  1. A trap like the monarch is capable of catching anything up to 10 rats at a time. I have had 16 in one (not to be recommended; all covered in piss and shit), but most of the time you will catch 2 or 3 at a time. For the cost of a good multi-catch cage trap, you could easily get half a dozen Snap-E's or Victors, which when placed carefully will (in my opinion) catch more per night than a multi-catch. If there are that many rats you have to ask yourself why? What is attracting them, and more importantly, what is being done to stop the infestation? They are there for a reason, and

  3. can a mod delete my account please........ Really? No problem, glad to oblige
  4. If it's not a silly question, why would you want to live catch? There are several makes out there, the good old monarch is still a firm favourite with many, and the Samuel Lewis Whole Rat Family trap is also popular. A quick search on ebay will show lots of new and second hand ones; personally, I would rather buy a good quality second hand trap than a crappy new chinky trap. Unless you have a good reason to want to catch them alive, I would opt for some of the good quality Snap-E type traps, or you could even modify some of the pro victors as shown in the pinned topics at the top o
  5. This debate has been going on for years. I can well remember 10 years ago being told that buying Fenns was a waste of money because it was thought that the new testing regime would make them obsolete. The EU has 'bought in' to the international fur trapping standards, and we keep being told that the change is imminent, but as I say, this has been going on for over ten years. Even if the EU do want these new standards of testing imposed on us, we will have the ability to 'opt out' which given the current attitude towards all things Europe is a distinct possibility. Either way, I
  6. They are not testing the badgers shot in the upcoming trial because it's too expensive to do, and will give no more information than we already have. During the RBCT up to % of the badgers in some areas tested positive for bTB, and it averaged at around 50% in the hotspots. There is no doubt that culling will reduce TB, even the flawed RBCT managed a 16% reduction, and that was with a woefully poor cull. At the time, we were begging the ISG to let us lamp and snare and they were having none of it. Unless you reduce the population significantly, you don't get a decent drop in TB leve
  7. Agree 100%. Luke, you make some sensible points which sadly are hidden by the abusive nature of your posts.
  8. I kind of agree with you... BUT.... the rules are clear; text talk is what it is, and will NOT be tolerated. We are blessed with the finest language in the world; it's a real shame that people are so incapable of using it properly. Not everyone can spell properly or use grammar, but with spell checker and the ability to edit posts there is no excuse for some of the lazy crap you often see on here. Text talk is a bugbear of mine and others. Use it at your peril; I'm not adverse to issuing warnings and 'holidays'. You mean "averse" And that is the problem with spell

You don't have to know how to spell NOT to use text talk. Any more text talk and you'll be getting a warning and
  11. Blimey! I wouldn't want to carry your snare bag too far! Make some decent ash snare pegs. Cheap, plentiful and secure enough to hold.
  12. At least 500,000 nationally with 50,000 killed on the roads every year there is no sign of them decreasing anywhere. Personally, I think the increase in forage maize in the last thirty years has had a big effect, providing a ready source of food for them in the later autumn and allowing them to lay down fat reserves for the winter. In Devon and Cornwall badgers outnumber both foxes and deer and are causing massive problems. I can't comment on the Scottish situation, but historically they've had much lower numbers of badgers and no bTB to speak of. The proposed initial culls will r
  13. Why would we need a close season? Moles are not in decline, if anything, their numbers are increasing following a couple of wet summers. Their natural habitat is woodland and scrub, even if every mole in gardens and on farmland was trapped, there would still be thousands of moles in the millions of acres of their natural habitat. Suggestions like this are often picked up by the antis; it's bad enough that we've got the Guild campaigning to restrict the mole catching trade without this kind of idea getting any kind of credence.
  14. You've got to laugh. Yet again, the hunt sabs and misc badger apologising scumbags have managed to get me chucked into Twitter jail. Back soon though!
  15. We never advertised what we were doing. The animal rights brigade target people and you don't need a sign for them to find you. TB is a huge issue which is getting worse. 38,000 cattle killed last year, and disease spreading into other species via badger vermin. Get the numbers into perspective; what's being planned is a cull of up to 5000. Thats 10% of what is killed on the roads, and less than 2% of the national population. That's not a big enough scale as far as I'm concerned. They could take 50,000 and there would still be too many of the things running around.
  16. The farmers are paying the contractors, not DEFRA. Sadly, the days of terriers being used for badgers will never return.
  17. The proactive cull during the RBCT reduced TB by 16% and that was without getting the 70% cull they needed. This time it'll be different; different methods, activity based, and more flexible. Vaccination doesn't work on badgers that are already carrying the bacteria. Much better to vaccinate in those counties with no TB as a fire break and cull in the hotspots. The side benefit will be to other species. During the RBCT a university did a survey of one of the proactive cull areas before culling and found few, if any hedgehogs. Post culling they went back and hedgehog numbers had
  18. Nothing to worry about. They can debate it all they like; NE are now committed, and it's going ahead. Another parliamentary debate is just a waste of time.
  19. For anyone with a genuine interest and an open mind, this http://www.bovinetb.info/docs/bovine-tuberculosis-in-badgers-maff-nov-1976.pdf is well worth a read. It documents how culling in 1976 resulted in 10 years with no badgerTB. We've done it before, and we can do it again; if there is a political will to do so. The trouble is; Labour sat on their hands for too long and the problem is now out of hand.
  20. Ignorance is bliss, and Hutch must be very happy......
  21. Huch, bTB has been around for centuries. It was 'isolated' in the 1950's, and the first badger to test positive was in 71. Prior to that badgers hadn't been tested because their populations were insignificant and they weren't considered. TB is a bacteria that still kills 1.5 million people each year. Before milk was routinely pasteurised it was common for people to contract TB from drinking raw milk. The BCG vaccine was developed in 1905 and is no longer given to kids in schools because some scientists think that it will not be effective for much longer.
  22. WOW!! You must be the oldest member on here and the oldest resident in the world as it was first outlawed in 1850, even more so in 1911 and again in 1935. Funny how bTB was only first documented in this country in the 1950's so I don't know how your numbers stack up, maybe in your extremely old age you forget these dates. So badger digging was outlawed nearly 100yrs before bTB came to this island. The first badger to be found with bTB was in 1971. I'm not sure where you get your information from, but it's WRONG. bTB has been around for a very long time, and badger digging was lega
  23. The money is shite mate. By the time they pay out for accommodation, waiting time, fanny around with auditors and sort out security, the money left will be negligible. I know someone who quoted for it on a per acre basis, the farmers found a cheaper contractor. I wouldn't do it for any money. Been there, got the T shirt, eaten the ham. I thought it was alright ,.............if there travelling then it still seems reasonable even ,.....over one hundred pound for seven tb carriers fooking sounds ok to me....... Having done it; and dealt with all the bollocks and auditor

  25. Don't forget that most cattle in TB hotspots are tested every sixty days and removed even on suspicion of having TB. Most deer that are shot end up in the human food chain and are subjected to the same post mortem inspections as cattle. TB kills most species, but badgers harbour and spread the disease over a long period of time.
