  1. My rabbiting lurcher always stands with his front paw up when marking an occupied bury....i just wondered what traits other peoples dogs had when marking. He does the same when marking game birds hiding in cover.....like a pointer almost. Rolfe.
  2. Was out for a few hours over the weekend on what was a Busmans Holiday for me, to take my young nephew out for a bit of ferreting. We had a few rabbits and a bit of a short dig.........but what was noticable that each rabbit caught was carrying 5 well developed young. The rabbits seem to be breeding all year round now and i find i am starting to ferret later in the year and finishing earlier. Had i gone out a week later than i did..........i would have been laid up with a nest of youngsters. Just wondered what others are experiencing ferreting this time of the year? Rolfe.
  3. Yes..........i take your point Dotty about the people who don't post.........and i agree with you, but i think you will always get people who don't post and nose around the site..........so i just let em look if they want. Rolfey.

  10. In truth snares can be set anywhere from 4 to 6.5 inches high and they will still catch rabbits, depending on location and ground cover conditions. As a general rule setting towards the higher end will produce most catches. It all comes down to experience at the end of the day. As with all trapping, you must experiment until you find the setting height that works for you. Rolfe. Whilst I agree in part with what you say Rolfe, at 4"you are going to get in the main more misses than hits, and those catches are by default rather than design, and often resulting in bad placement of the c

  12. As far as i am aware OTC...mole traps are classed the same as small ground vermin traps. The pest act 1954 section 8 does not apply, as these are made an exception in the Small Ground Vermin Trap Order 1958.....unless some one knows otherwise. Rolfe.
  13. Lovely collection OTC.....i have been after a genuine mole spade for a few years now.........and only recently just missed a beauty, some bugger beat me to it. I have a few trap dealers keeping their eyes peeled for one........and hopefully they will come up with the goods. Regards Rolfe.
  14. Proper poetry, none of that shakespeare rubbish. Bill is that Burns...........or Stanley Unwin Have a good one mate....! Rolfe.
  15. Very interesting Ditch as always mate.......! I have a very old "Spud Thistle" that has been cut down that i use as a mole spade.....it is Spear & Jackson made and it is a very useful bit of kit when used for setting Fenns when rabbit or mink trapping. See Pictures. Rolfe.
  16. Well i still use my trapping hammer on an almost daily basis Ditch. You don't see many about these days. Last one i saw for sale was at the Midland last year........they wanted £40 for it.......well worth it if you had a use for it. Rolfe.
  17. Phostoxin and Talunex both contain aluminium phosphide which liberates highly toxic phosphine gas when moisture activated. At least 48 hours is needed for the gas to disperse, but i would leave it considerably longer than that before attempting to ferret any treated buries. I personally would not consider entering ferrets for at least two weeks after a treatment. hope this has been of some help. Rolfe.

    BODMIN MOOR

Well them buggers are normal compared to some i've met down there.... Rolfey.
  19. I have a feeling that the US moles are slightly larger than our own There are actually about half a dozen variations of the Nash mole trap, the early ones have cast iron bases on them, some were painted green. It has been around for a fair while so must work, or it would have disappeared into obscurity by now. OTC Yeah the chap i borrowed it off.........has had great results using it.........in fact he swears its the best trap on the market. it would be too bulky for my liking tho.....but thanks for the info OTC. Rolfe.
  20. They work the same in principle as the Talpex Ditch.......IE....triggered by upward pressure to the dog/ tongue Rolfe
  21. Well that captured your attention. Just came across this USA made very large mole trap.....made by Nash Inc. USA. It is a brute of a thing and just wondered if anyone had seen its like before? I would imagine, but it is only a guess, that it was designed for gophers. Any further information on the trap would be most welcome. Rolfey.
  22. Well Moley, Until the pest control suppliers stop selling insecticides/ pesticides to untrained personeel i can only see the problem becoming a lot worse. Everyone and his mother seems to be jumping on the pest control band waggon thinking its an easy way to make a living.........yeah right. Rolfey.
  23. If you can find some coppiced hazel that is the best for long net pegs..........by coppiced i mean hazel that has been cut back to ground level. This then produces the long straight hazel sticks prized by long netters, snarers and stick makers. Just look for a clump of long straight sticks in any mature woodland and you can be virtually certain this is hazel. Rolfe.
  24. Matt Your concern is very valid - but I think the answer is 'yes' we should be having this discussion. Many people not professionally connected with pest control do not become aware of changes in the law as much as perhaps the legislators imagine. That's where professional pesters like yourself add a lot of value. The opening question is a good one; 'Is it legal ?' The answer is still 'yes' but in much more controlled circumstances than used to be the case. That has been made very clear early on by rank and file members of the forum. Good news in my view that people are aware
