I think Cummings wanted the government and the civil service to be fit for purpose and work like a well oiled machine......not to be an old boys club, the old school tie, jobs for the boys, or as in Boris's case, government by unelected girl friend ! That was never going to happen, the Establishment is far to embedded to let a lone wolf spoil their club, so he had to be got rid of ! Cheers.

Its all brinkmanship, the French would be seen as the aggressors in this case, and at least some EU/European countries would agree with us. Merkel would be aghast at the though of another war in Europe, however unlikely, and even more aghast that it was seen, by some, to have been started by an EU member. She would have no choice but to put Macron back in his box ! Cheers.

I'm not quite old enough to remember, but have heard about wars being fought over stranger things, such as the war with Spain; The War of Jenkins Ear " ? Cheers

I still think Boris should up the ante considerably, maybe issue a statement such as; "We consider the threat to interrupt the supply of electricity to the Channel Ilses and a blockade of their ports, an of aggression, and would consider the actual application of these threats an act of war, and ,accordingly, have lodged a complaint with the United Nations". See what Macrons response would be. Cheers.

Why NOT Just Nuke The Fukk Out Of China, Right Now?

Cabin fever, mate, cabin fever.......... Cheers. -
I'd think it would be a massive diplomatic mistake for France to actually turn of the power to a couple of foreign offshore small islands. The international community, apart, of course the EU, would look on aggression like this with a very jaundiced eye ! But they have threatened it , nonetheless, by a senior member of the French government ! A suitable reply would possibly be to remind the French of their very considerable investments in U.K. Power and water companies........... Cheers.

I doubt it, but I think young Bart got it right when he called the French " cheese eating surrender monkeys " ? Cheers.

That would be an act of insanity , mate ? Cheers.

Breaking news on Sky : UK has sent two Royal Navy vessels to Jersey in response to Frances threat to block St. Hellier port ! Cheers.

France has threatened to switch off electricity to the The Channel Isles and blockade their ports in retaliation for the new, post Brexit fishing rules. If Argentina pulled the same stunt with the Falklands, we would consider it an act of war, and react accordingly, so why are we not being more reactive with France ? Maybe turn "Big Lizzie" and her carrier group around and re-assign them to the English Channel ? Cheers.

Are you saying humans didn't descend from apes ? i probably agree with you, because I've allways understood humans and apes descended from a common ancestor, not a linear progression from ape to man. Cheers.

Aren't Homo sapiens and Neanderthals different branches of hominids just as chimps and bonobos are different branches of apes ? Anyhow, I still can't grasp what your point is ? Are you denying evolution ? Are you saying ALL the branches of hominids are basically Homo sapiens, differing only because of their diet and location ? Cheers.

It was a long time ago, I know George owned one of the dogs on that pedigree ? Cheers.

Would that be George Coulson ? Cheets.

I'm not sure why you keep mentioning homo erectus to support you're stance, Francie, but I was under the impression that homo erectus fossils have been found in widespread areas of Asia, Africa and Europe and have been subject to much investigation, including ct scans. No one in palaeontology doubts they existed, so, again, I can't see what your point is ? Cheers.

I am, but I'm no fan of Selby, but I think he'll win. Cheers.

"Pedigree" of a non-ped I had back in the 70's. Cheers.

Scratch dogs are dogs that race off a level start, no handicap or weight advantages. They are the heavier dogs. Usually racing in weight classes of up to 36lb, up to 45lb, and up to 55lb, and sometimes "no limit" Non-peds are simply whippets that aren't KC registered, and most have some greyhound blood in their makeup. A Saluki/whippet/grey wouldn't be classed as a non-ped whippet, but an old rule at my local clubs states " dogs must be smooth coated and of whippet like appearance ", so, if it looks like a whippet, it could have anything in its makeup and it would be up to the

Who would have imagined ; a philosophical , theological debate on THL without rancour and abuse ? Cheers.

Who knows, mate, but every religion has "borrowed" from previous religions. Maybe there is a god, or gods, I don't know........ Cheers.

The bible is also, I think, known as "The Truth"; I'm only repeating what I've read. Cheers.

As most of us know, the bible is not one book; it's made up of many books, and a lot of books that didn't quite fit the narrative were excluded. But let's stick with the two main books; the Jewish Old Testament and the Christian New Testament. Two completely different versions of god : the vengeful, angry , murderous god of the Old Testament, who inflicted the most grevious tortures on a devout believer, Job, just to win a bet with the devil, who destroyed cities, populations and mankind except for Noah and his family, who turned one of his believers Lot's, wife, into a pillar of sal

I'm loathe to get into a theological debate, but if people fervently believe the bible is the word of god, how do they explain the "end of days", "the Rapture" ? According to the Christian bible, no one goes to heaven until the "second coming of Christ" . Then it becomes unclear, are the living believers raised up first, or the dead believers ? Are the "chosen believers" limited to 144,000 ? What happens to the rest ? Philosophers and theologians have debated and argued over this for hundreds of years. If the bible is really the word of god, why is it so ambiguous ? Cheers.

Any thoughts on the Ishtar Gate in Babylon ? Around 3,000 years old it depicts a series of animals, some still with us, such as lions; some now extinct, such as aurochs; and, weirdly, some that can only be described as dragons or dinosaurs ! How did ancient Mesopotamia know about dinosaurs ? Cheers.

Isn't "carbon dating" used more as a generic term these days for all element type dating ? Other elements such as uranium-thorite are supposed to be more accurate and have longer half-life's. Studies of cave paintings date some of them as far back as 60,000 years. Interesting subject. Cheers.
