a day aswell, so they have to think of the numbers as well...yeah, you could run single handed, but the dog would only be good for one!...these guys do it for pest control, but they do it to see the dogs work aswell...there are some VERY good dog men over here.
Jay..
PS...Scotsman, i would love to see what them Aluant hybrids would make of a good yote!...that would be awesome!...i should think they have the tools for the job!
Great Dogs, do they ever use bullx greys on yotes, as they have plenty of pits out there. ?
or do stags do a better job, as a 45lb yote must be alot tougher than a 20lb dog fox? and thats
what some bullxs were bred for as a fox dog in the UK pre ban?

GREAT , my lad is 22 now, but i can remember when it was like that on xmas day when
he was little

Never hit your dog with your hands,
It will become scared of your hand and wont like giving you things to hand,
Use a walking cane and alittle tap should do ,
Then it will dislike the cane an not you
Tom`
Spot on, i carry a stick and only hit once, and it never forgets so it done the job. And i have never
had to hit it again.
-
yes; he's had 9 foxes to date.
Thats not alot for a three old dog , of that breeding.
lurcher and terrier do thay really mix
in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Posted
This is one of the drawback's working terriers+ lurchers together , it can be great fun But it
can and does feck your retrieve up with your lurcher. I know some lads will say, there terriers
are well trained and dont pinch the catch from the there lurchers, maybe but most Do.
