Try Viking Arms for a Ruger part, assuming it works with K-Hornet as well as your regular Hornet

Stainless/Blued barreled actions
Mr_Logic replied to danebrewer10's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
A gunsmith I was talking to recently said that the wear for each type of barrel is different. A stainless barrel is better for rapid shooting because it resists throat erosion better, but he said that a chrome moly barrel (blued) will generally wear the bore less than the stainless, provided that you don't regularly get it hot. Lilja Barrels' page (http://www.riflebarrels.com/faq_lilja_rifle_barrels.htm) agrees on the throat erosion but doesn't mention the bore. I am no gunsmith so I can only go on what gunsmiths tell me! -
Right OK then... See www.federalpremium.com and the rimfire section for the drift figures. The reason is pretty simple - HMR leaves the muzzle at 2500 fps, give or take, LR leaves the muzzle at 1050 fps. Both bullets have similar ballistic coefficients, with some 22LR bullets actually beating the HMR. This means that the HMR does lose energy, as a percentage, quicker than the LR, BUT the starting velocity means that over a typical 22LR distance (100 yards) the HMR is way in front for wind drift, because there is significantly less time for the wind to affect the bullet. Contrar

after looking at that i might be a bit to windy for a .17mhr, as they are very wind affected. have you considered a .22lr, cheaper on ammo, less wind affected but less range, you can still take them a bit over 100yds though 22LR is considerably more affected by wind than 17HMR. Can't be arsed to write why, please Google it...

1/4 MOA clicks are absolutely fine.

One other thing. Have you thought about a Leupold VX-III with fine crosshair? You can get the 6.5-20 or 8.5-25 for far less than a Nightforce. I bought mine because I didn't trust the VX-III at the time, but I've since got a 6.5-20 as my Meopta proved faulty, and it's been very good thus far. The view is clear and crisp, and the adjustments precise. Nightforce IS better, but going on Sportsman pricing, you can pretty much get 2 Leupolds for one Nightforce. Last year's F/TR champ runs one, so they can't be all that bad.

No it doesn't work like that. Your reticle should work in the same dimensions as your adjustments. For example, you have a mildot ret and MOA adjustments. You see your shots, say 3/4 mil off. How many clicks do you need with MOA to get that right? Your calculation would get you close, but if you observe the same thing and you have MRAD adjustments, you dial 7 or 8 clicks and then shoot. Job done. The NP2-DD, NP-R1 and NP-R2 are MOA reticles, so you want MOA adjustments with them. The mildot, MLR rets are in mils, so you want MRAD adjustments with them. The fine crosshairs tell

Refresh my memory - how far are you planning on shooting this thing? Plenty of people shoot 22x at 1000 yards so I would think you'd be OK. Regarding reticle, if you can (I couldn't) get one that is the same as your adjustments. So, if you have MRAD adjustments then get mildot or the other mil-based one they do. If you get MOA, they do a couple of good fine MOA rets too. NP2DD is one you love or hate, it's basically just a dot. I'd have loved to get it, but nobody had it at a sensible price.

You won't have a problem there, all of my permissions have houses round them - I shoot HMR on a cricket club in the middle of a town. It's a nice safe round, bullet very frangible.

Don't give him ideas!
-
Yes I think so. You don't want to be welding or glueing the scope base in there - the screws work just fine. Any old Weaver mounts should work, so long as the 10/22 has the weaver & dovetail rail. Scope itself, Bushnell Trophy would be OK I guess.
-
That stuff works then! Shame my CZ doesn't like it. I will make up some 168gr SP loads...

Many people say you need 1/8th clicks, but many people use NIghtforce NXS scopes to win competitions and they have .25MOA clicks. MRAD = milliradian, same technology as mil-dots. Basically if you have a Mildot reticle and MRAD adjustments, you dial in what your reticle says. Makes life much easier and stops you doing maths in your head all the time! If you can get the MRAD one with a mildot ret, do that. Zero stop - a function which allows you to dial back to zero without having to check the scope - you keep dialling back down until you reach the stop. A nice-to-have.

Cup of tea, biscuits and details of all that land - all he could possibly want! Don't think you will have much trouble there!

Boresnakes are good for a quick once-over, but they don't clean properly. For that you need patches, a rod and lots of different solvents.

any tips, other than not to shoot myself?
Mr_Logic replied to JPTfellterrier's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Get your dogs to work the cover, then have a shotgun handy - that's very good fun and combines both. You need to get the eye issue sorted - being able to see helps your shooting no end! are you left or right handed? Most people who are right handed are right-eye dominant, and most who are left handed are left eye dominant. This means that even with both eyes open, one eye's image is preferred by the brain. For example, I am right handed, and often shoot my rifle with both eyes open. I can do this as the brain superimposes my right eye's image in preference to the left, so I keep periphera -
If you're going to spend money to kill foxes, then HMR is NOT the one to buy, even if you want to keep to rimfire. 22WMR is normally granted by most forces for fox, it's humane out to <cough> 150 yards IF you can shoot it, otherwise keep to 120. You could also just shoot your 22LR at them, that works quite nicely too. Body shot to 75 yards, head to 100, but again you need to place those shots accurately so if you're not doing it on targets first then leave Charlie alone for now. In terms of legalities of it, you are IN THEORY OK on a vermin ticket IF you don't have anything w

The 22 Hornet was used for stalking, although I think roe rather than red. Due to low recoil, mainly. If you look at 22 Hornet factory cartridges, most of them are 45gr softpoint, and trust me that don't expand quick, it's not a varmint load! Faced with a roe deer and a different law, I would happily knock them over with body shots out to 150 yards. I can shoot well enough to do that, and personally have no issue with such shots by people who know what they're doing. Now... 243 vs 308. Well I shoot a 308, but that's because I bought it as a toy and decided I preferred the rifl

You mean you want an adapter to go from Weaver to dovetail? if so, why? Get a weaver mount - they are better. I am assuming you're talking airgun/rimfire mounts here...?

Do you really save money reloading?
Mr_Logic replied to danebrewer10's topic in Reloading and Gun Maintenance
SPS tactical load, blimey! Well, it likes almost everything! Thus far I have had the best success with a 69gr Lapua Scenar on top of 23.5gr AA2230, CCI 400 primer, FC brass. Shoots between 1/4 and 1/2 an inch at 100. It also likes the load I use in my CZ 223, which is 50gr Vmax, on top of 25.4gr AA2460, CCI 400, Prvi brass. But it shoots < 1 inch with all the homeloads I made, except possibly the 55gr FMJ load, but that's around the inch mark. Very happy with that rifle! -

Mr_Logic replied to danebrewer10's topic in Reloading and Gun Maintenance
Reloading... Hmmm... well, I've loaded several hundred rounds now so still quite new, but... Yes, you save money on cost per bang. In fact, you save a fortune. But, you fire off more ammo, so you can get it *just* right. However, I've trounced the very best factory loads in all of my rifles, and I've not been trying for very long. You get massively improved accuracy AND you save money, so it's well worth doing. BUT if you shoot in high volume, prepare to lose your spare time! -
They were £1750, that was pre-price rise, so if I had to guess I'd say £2250 by now.

Methinks we ought to get a lane at Bisley for an afternoon/morning - I have 223, 22 Hornet, 308 (possibly twice) to zero up as well...

Replacing my 22 rimfire - advice need
Mr_Logic replied to Gimli's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
They work.. you'll get the odd jam but keep it clean and it should be reliable enough.
