  1. Yet whippets are popular, both pure and cross; * Pic taken in Australia, where it's not only legal, but encouraged. Cheers.
  2. This thread got me thinking about pures used elsewhere. In Australia the saluki is virtually unheard of as a working dog, either pure or crossed. I found this strange, as they have an abundance of hares, and land so big it makes the fens look like my back garden ! When I've asked lads I've hunted with down there, they just shrug their shoulders and say "we don't need them " ! I find this a bit strange, as they use breeds like Borzoi, Ibizan hound, Irish Wolkhound, Ridgebacks, etc in their breeding. Fair enough, the breeds I mention are different to the ones here in the U.K.
  3. Cashels Evening put up a great show at the last Waterloo Cup. Greyhound Data has her weight as 50lb, but the owner told me she ran in the Cup at 45lb, as she lost weight due to travelling from America to France and then to England..A very good little 'un ! Cheers.
  4. Seriously though, Nothernlites and Taysiders Beddy crosses worked like trojans on that four day trip; ferreting, lamping and running white hares in atrocious conditions. I have nothing but admiration for them ! Cheers.
  5. Aye, but your dog took three of them rabbits round my neck, out the reed beds, the deer cross only took one ! A good tumbling catch, so I was happy ! LOL ! Cheers.
  6. I've got pics of the Cairngorms trip I'd love to put up, but they're not "pre ban", and I've just come back on here and am enjoying it greatly, so dont want to upset anyone ! LOL ! Cheers.
  7. A couple of Beddy lurchers I've had the pleasure to be invited out to see do their work ; Thanks Beddy Dave ! ? ! Cheers.
  8. My old bitch Delta's sire was Flynn, a first cross Beddy/Grey from Heartbreak Fell Kennel. Im sure Pat won't mind me putting up a couple of pre ban pics of the dog; Flynn; Flynn and Delta; Flynn, Delta and Saddle; Delta, Beddy/Grey x Deer/Grey/Whippet. Saddle, Beddy/Grey x Saluki/Grey. Cheers.
  9. Bob was put over any bitch that the owner had the money for the stud fee ! Shame, as he and Scurlough where right up there with the greatest. I'm sure Molly had a pup out of Bob and a lurcher, but it didn't make the grade. Cheers.
  10. Either of those dogs would have been a good line for my deer x, who's dam was a Sonic Flight bitch, same sire as Westmead Hawk. I should have mated her, Tomo would have had a pup ! LOL ! Cheers.
  11. And sometimes a certain determination in their eyes ! Cheers.
  12. It looks even better in the flesh, it's around the same stamp as my half cross, not really surprising as they both have a lot of Doxhope blood. I'll see if I can borrow it this coming season and torment a hare or two on the Northumberland fells. Cheers.
  13. They aren't mine, so I can't comment on the amount of work they get, but I was offered the use of one when both my dogs were out of action, I still hope to take him up on that as I'd love to see a pure behind a hare or deer. Of course I'm not expecting them to compare with a purpose bred lurcher, but it would be fun seeing them on. Cheers.
  14. Getting back to Deerhounds, here's a few of my pals; A leash of pups; A pair of Adults; This bitch could easily be mistaken for a half cross or a lurcher because of her colouring, conformation and size, but is 100% deerhound. Cheers.
  15. I was supposed to meet him at the CLA a few year back, but I was abroad at the time and couldn't make it. He gave me a DVD when I was out there of him and Makhtoum flying their birds at Bustards in Pakistan. This was one of Makhtoums birds that Hamad had in training; Cheers.
  16. I can't comment on Hamads dogs as I've never seen them run. I can comment on him as a man; he was a friend of my late daughter, and I found him an honest, generous and a good man to talk about dogs with. He offered me one of these pups as a gift, but due to circumstances at the time, I had to decline. When I visited his Falconry Mews at Dubai racecourse, I came away loaded down with gifts, hoods, gloves, jesses, traps, and a signed copy of his book and a photo. Hamad, my daughter and myself at his hotel; Cheers.
  17. Getting back to the question; "pure breeds, where would we be without them"; well, without the base running breeds, greyhounds, whippets, Deerhounds, Salukis, etc, its simple......we wouldn't have lurchers ! Theres a school of thought that lurchers are now fast enough to not need any addition of running dog, and I can go along with that, but personally I like to see an outcross to a pure now and again, if only to add a bit of hybrid vigour. Youve now got the likes of the coursing dogs and the non-ped whippets that are almost recognisable as separate breeds from the lurcher and the wh
  18. Interesting what you say about "Middle East lurchers". Some years back I was with Hamed Ghunaim at his Arabian Saluki Centre in Abu Dhabi and two men from Oman arrived to have a bitch mated with one of his dogs. He refused to let the mating take place because they couldn't prove the lineage of their bitch. He told me that when they started racing the Salukis out there, some owners added greyhound, but this was banned and dogs were DNA tested to keep the breed pure. Cheers.
  19. I did a post one time, on another site; " Are Pures Realy That Pure". I traced the lineage of my half cross bitch back to the 1800's. Quite easy, really , Greyhound Data and the Deerhound Stud book are very accurate. Anyhow, The deerhound side of my bitch goes back to when Noble introduced the greyhound blood, and in the greyhound side there is Orfords bull, and "Scottish Greyhound" and one listed as "Rough Greyhound ". So, if you go back far enough, you find that pures ain't so pure ! Cheers.
  20. I think Anastasia had the good of the breed in mind when she got permission from the K.C. to add the greyhound blood. She was, rightly, concerned that the deerhound was becoming to "cloddy" and " Irish Wolfhound like". I think they could do with that again, or the addition of a good half cross, if one could be found. Cheers.
