  1. People still eat young rooks, the squabs in the nest as they are about to start flying but the older rooks and carrions will be tough as old boots and taste awful to boot. One other thing, the fact that the farmer has asked you to shoot crows and you are hoping to shoot pigeon will not bode well with him, he has asked you a specific favour. The choice between a crow or a pigeon and really you should shoot the crow, they are what is causing damage at the moment. A fleeting pigeon with nothing else about, then it matters little. I would not feed crow meat to the dogs the stuff they carry is
  2. If everyone felt like that, my vote doesnt count, then you would not be able to sit back and let things carry on. I can see what you mean in that you cant find a candidate that will do something for you, or you think will do something for you, but if we all felt the same way then the extremeist parties would rise and even gain substantial power as the type of people who vote for them never miss a poll and i'm talking the BNP, the Communists and the UKIP, can you imagine these running the economy? It is personal choice if you vote and who you vote for. There is never going to be a situa
  3. How about traps FN, if you cant find ferreters. The Fenn Mk6 might be worth a try. If not you will have no choice but to keep shooting them(what a shame!) or get yourself a .22LR with a moderator and subsonic ammunition, even though a firearm, it is virtually silent, the people in the houses or the horses would not bat an eye, they would not know you were there.
  4. If you find that the party or parties that have been voted into power are not delivering what they or you want then it is up to YOU to vote and change things, there is way too much apathy in this country over voting and its why the current Labour government only has the support of 40% of the people, 60% of those who voted didnt vote Labour and yet are stuck with them, Its the First Past the Post system, it depends on seats not votes. If you look at the London Mayoral Elections, the voting system is Proportional Representation where no votes are wasted. It defies belief to moan about a party
  5. Recently, when walking around an old and long disused release pen on my shoot I found the wires to two Fenn traps and pulled the traps out of the ground, who knows how long they have been there, they were both unset by the way. The both need attention but are salvageable, one works reasonable well while the pressure pad on the other wont move, I have no choice but to oil it with something like WD40, my question is how do I get rid of the smell so I can put the trap back down. Regards SS
  6. Afraid I cant help you with the ferrets, I just shoot them, mostly with the .410 and now with the rimmy. If you need a hand give us a shout not far from you at all. SS
  7. Would certainly be interesting if Boris got in Jasper, different kind of politics altogether. TG you know who to vote for, it doesnt matter as long as its not Red. Anyone else been or going to go?
  8. A lot of good ground around there. Plenty of good cover for my favourite quarry , the woodcock.
  9. I live on the Gower, but I shoot in West Wales, not far from Carmarthen and seem to get good results, normally its just two of us and a pair of dogs hunting Woodcock and the odd wild Pheasantand always plenty of bunnies, occasioanally we shoot pigeon and crow over decoys down there. Do you hunt or shoot? SS
  10. I am curious about how many of you will vote given the chance today, it is your only chance to have your say. If you dont vote today and then moan about your local council or Mayor of London then im afraid it is your decision not to take part. Regards SS
  11. I also keep my Shotguns and Rifles together, I have a seperate ammunition safe which I keep the rounds and the bolts of the rifles. It was a Small Electronic Safe from Screwfixdirect.com My FEO was perfectly content and was happy for me to keep the Section 1 and 2 firearms in the same cabinet.
  12. I would always go for variable, personal choice perhaps but it will give you a choice of how YOU want your target to be presented, whether close or far.
  13. Another fine brand of scope, go to a shop is your best bet and have a look through all the prospective ones.
  14. Quite right John, IanB got it right when saying, If you cant be bothered to write a decent post then you are not welcome here. SS
  15. And there's me thinking there would only be two people in this thread I quite agree John, I have shot through one on the lamp and it is an excellent scope, I nearly bought one for the .222, but I got tempted away by the FAD of a new Swarovski. As you said in another post, spend as much as you can't afford on a new scope. Either of these makes will do you well. Regards SS
  16. For that sort of money I would be looking at the Leupold VX III, something like a 4.5-14x50. These are excellent scopes and, in my view, will give more piece of mind on a centrefire. If your looking second hand then I imagine you could pick up a very decent high mag Swarovski or Zeiss, but the Leupold is perfectly adequate.
  17. I can see where youre coming from Ditch and whatever the natural outcome, the human outcome will always be to protect native species and so the Grey will be head of the list, the Pine Marten, thats an interesting one to ponder, whether they will go against the Greys or give up on them in favour of easier prey. And as you rightly say, the countrymen and women will be dealing with this problem and notice the outcome of the Pine Marten question long before the faceless beureaucrats even know a problem exists with their idiosyncratic ideal of holding onto power. I hope you never see one an
  18. With the Quad, they can be had as a set if you have all the relevant paperwork or with just one calibre barrel. They do indeed screw on and the magazines come in two types one for the 22LR/.17HM2 and a seperate one for the HMR and WMR. It would be hard to justify all the different barrels so having the set is unlikely. Depending on where you shop then the Synthetic will cost around £450 new. Hope this helps SS
  19. If you want to own useable Slugs in the UK you must have them as a condition on a Firearms Certificate, you can, as with any other ammunition buy components for the loading of shotgun ammunition without a licence but you may not own assembled slugs without the relevant condition. Whether the .410 slug has enough power to drop a wild boar each time I find also questionable, the 12 bore slug would be an improvement a rifle even better. The majority of police forces are very reluctant to grant slugs as they are so lethal. I have shot .410 slugs on a range in the USA for targets. Winchester ma
  20. From what I can find out about the .22-4000, it is as you say a .224 bullet in a necked down .303 case with 4000 fps MV. It is also known as the .22 Rocket or .22-303 and is a wildcat. It has a slightly smaller case capacity than the .22-250. It is also sometimes has the suffix of .22-4000 Sedgley. Thats all I can find out so far. Regards SS
  21. This post wasnt intended to be a boxing ring. Meant to highlight a problem. SS
  22. This article, from the BBC news website details the thanks of conservationists, inparticularly Landowners, Gamekeepers and Farmers for their help in controlling predators and managing habitat. Nice to have some recognition for a change, unlike the RSPCA last week attacking gamekeepers. Regards SS http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/7374803.stm
  23. Congratulations, Wish Mum, Dad and Baby all the best for the future.
  24. I have a few fenn traps out around the place but i prefer to shoot them, just more enjoyable, I have a purge twice a year, once at the end of the shooting season, the other at the end of April, Early May, to clear out the younger ones. From then on its just bagging what is around when I happen to be there, this is how I bag most of mine. Ballistic Tips are lethal on them, I have shot a few with the HMR now and even one with the .222 and each time they just implode, talk about humane despatch. I wouldnt wish the greys on anyone or country, they are a menace to all native wildlife. If
  25. I have heard conflicting reports on the nighteater but as I say I have had no problems. If I were you I would save as much as possible for the centrefire and see what you can get, how much you thinking?
