Cheers buddy. I'm no expert dog man. Just trying to learn the ropes.

Let us know how you go on. I wanted a beddy whippet for years, then decided on pure whippet, then came across whippet/grey and thought the extra size would come in handy. Then I got offered a sal/whip/grey pup which I couldn't resist. He is my first lurcher and 5 months old. Hoping he makes a good all rounder. Gaz

Its refreshing to see someone thinking about what dog they want. And whilst, correctly, alot of people say worker-worker is the way to go, I don't think it is unreasonable to want a particular breeding or "look". If you do go down the pure whippet line then go for genuine workers, there are some crackers out there. Good luck, Gaz.

Lurcher and Terrier Dilemma
Gaz_1989 replied to Gaz_1989's topic in Working Dog Health & Training Talk
Thanks for reply. Both dogs in the house i a no no. The only reason the lurcher is no outside is because I have been unable to house train him. Granted this could be my fault entirely. But doesn't change the fact that he pees everywhere and will pee in the house even if back door is open. I have decided to try and add onto the lurcher run so I can kennel the terrier outside aswell. I will bring her inside when she is in season so as to not drive my lurcher mad. Gaz -
Its gonna be down to your preference then mate. Most lurchers will enjoy a bit of mooching and do you proud. Personally I just don't like beddys. Don't like collie cross either. But thats just me. A beddy whip would be sound for what you want. So would a pure whippet. I love a nice workin whippet. I've got a sal/whip/grey. He is such a character and a great loyal dog. Stubborn as feck. But great all the same and very intelligent. Everyone will make different suggestions mate. Gaz

What does it consist of mate? You cant go wrong with raw. Dogs love it and look great. I'm trying to get my parents to give it there dogs. One of them has got dry, flakey skin. Another drinks about 3 litres a day and pisses like a horse. And the terrier chokes on biscuits. But they don't believe that a good raw diet would sort all this out.

You must be chuffed mate. Nice one for sticking with the deaf pup :-) Gaz

Are you after lamping rabbits? Ferreting? Mooching? Gaz

I just wanted to tell people about my experience moving my 5 month old sal/whip/grey outside after living in the house. I got his kennel last Monday from here... http://www.thepetpads.co.uk/shop/dog-kennels/the-porchester--%7C8194/. I put it up on Wednesday and started putting him in the garden all day (8-6) but he refused to go in kennel. He would go in for his food but then come out soon as finished. He has made a right mess of the garden, the lawn is non existent and there are 2 foot holes dotted around. So I am in the process of making a run to keep him at the top of the garde

50% offal would be too much in my opinion. 30% you may get away with. 30% offal, 30% fatty meat, 30% meaty bone, 10% fruit/veg/carb etc. Depending what you feed. My dog gets a bag of mixed meat fat and offal about 3 times a week. And I throw him a lambs heart on a Saturday when I've been butchers. The rest of the time he gets chicken wings, lamb racks or tripe. And once a week the missus does a stew of some sort which he gets a bowl of with biscuits. And once a week he gets a tin of tuna in sunflower oil with a couple of eggs and a handful of biscuits. Gaz

Thanks mate. PM Sent.

If your happy with beddy x then put him to beddy/grey. Are there any qualities you want to add to breeding? Apart from size? Gaz

What part of the country you in? Someone may make an offer. I was told to find a gundog club and offer to do free beating or cleaning out etc at weekends. May open up new doors so to speak. Atb. Gaz

Chunky pups, look really well. How are parents bred? 1/2 cross? 3/8?
-
Skinner - Have you got any pics of lakey x russel mate? Rock - Thanks for reply. I didn't really want a pup from parents that are earth dogs as I don't want dog going to ground. Obviously I know any terrier might go to ground but I think if parents haven't then less chance possibly. Cheers Gaz

Its not easy mate. People have to be very careful who they trust. I spent from the age of 15 to 21 asking for permission or lads to start me off on the right foot. Nothing. I just pottered around with air rifle but really wanted to get into Lurchers. Then after about 3 years on here, I came across a bloke local to me. I sent him a PM asking if he would mind me tagging along with him one night. He took a big gamble letting me go with him, I could of been anti or anything, anyway I've now got a 5 month old pup which he bred and go out with him lamping and mooching regular. Good l

Well trained, live to hand, day and night, and good ferret dog. Not being funny but I reckon your gonna struggle mate. Who is likely to be selling such a dog?
-
Thanks cleanspade. I have been talking to bigboy19706 who has got a russel bitch which has been mated by a russel/lakey dog. Both parents bushing, rabbiting and ratting which is what I want my pup to do so seems a good call. Just awaiting pics of parents and the missus to agree :-) Gaz

lurcher and terrier together in same kennel
Gaz_1989 replied to mrmen16's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
I have had a lengthy discussion with skycat tonight about this over the phone. And very helpful she is too. I have decided to firstly get the lurcher outside and settled. Then in a few months look to separating a section of the run for terrier bitch. I think a bitch is more likely to have a better bond with my lurcher than a dog. When the bitch comes into season I will bring her indoors in a crate away from the dog. If it is unbearable for either her hating it inside or us with lurcher crying etc then I will get her spayed a few months after first season. If she is okay indoors -
lurcher and terrier together in same kennel
Gaz_1989 replied to mrmen16's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Sorry for hijacking thread. -
I first gave my pup chicken wings at about 9 weeks. He swallowed them whole. Threw them up whole. Swallowed them whole and then repeated a few times. He soon realised they need chomping a few times. Breast of lamb is bang on for pups. Very little risk of choking as they have to nibble bits off.

lurcher and terrier together in same kennel
Gaz_1989 replied to mrmen16's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
I haven't got space for another run mate. Lurcher has got the run of the yard. My lurcher is no house dog. I've tried for 5 month to house train, crate train etc. He pisses everywhere. The door can be open and he will piss inside. He also prefers being out, he hates being hot and runs around panting in the house. Gaz -
lurcher and terrier together in same kennel
Gaz_1989 replied to mrmen16's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
What do you all reckon to keeping some dogs out and some dogs in house? Does it cause jealousy issues? Ive got a lurcher dog who I am in process of moving outside in a kennel and we are thinking about getting a terrier bitch to live inside, since finding out that it isnt advised to kennel together. Could it work out? Gaz
