  1. Do you use a quad Matt? Couldn't manage the acreage I do without the bike. Really nice today to get up some speed and cool down. To be honest Moxy, I am. My fingers are aching, my knees are aching, and I've started to make funny noises when I get up. Looking on the bright side, I've still got two farms that I haven't touched yet this year, and 2 farms to do follow up visits, so it isn't looking too bad and as long as we don't have a drought, I reckon I'll be pretty much flat out until the end of June this year. What happens then is up to our stripey
  2. I wish the weather would make it's mind up. Summer is back here today. Did the trap round wearing a T shirt. I tend to find the moles harder to catch when it's warm and dry, but still managed 71 today. Day of rest and cleaning tomorrow, then I'll whack another 150 traps in the ground on Monday. With what I've already got in the ground I may do OK on Tuesday, then it's back to garden jobs in Wiltshire for a week or two.
  3. Penny Wise is also now taking a holiday from THL. Members may not care about the law of this land, but the forum has rules, and those rules must be adhered to. As Bosun has said, 'debate don't slate'. Subjects like this always bring out the members who want to be abusive, and wave their cocks around. Please, please, enjoy the debate without resorting to personal abuse, or more will follow Penny and Dan.
  4. Hi Scratchy one.............. It's funny you mention it, I was only looking at them this morning. It's been a hard week here on Exmoor, feeling like January most of the time, I've managed to get 250 duffus out, and will try those traplines out ASAP. Trouble is, when your back is tight against the wall, you tend to reach for the familiar bread winner first............ I will try them, and I will give honest feedback.
  5. Thanks for that Moxy. I'd better start saving some pennies.....
  6. Funnily enough, I did a farm yesterday and called in to the farmhouse to let the farmer know about some badger activity he'd asked me to look at. I stood there, soaked to the skin, with water running off my cap and he was decent enough to offer me a cuppa. I declined, for the simple reason that I knew that the second I got the outer wet layer of clothes off I wouldn't want to move again. He was snug and toasty sat indoors doing his VAT and commented to me "who'd want to be a molecatcher on a day like this.." He was right; I saw the lot yesterday, Rain, Wind, Snow, Hail and Sleet. My
  7. Flat out with 'em down here. The sheep ground is fine because there's been a grass shortage event the fields that have been laid up are OK to trap. The dairy ground is hard going with at least a foot of grass in most places. The weather hasn't been very helpful this week; I've been dodging the showers, but yesterday was more like December than May, and I've found lots of flooded runs today. Got another 144 traps to go in tomorrow, so I'm hoping for a dry day.
  8. How is giving everyone a gentle reminder to stay on topic getting 'Power crazed'? If you want to discuss it further, start your own thread. Posts don't get deleted for no reason. This thread is about transporting a dog, not the rights and wrongs of moderation. Lots of people don't post because decent threads get hijacked and taken way off topic. As I said earlier, start another thread if you wish, but please keep this one on topic.
  9. fair enough...................but wat if the dog smashes its self up and the vet bill is a grand??? if hecant get 450 together to get the dog in the first place then itsnot looking good if any accidents happen is it??? sorry if im being a knobhead but this is why id never pass dogs on again or breed a litter..............far to much shit involved........ On topic or not at all please
  10. Keep it on topic please peeps. The last thing we need here is another bitchfest.
  11. I'm sure he released the shrew unharmed
  12. Another example is the Control of Pesticides Regulations. They are issued under the Food and Environmental Protection Act, which is another 'enabling act', along with the Health and Safety at Work Act and lots more. An enabling act just allows for regulations and statutory instruments to fine tune it.
  13. SOOooooo ..... " Spring Traps Approval Orders " ??? They are Statutory Instruments issued under the Agriculture Act. Another example is speeding. When you are prosecuted for speeding, it's under the Road Traffic Act, which doesn't actually specify speed limits. It's known as an 'Enabling Act'.
  14. The so called 'bedroom tax' doesn't require payment of anything. It just prevents people claiming benefits for rooms they don't need.
  15. Yep, and hot and cold wash basin on the left
  16. Any police officer can ask to see your licence and confirm that the firearms you have are licenced. Firearm Licencing Officers are usually civilian workers these days. I don't think they would want to see inside your gun cabinet unless it's big enough to be hiding a TV set. Tell 'em where to go, and if they want to go to the trouble of getting a warrant, let them come in, unless, that is, you have something to hide. You only need to allow entry to those people named on the warrant.
  17. They are paying that, and then some. See my earlier post; I've just nicked a job down there where the farmer was paying £16 per mole plus travel expenses, and supplying a truck for the bloke to check the traps! And that was a different mole catcher to the one featured in the article!
  18. Damn it! I've got that picture of Frank wearing nothing but a revolving bow tie in my head now..........
  19. I wondered that myself Lab. Let's assume the Journo asks, "so how many moles do you catch each day" The answer may have been something like "on a good day I may catch 50". Journo then goes and does some arithmetic, 50 x 365 days = 18250 which would still be good going.... It's the same with the 33 years nonsense. "When did you start trapping moles?" "I caught my first one aged fifteen" "So you're now 48 and you've been a mole trapper for 33 years". I still think he's laid it on thick to suit his own needs mind you.
  20. Thing is, that story is littered with falsehoods. He may have caught his first mole 33 years ago (I caught mine 35 years ago), but he sure as hell hasn't been in business that long, and has only been trapping professionally for a few years. He's been trading for less than 15 years, and for most of that time didn't trap on farms. The £16 per mole seems to be the going rate amongst some down there. I know SwanseaJack and myself charge more than most, but it's still nowhere near that figure.
  21. Funnily enough Snakey, I met a farmer last week who had been paying a guy £16 per mole plus travel expenses...... The end came when he pranged the farmers truck which he also insisted on borrowing to check his traps. He's now quite happy with me turning up and charging my normal farm rate.
  22. Ford Transit Connect. Nice racking, but thirsty van to run with very poor traction.
  23. Have a read; http://www.thisisexeter.co.uk/Mole-catcher-lands-rare-albino/story-18936004-detail/story.html#axzz2SpQut6yX Not sure about claiming to have caught 'hundreds of thousands' either......
  24. Sadly, these cretins think the internet is anonymous, and that taking photos and passing them around is a good idea...... The real shame of it is that every time there is a successful prosecution, it reflects badly on the rest of the hunting community.
  25. Whatever tunnel you choose to use, with the good ole Fenn, you need to make sure the trap has a good, low roof to make it work properly.....
