  1. Have a look at the modern home made version..........gas pipe does come in useful sometimes. This one was made by a good friend of mine and catches just as well as the more modern systems. Rolfe.
  2. well it will be a good day if the weather stays fine Lloydy Rolfe.
  3. Just finishing up a couple of outstanding rabbit contracts before too many young get about. We had 200 yrds of long net out to surround some difficult and large buries. We ended the day with 21 clean rabbits and no lay-ups or digging which i was very pleased about. We are back again tomorrow to finish the contract and hopefully the ferreting gods will be kind to us once again. Rolfe.
  4. Saw the first wasp of the year last week.........these frosts would have sorted it out by now though. Another wasp nest i have lost for later in the season. Rolfe.
  5. 9 inches Lloyd for a cone in the roof (Top Entry).........if you make a nice long cone you can fit a perch across and above the entry point. Rolfe.
  6. I'm sure your method works Ditch.......but i always prefer the broken egg-shells along with intact eggs as an attractant. I feel it conveys the message that another corvid has already visited the "Nest" and the new visitor will take his share of the spoils too... Rolfe.
  7. Aaron, Could you please let me know where in UK law it states this so I can be sure. Codes of practice issued by BASC etc are just general advisories not law. I would like to know the legality of using or not using stops on fox snares, or at least where you got this information from. OTC The Defra code of practice on the use of snares in fox and rabbit control (October 2005) Free running snares must be used, and these must have a "permanent stop" fixed approximately 9" (23cm) from the eye of the snare. This though is not a statutory code but is rather a document which la
  8. Looks like your pup will turn out something similar to mine LG..... Rolfe.
  9. Yes Tailing the net at 45 degrees stops rabbits that run along the length of the nets and you can miss a lot of rabbits if you dont do it in certain situations. Also........never use a lamp when long netting at night.........it all wants doing in total darkness, that said a small torch in the pocket is useful for untangling and removing twigs from the nets after a successful drop. Rolfe.
  10. Yes i agree with all thats been said, and blood certainly speeds up the rotting process. It is ESSENTIAL that the nets are allowed to dry naturally though, i hang all mine up in an outside porch to dry after use. The quickest way to lose nets to rotting is to leave them in a damp or wet condition in the net bag. Rolfe.
  11. Did you count the spots bill...........were they greater or lesser? Rolfe.
  12. you can set snares anywhere there are runs , i snare them running up the vertical faces of dry stone walls at times its quite easy onece you gain experience . Perfect Snaring location..........if rabbits use the runs..........they can be snared........just experiment a little with different settings. Rolfe.
  13. Well if you can call crawling under hedges, being attacked by a crazy horse, and being pricked, stung and stabbed fun.............then yes i have had a wonderful day Lloydy Rolfe.
  14. Just thought i'd post a couple of pictures from today as we ferreted some really difficult blackthorn hedgerow buries. It was a nightmare all day and the fact the hedges had just been flailed made the job of untangling the nets a real pain in the backside. Still, we finished the day with 17 good clean rabbits..........and........never got laid up once or saw any young rabbits about. We also only missed one rabbit that slipped a tangled net..........again remarkable considering the terrain we were working in. Anyway..........i think i may need a blood transfusion later to replace the gallons

    soft trap

A cage trap and a snare are the only two legal methods of trapping a fox........as far as i'm aware............unless as always...........someone knows different. There is NO spring trap that is approved for fox control in the UK. Rolfe.
  16. Only one year to go and then a telegram from the queen. Rolfe.
  17. I could never turn gay............i couldn't stand blokes rejecting me as well Rolfe.
  18. Happy birthday Tess.............have a good one. Rolfe xx
  19. set your fox snares higher ten inches minimum to bottom of loop in open ground and 12 inches in higher grass , weeds, etc. to many people set their fox snares and rabbit snares far to low , Entirely agree with GW too many people set wires far to low........I set all mine 11-12 inches to the bottom of the loop and have not caught a non-target species for years. Rolfe.
  20. As long as you can see the rabbit runs you can set a wire anywhere.......but always set ON the beats and not between them, yes you can catch rabbits between the beats.........but this is not the correct place to set a wire for consistant catches. Obviously on grassland the rabbit runs are far more distinct than on plough or drilled fields. Rolfe.
  21. No its an electric toothbrush Ummmmmmmmmm. very close.. Rolfey.
  22. Well i thought it was a dick. Rolfe.
  23. Nice looking dog by the way Lloyd..........got saluki in there somewhere? Rolfe.
  24. Nice one Lloydy..........they soon learn to retrieve mate.........but only train it on it's own ........NOT with other dogs around................... they can be buggers to teach if another dog is present. Rolfe.
