  1. I have a four month black lab for our future gun dog, who's a diamond. He sit's, walks to heel, will stay when told, come to heel, and is a family pet too. We were out walking with him yesterday and he appeared carrying a little finch of some sort that we think got attacked by a group of magpies. He bought it right to us..... need I say more They have a very natural instinct, and are very bright. Teaching Stanley is a joy, and I'm just finding it hard not to show him too much, as he's learning things at a rate of knots! I got this little chap from a farm in Penzance, the father had some work
  2. Cheers Geoff. those came in like a flash, then all of a sudden just left..had to be quick..I was waiting for a woodpecker to come when they arrived.. Stunning amazing pic! what a photographer I've just bought an olympus E300, and am saving now for a decent zoom lens before I can get anything close to that! I missed FOUR woodpeckers (Spotted) at a time on my feeders last year, and was totally gutted but ony had a really pants little digi camera anyway. Cant wait to get snapping!
  3. Wonder what one crossed with a cayuga would look like Moll. Excellenty Dont you just love pals like that
  4. Moll. Just the little brown duck now. Hi Moll, only just picked up your PM ... I was going to say they were a buff of some sort too, didn't know they were Plymuff one's though Not sure about the brown duck, its hard to tell .......
  5. Well I have a hunch that they don't go for eggs that much during winter, but lets get down to brass tacks. Are they coming to have a look but not going in ? or just not paying attention. If its the latter then get a slice of clean bright white bread, cut it into 1cm squares and scatter that around the trap on the floor. I find that helps to get them interested. Add a broken egg to the nest; one broken, one whole. ..... and move the location of the trap? - I've found under a tree to be good in the past....... Also, the trap looks very "new" try using a bit of natural camo
  6. i'm no expert on pig breeds so maybe someone here will know.... what are the ones that are black(the ones i've always seen are black) and have HUGE ears? sorta like the ones yours had, only seems they were much larger on the piglets. ... Could well be the Large Black: http://www.pigparadise.com/lblack.html
  7. Hi moxy - here's another link to a previous magpie discussion too: http://www.thehuntinglife.com/forums/index...st&p=394033 Also I bought these: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...em=230201066405 They bring them in quite well, but I've heard mixed results. Good luck
  8. This isn't what I've eaten but I remember my Nan telling me this story... Back in those days when she was a kid, sweets and the such were a very rare treat. She was walking on the farm, and to her delight spotted a humbug on the floor... She eagerly picked it up and popped it in her mouth thinking no one else was going to get a look in on that one..... when to her horror, she realised it was some semi dry goose shit lol, aparently it was black and white just like those big old mints.... bet it didn't taste as good though.....
  9. Thankyou Lloyd! I get it now I haven't got any of that gear to hand right away, but I'm sure my brother has got something very similar he'd lend me.... Just for tomorrow I might have a go at setting a snare I'll let ya know how I get on, Thanks again,

  12. lol @your hubby! Here's a couple of pics I've scanned for you of my old pig Joyce. She was a large white X landrace. As you can see she was a very friendly pig This was my 2 1/2 year old daughter (at the time) riding her. The sow never produced a litter under 11, and I can only remember her loosing 1 or 2 to being layed on.
  13. LOL oh my god Blue!!.... so is this one for eat's? It'd be like eating your pet dog if you get it that well trained lol
  14. I've got two problem squirrels at the moment. The sods have eaten fist size holes in my feed bins that hold my chicken layers pellets, and mixed corn. They are plastic lids, and they go through 'em in a matter of an hour. I've even tried feeding the little sods ontop of the bins - but does that stop them chewing Where can you get these traps? Are they the best sort? ... or anyone wanna come sit in the garden with a gun???? I love the kids seeing the squirrels, but these particular ones HAVE to go!

  17. Magpies are always on the look out for new territory, so when you shoot one couple, another set will move in. Just keep up the trapping and shooting.
  18. Hiya - I Had big problems with magpies and carion crow stealing my hens eggs. They actually flew right into the hen house, and were taking them from the nest boxes, to the tune of a dozen a day!! I borrowed a very old larsen, but didn't have a call bird. I moved my hens, and shut up the door to the hen house, so stopping thier free feast. I put the larsen outside the hen house a couple of days later, with a lovely looking nest of egg's in the call bird side..... Result??? .....Two carrion crow the same day!!, One stayed for the call bird and the other that had scraped itself up a bit got d
  19. Nice one wazz Personally, I keep my layers as layers, and rear the meat ones for meat. I have always found that the x breds are very hardy and great egg layers. I have light sussex x rhode islands - rock x - and a few french marran. Depending on how you want to go about the meat side of things, I'd get yourself a bantam hen. They go broody a few times a year and sit tight as. My little banty hatched out two clutches last year, and I seperated the cock birds out for the meat rearing. They free ranged for about 4 months, then I bought them in to a big stable for about 6 weeks, to finish o

  21. sorry mate not slating kids [bANNED TEXT] i meant was it is hard for them to buy kit so need we charge them, not charge the hell out of them. i meant only charge over the age of 16 for example didn't mean you were slating them, sorry if it seemed that way - there were a few on the pay to join thread that were. All seems a bit silly and blown WAAAAAAAY out of proportion.
