  1. I've heard the "Saluki" theory also. But also heard the supposedly original breeder had mated his dog, which was called "Arab" with a bull type. "Arab" wasn't Saluki, but the name, as you say, added to the confusion. Ask ten different Ozzie dog lads their opinion and you'll likely get ten different answers. I tend to shy away from the saluki theory, as how many Salukis were available back then, compared to greyhounds ? Ive also wondered why Salukis aren't more popular down their, given the amount of hares and the size of the land ? Cheers.
  2. It's not just the colour....camo breaks up the outline. But my reason is it's cheap as chips and hardwearing , from surplus stores ?? Cheers.
  3. It's a bit hot around the airport, but from Ponteland up to Scots Gap is ok, and plenty hares. Last time I was clay shooting was across the river at Slayley Quarry , I can hear them every Sunday morning, and if the winds coming from the west, I can hear the Brae's O' Derwent hounds at Whittingstall. Used to train the Terrier pups in the false setts at Bolam lake many years ago. Cheers.
  4. I'm not in NZ mate, I've spent a fair bit of time there and have family there. I actually live about ten minutes drive from Ponteland. I thought one of the ranges was decommissioned and the other is pretty restricted by the MOD, although I think the rifle club still use it. Last time I shot on there would be late 60's, early 70's, but I still run a few hares around there ? Cheers.
  5. I remember the odd sheep being taken out with a Bren on the old ranges at Ponteland ! ?? Cheers.
  6. All that video needs is the "Ride Of The Valkerie's " soundtrack ! ?? Cheers.
  7. Gravity roller conveyor systems 100's of designs ASCONVEYORSYSTEMS.CO.UK Gravity roller conveyor systems suppliers and manufacturers. Versions in stainless - steel & PVC. Roller tables in heavy & light designs - 100's of rollers & frame... Cheers.
  8. When welding cracked cast casings we would preheat in an oven, weld using cast iron rods, then back in the oven and allow to cool down gradually to avoid cracking. This was many years ago, though. Methods and equipment have probably improved considerably ? Cheers.
  9. I still know a lad from the 60's who had a whippet that wouldn't chase, so he put a couple of guinea pigs in an onion bag, and attached it to the rag for the bitch to run. It worked, the bitch became top class , but he was barred from the track ! ?? Cheers.
  10. I'm talking over 50 years ago, we were young and inexperienced, we fell for the talk of the old hands.....you live and learn.... I can only talk of genuine experiences.....such is life ? Cheers.
  11. I've told this tale on here before; Many years ago, a pal of mine had a racing Greyhound that wasn't doing the business, so some of the "old hands " told him to run it on a hare to "gee it up". we slipped it on a hare, they went through a barbed wire fence......the greyhounds back opened up like a sleeping bag zip, it broke its tail and broke a hock.....it didn't leave the field. Cheers.
  12. A couple of matches with non-ped whippets. ? Cheers.
  13. Couple of matches I had with a Greyhound almost exactly fifty years ago; Yeah, they can run over 20 seconds ! ?? Cheers.
  14. It's very easy to over tax any dog, especially if there's plenty of gear to run. These days I give three runs if there's a " gruellrer" amongst them. If they are easy or very short runs, maybe one or two more, that does it for me and the dog. Also, I like to be on and off before it comes on top ! Lamping is different......a few seasons ago I had five hares off one field with Lima, the old deer cross, and called it a night, it was just slaughter, not sport. Maybe im getting old ? ?? Cheers.
  15. Cashells Evening; This little bitch was brought over from America and did well at the last Waterloo Cup. Only around 24" and 40 odd pound. Cheers.
  16. My Doberman caught more rabbits than my collie cross ! ?? Cheers.
  17. It was a half cross and it just didn't have the speed to catch a rabbit, let alone a hare. As i said, maybe I'm being unfair on collie crosses as it was the only one I've had. I've seen some decent ones, but I wouldn't have another. Cheers.
  18. Undoubtedly, in my mind. But it's not just the stamina, there's the improvement in coat, feet, bone and "nose", over a pure Greyhound, and I've been lucky, I think, that in the last two I've had haven't lost much in speed from the pure Greyhound. Please don't get me wrong, I've never touted the deer cross above other types, I've owned pure Saluki's, Saluki crosses, collie types, Beddy types, non-ped whippets, and I like them all apart from the collie cross, perhaps unfairly as I've only had one and it was the most useless dog I've ever had. These are only my views, others may d
  19. Yeah, "there's more hares killed in the beer tent than have ever been killed in the field" ! ?? Cheers.
  20. I have good days, and blank days, like anyone who is honest about their dogs, no dog takes everything it's slipped on. I enjoy all days out , but it is nice if you get something for the freezer ! ??! Cheers.
  21. Mongeralised American Bulldog ? Cheers.
  22. Had an "ooh, are, nearly had it" run yesterday with the young deer cross bitch . Not many about, and what we did see were sitting close by the hedges or cover, and on their toes in an instant ! First was what looked like one of your 500 yard slips, but in reality was probably "only" about 200. It was sitting close to a hedge and I only slipped to loosen the bitch up, it was gone before she got near it. Second one was again a longish slip on one sitting near cover. This one she managed to put a bend in before losing it. Third run was much better, about a 75-100 yard slip, s
  23. I've seen him interviewed a few times, and he's another who can't give a coherent answer. He answers every question with an ideological or political diatribe. He had absolutely no answer as to why he owned a diesel car and diesel truck. Cheers.
  24. Wilf, lets park to one side wether we think their cause is justified or not. A lot of people think it is, but the way they are going about their protests is alienating the vast majority of people. I saw that imbecile woman who poured shit over Sir Toms monument and she simply couldn't give a coherent answer as to why she chose that target. If she'd of poured it over an MP's door or car she would have done her cause far more good. Yes, they are getting noticed, as they want, but they would get far more prominence if they targeted the people who could make a difference, ins
  25. I'd have some respect for them if they spent some of their money and went out to Sharm El Sheik and protested the COP 27 ! But then again, the Egyptian police wouldn't be offering them cups of tea and asking if they were comfortable......... Cheers.
