Xmas is for kids, think of the poor little feckers in hospital. If you have the time+money
have walk in there on xmas day, with a few presants. you Will think differnt about xmas
from that day on.

The only way anything gets used to anything is being around it often. Familiarity makes all the difference. I think sometimes the bigger fuss you make of something, the more it becomes desireable, know what I mean? If you were told you weren't allowed to look at something, you'd try even harder to see it, right? I've seen lurchers who are afraid to look at sheep, they still do but they give it a quick fly glance pretending they aren't looking. Now, they only do this in your presence, once released on a hare, they might travel several miles(fens especially). Chances are they will encounter sheep at some point(unless on the fens) and if they have a grudge towards said animal, who knows what goes through their head. My advice is to get her round sheep as often as you can out a walk under control. She'll soon get bored of them.
Spot on, i still walk mine by them every day, and he is 14months old. You can never really
trust them a 100%, some can be great with sheep, but get excited by lambs.? it must be size and
movment thing . I train them the same way with both, and get same result's, which is fine. But as
above keep taking them what ever the age

same as above realy how do you stich your dogs and when do you know to stich.
Simple......dont ! .....get someone who knows when why and how its the sort of thing you can easily do more harm than good .
Go to the VET

How old is the dog? what you done with it so far???
Some dogs never take to squatters mate, mine'll do them when he wants to, other times he'll just stand waiting for it to move, but some will never do it!!!!
Spot on, i was out last night, got 7 from 13 runs, 4 were squatters, but he only takes them when
they move he his a ix collie grey, and alot of colliexs are like that. Still its 7 in the bag.

People have the wrong idea about Ridgebacks; when they were used for hunting lions, they NEVER went in ! They were used to bale the lion until the hunter got there with a gun ! They kept well clear of the lion, or they wouldn't have lasted a minute. It looks like that one is trying to bale the badger, but a pretty poor display !
Cheers.
I'd wager the dogs used to bay a lion over a hundred years ago are a far cry from the dogs mincing around the show ring today...........
Spot on , even with your game bred breeds, some never make it.

How often do you see a dog for sale aged between 8 to 18 months or even older, with the words ready for work, or needs bringing on. Or in some cases works day night, retreives to hand 100% genuine. Now call me a cynical old fart, but that would start alarm bells ringing. More often then not what that means is the dog for one reason or another hasnt made the grade, probably entered too young, or ruined in the hands of some inexperienced clown. Who would sell a fully trained dog for the knock down price of say£200. If you put a true value on a dog of say 18 months, the number of hours spent training, the cost of jabbing them up, feeding and bringing to peak fitness, you would be talking thousands not a couple of hundred. Myself i have always bought a pup, im very selective before i buy, but that policy has always worked out for me. I realise sometimes circumstances dont always allow people to keep their dogs. Has anyone bought an older dog, and what did it turn out like, good or bad experience, did it live up to the sellers description.
An excellent post. I agree 100% with everything said here. It's like the advert, 'free to good home'. What exactly does that mean? How the hell does the person know it's good home? It just gives a fast way of getting rid and frees the owner up of any guilty conscience .
If I couldn't keep my dogs (I accept that it can happen) I would search all avenues to get them rehomed. If it wasn't going to be a working home with someone experienced and a true dog lover I would look for a family pet home. I would hate to think of some inexperienced a/hole treating them like s-- t and feeding them muck.
If the right home was found, the dog would be for free. No amount of money could buy a good working home. What does £200 buy you, certainly not one of my dogs!!
Fortunately I'm like youself, i don't want a ready made dog. I want to train it from a pup the way I want. With some dogs it hasn't turned out the way I wanted, but i haven't sold them on as something they weren't. If suitable (so far they always have), they were offered free to a pet home. i always keep in touch with the new owners. In fact I'm presently kenneling a bitch that I rehomed a few months ago for the whole xmas period whilst her new owners are on holiday.

Two good posts here.
I have, myself, last year, brought a adult dog, that was not good, i had to rehome her to a pet home, she is doing fine.
I also, had a whippet pup, that yaped for Ireland when on the lamp, no matter what i did, so she is now with a good freind, bushing ect in the daytime, a semi pet home and is happy as larry.
I would never buy, a adult dog again, will allways get a pup from good stock.
Frank.
Same here, and if it all goes wrong , you carnt blame the dog
-
Depends on the occasion, Stewed mainly, as it becomes more tender.
I find it tends to dry too much if roasted, but its well on a bbq if frequently baisted.
How do you like your pies??
Spot on, Stew and it tastes better if you keep it a couple of days

What can you say life is feckin cruel at times.

collie x best alrounders you will ever come across!!
VERY TRUE, a 1x or a 3/8 collie 5/8 grey, will take any thing, a top dog
-
iv keped both, bull and collie x iv had a bull x that took deer and fox pre ban,but it never had anymore pry drive than my collies, just more kill power is all and most dont notice pain, always enjoyed my collies, can do anything a bull x can do if bred and trained properly, just thought id post this topic, it seems to me that most people run bull x's all i want to know is why?i did used to like these dogs but now just seems like everyone has them and ive gone off them, what can you get from a bull x that uyou cant get from other dogs ? in my opinion there is nothing, what do you think
karl
karl as i keep bull crosses i may be biased but the answer is easy - preydrive- a good bull wont let you down - ive used them for lamping and drawing and if hes a good one he wont shirk the issue
Spot on, same here both xs were good. ive found my colliexs more agile than bullxs
both were the same weight 70lb , both were 1/4 xs. Then my 3/8xs bull 78lb and collie 76lb
same again, colliex more agile. As they say its got to catch it first. ???

I asked my vet about frozen rabbits, he said worm will still be there , it will Dormant in the muscle tissue even when frozen for what ever time. He said you would be better of boiling the meat, boil up to 2 hours, and feed on or of the bone. I do this and never get worms, the boiled bones wont hurt but i feed of the bone. I know alot feed raw, but thats what he told me.??
-
Its about time to, Maybe they will breed healthy dogs from now on, and not feckin crap dogs that carnt walk or live more than 8 feckin years. but money talks
-
very true , why do you think you see lotsof young dogs for sale as for the acd thyel be limited i think for pace but will have there uses for robustness
True whin limited but should flush or retreive most things,no hare coursers for sure but should be able to run all day or night, robustness in heaps was part of the plan mate.
nice healthy looking pups, as you say not your run of the mill lurcher. But maybe a bit more
running dog in there, and what a good alrounder they would make.??
-
WTF does it matter what they do for a job it's just a feckin job nothing else. you have to pay the mortgage somehow.
I don't have any particular problem with Police in general, no need to, but come on, it's NEVER "just a job" to them and I for one would rather scratch a living as I do than get paid to enforce this countries laws these days.
your so right ITS NEVER JUST A JOB , obbsession maybe or to enforce todays laws one could say its an illness cause im fecked if id sit there and agree when told " right boys gona nab a few dog men today" knowin there is phedophiles and drug dealers peddlin DEATH to families amongst us .
Thats easy, going after dog lads [ running dogs. pit bulls] is a EASY TARGET
-
Like most hunters on here, try to go out with things in the dogs favour [ not a full moon]. I have been out in the past with a F.M and caught stuff, but feck me you make it hard for you dog, they can
see+ hear you coming a feckin mile away With lamping you after take the good+bad, a F.M is
ok for them things in the trees

Great looking dog,

The place you want to work them ie the country, most of the people that live there dont want them there. If you own a lurcher, in there eyes you a poacher, it doesnt matter if you are or not.?? It will
never change, it was the same in 82 as it is now. A lurcher in the town is just another dog.
-
They use them in OZZ, maybe the lads from there can let you know about them.? But i dont think
they would be peds?, might be deerhoundX wolfhound hybrid's. Same as there Stags, 100 years
line bred deerhoundX greyhound dogs.??

shock collar
in my eyes to many people are using these...... soon as the training of a dog goes a bit wrong its lets shock the b*****d, whats happened to ironing a dogs faults out the proper way with more training??????
True, this is the prob when you some times get a older pup [12 months] is still a pup. that you buy ??
just keep on with the recall [ day+night]. Ive had a few like that, over the last 25 years+ .
when you go lamping again, do your recall right then, start with just a few yards then build up.
Do it with say 6-7 recall 's to the lamp [spot ] then try another field for rabbit, if still hunts up and
he prob will stop. And just keep going back to recall training, when the are like this , really you
want to for get about rabbits for while. It will come right in the end, just give it time.

which do u prefer terrier or collie in ur dog
advantages and disadvantages of both
Well ive had colliexs, bullxs, bitzaxs, and all were good dogs. But if ive pick one x, i would say a well
bred colliex grey.If you can get a good one, they have good feet+coat, good stamina, good nose,
a fair pace, agile, a strong tough old dog , you get from a 1x collie grey. The down side
to them is that they can be very hiper, so they need a ton of work. The terrier xs [bull ] were good honest workers, that would try to catch what was in front of them the
down side for me is there agilty, both were 70-77lb dogs they did well for there size. Ive had
colliexgrey the same weight as the bullx [70lb] and it was far more agile? At the end
down to each pup or dog you get, you get good and bad in all xs.

is it just me or has any one else noticed the lack of rabbits now cum to think of it pretty much most quarry seems to be getting verry hard to find compeared to afew years ago gettin hardto have a half decent night out now whats goin on
yes i noticed there's not so much as 3 or 4 years ago , and yet you still have people
with 2 or more lurchers, have they really got enough work for all there dogs.????
