The preesure of a shotgun cartridge differs greatly from cartridge to cartridge, even the same brand and make cartridge can differ each time. It depends on the following, Gauge, length of cartridge, primer type, type of powder, how much powder, how much shot, fibre or plastic wad and what type of closure it has. So quite a lot of variables. You can find out more by looking at the CIP website which deals with all the proofing in the UK and much of Europe. Regards SS

Yet another Fox
SportingShooter replied to SportingShooter's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
if you are shooting foxes then why not post a picture so we can see them? not that i dont believe you. what calibre rimmy 17 or 22 and what make ammo do you use in your other rifles I am not confortable with posting pictures of anything dead on the internet as they can be abused too easily, even with a rifle in the picture, they can be photoshopped, I do have photos of last night but ill just keep them for myself. They only make a .17 HMR. I use Hornady 40gr Vmax and Remington 50gr Accutips in the .222. -
I gained a new permission at the beginning of this week, A farmer friend of mine has a fox problem. He keeps mainly free range laying hens, around 400 or so and has a small flock of sheep, which are late lambing this year and have only just started. Its neither of these which are causing the problem, he also keeps ornamental or exotic poultry, Swans, Geese, All Kinds of Duck and some prize Chickens(Silkies, Brahmas, Buff Orpintons etc) On Friday night, a fox managed to get into one of these pens and killed 30 of these birds including a massive Buff Orpington cockerel and a pair of America

Gamekeepers Are the Only Ones Killing Birds of Prey.
SportingShooter replied to SportingShooter's topic in General Talk
I would love to be there to shout them into the ground. This is exactly what we need to be doing, get as many people as possible to turn up to give the anti's a show of just how many people are physically in their way. This will undoubtedly go the way of group with the most representatives, we should not be the ones left out, it directly affects me and others everyday. Come on people. SS -

Browning Medalist 20 bore selling it
SportingShooter replied to barrym3's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
In that case if you get £400-£450, i wouldnt consider you hard done by. Good Luck SS -
As I drove to work this morning, Radio 4 on as usual, the national news came on. I listened to rest of the usual political infighting and then I heard a report from the RSPB. The RSPB are calling for an end to birds of prey being killed on grouse moors in Northern England and Southern Scotland, They publicly singled out gamekeepers as protecting their own interests. No other cause was mentioned or even another possible cause, I have been reading about this in the shooting magazines over the last months and as yet I am unaware of anymore than one conviction and yet all the blame goes to gam

Browning Medalist 20 bore selling it
SportingShooter replied to barrym3's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
From looking at the picture, I would say a conservative estimate of £400-£500, some will go for less some more. This is a very rough estimate as I have not seen the gun. The Brownings often hold a good price and seen as its a small bore multichoke it may well fetch more than that. How much did you pay for it new/second hand? This estimate will depend on its general condition, condition of the bores, and how old the gun is. Regards SS -
Good Stuff arcpest, it seems someone got what they wanted from them, surprised they let you have a rimfire specifically for fox (dont want to spark a debate about rimmy's not killing foxes) but Licensing depts dont normally like them. All the Best SS

Rimfire Poachers
SportingShooter replied to SportingShooter's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
On a large estate local to me, there is a large number of deer and they have been poached by people using long dogs and .22 r/f. They are often found by a ranger, who I know well, with bits hacked off them, the bits the poachers want and just left. I went shooting with him on friday,we were after crows and pigeons, and we came across a fallow doe which was wounded by a .22, in a terrible state, it kept moving away each time we tried toget closer so my friend duly put it out its misery with a clean shot. These people defy belief, I am glad I do not have deer on my ground or it could get worse -
The only thing I can suggest is to look on guntrader.co.uk. See if you can find the make and model of your gun, have a look towards the lower end of the price range to see if you can find a match. Beretta's do hold their price well but I have never bought, owned or shot a 25 year old one and so cant really comment. My only other advice would be to ask your gunsmith next time your in the shop and see what he says. Regards SS

SportingShooter replied to Foxgun Tom's topic in General Talk
Good luck with everything Tom, Im sure he'll be fine and waking his mother up at 3am as usual in a weeks time. The staff must be confident and experienced so im sure there is nothing to worry about. Best Wishes SS -
yeah ok i knew i was going to get an answer similar to that! I have looked through the general licence's and no comment is made on the general licence as to using electronic callers! as usual it seems a pointless legality! The legal bit of it is in the Wildlife and Countrside Act 1981, this prohibits the use of electronic calls and other things such as mirrors and dazzling devices for shooting purposes.

Browning Medalist 20 bore selling it
SportingShooter replied to barrym3's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
It really depends on the amount of shooting the gun has done and how old it is, but as you say it is in good condition. Second hand ones seem to be going for about £500-550 on average, if you post some pictures I could be able to give you a slightly more accurate answer, but without seeing the gun it is difficult, Small bores are still fetching a premium at the moment so you may get a good price for it, Have a look on guntrader.co.uk, and in the back on the shooting magazines classified ads to see what others are asking/fetching. what ammo is best ?
SportingShooter replied to andygarland's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
All rifles are different and will like different ammo, I have a 452 in .17 HMR and I tried Remington, which it did not like at all, Federal which were OK, and then Winchester which it loves, They are around £10-12 a box. Unfortunately it may be the case you need to test a variety, try the Winchester see if they work. Federal, CCI and Hornady all make .17 HMR ammo but I cant comment on them Regards ss06 -
Nice one sounder jnr, Good to see young people coming into their sport in the traditional way, learning from dad. With all this dog work and impressive shooting, dad will be out of sport before long. Keep it up SS

Foxy at it again.
SportingShooter replied to SportingShooter's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
I've had a few with the .222 now and found it to be excellent, I posted a report on the others last week. That first shot with the set trigger wont be my last, I think it is light enough as it is, I imagine less than 1lb of pressure. Will make things easier for zeroing and long range shots,. -
On a more serious note, I do indeed want to see the Labour Party ousted and destroyed. However, I dont think that Hunting will be returned, neither straight away or within the first Parliament, this is due to the Conservatives being the only likely party to replace Labour, this party said it would repeal the Hunting Act when it was elected in its 2005 manifesto, that has now changed to a free vote, if they have a large majority and enough Tory MP's 'Toe the party line' then it may well get through and be repealed, but there are always high tensions over Hunting and this may lead to a back benc

Foxy at it again.
SportingShooter replied to SportingShooter's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
I dont think i'd use it if I were walking around, too risky then, it takes a mere whisker of pressure as you know. I thought i'd try it out seen as i was in a high seat and was stock still, I didnt activate it until just before the shot. It may have helped last night John if, like me you tend to move too much at the moment. Regards ss06
