    horsfields

I used to work as a reptile specialist for a chain of petshops, but didn't know anything about tortoises, so did ALOT of research into their care, there is a lot of conflicting information out there, but this is the conclusion that i came to. horsfields don't need to be hibernated, but by hibernating them, their life span is probably increased, and they grow at a natural rate. If you do hibernate them, it should only be done if they are in perfect health. I know there is a ratio chart, i think called the jackosons ratio, which you can check the size of a hermans and compare it to it's wei
  2. cheers pal nice one, getting it right would be great.
  3. If your looking for the countryman's in carmarthen, i think the spar shops have it, tanerdy garage, and the newsagents on king st.
  4. For a fiver obviously i wasn't that bothered that it wasn't mint, spent about £ quid on parts and the blueing kit, over the last few years, so i could have probably bought a tidysecondhand break barrel rifle for about that price. It's on long term loan at one of my permissions, so they can shoot rats, ferals, squirrels on the yard and in the barns. Had the bsa a couple of years now, and have been happy with it to be honest. Reason i was asking is that my fishing buddy bought a hw35 for cheap, theres a problem with the trigger, you squeeze it and theres a delay before it fires, and i was w
  5. Right a few years ago, when I came home from living in the city, i decided to renew my interests in shooting, rabbiting fishing e.t.c. On a pretty tight budget, I bought a webley vulcan for £5! off a work mate, and set about reconditioning it. The results were if i'm honest pretty poor, home blueing was terrible despite a lot of prep of the metalwork before application, and didn't seem powerful enough. Any way ended up buying a lightning which i am very happy with, and put the vulcan into a gunsmiths to see if they could do anything about the apparent lack of power. After pretty poor serv
  6. The majority of the veg i use, is spring greens, mixed with what evers cheap, i buy a load, stick it through the blender, and freeze it in batches, but i only add veg once a week or fortnight, so it lasts ages. I then mix this with tripe, or minced lamb/chicken. The majority of their diet consists of chicken carcass, chicken wings, rabbit, tripe and lamb mince, they cope with the bones fine, no problem. They also get cottage cheese, yoghurt, sardines, eggs, and offal (when there's some leftover in the fridge!). Sometimes add keepers mix, safflour oil, olive oil, cider vinegar, (probably onc

    a woodland walk

Won't walk my dogs in the local public woodland, mainly because of the smashed glass everywhere, and i mean EVERYWHERE! . Just don't think it's worth the risk. Used to go camping there when I was a teen, but never left rubbish, and certainly didn't smash bottles all over the place.

    F**king vets

might be teaching you to suck eggs, but if your looking for some mealworms to feed it, try silent world aquarium, or failing that there is a shop in narbeth, i think called webs and scales which should stock them.
  9. Alright mate, i'm in carmarthenshire, and i've got a lightforce striker, and a deben tracer atom if you want to have a look at them send me a pm. I've only had the striker a month or so, but i'm very impressed with it so far.
  10. Welcome, plenty of help on here on how to get pups started!
  11. My pup sky is nearly a year old now, and i have taken her to training classes from a young age, as I don't know anyone with lurchers to show me how to train her, and I think if you need to go to get basic obedience then go! I admit that didn't know much about training dogs, and that's why i went, and found a trainer who is excellent, recommended by a friend who keeps guarding breeds. However prior to this there were training classes nearer to where i live, and i went a couple of times, and they were crap. Sky was about 3 months old, and he couldn't show me how to train her to do a thing, lik
  12. I know it's scary! its almost as if we are conditioned that bones are bads for dogs, mad isn't it! My lurcher pup is now nearly a year old, and she's had wings and carcass all that time, and my old dog who is 15 has taken to it well, after being on dry food all his life. The only problem he has ever had health wise was his teeth, and after a year on barf, they look great, even the vet comented on how good his teeth look for a dog of his age! Perhaps don't use the hammer, cause may splinter the bones, rather than letting the pup grind them up?
  13. A mate of mine recently got into caravaning, and asked a couple of us to go to a site with him for a weekend. Now I can tolerate a bit of camping in the summer, if it's a bike rally with much much ale, loud fast dirty bikes and pretty dancing ladies, however a weekend trapped in a box, pooing in a bucket a couple of feet from where you sleep and eat, with screaming kids running everywhere, and been given the 'tour' of other caravans doesn't appeal to me. When i asked what the appeal was, i was told i wouldn't understand cause i haven't got kids, 'there's a club house and a pool!' Obviously
  14. to me these look good value for money, they are treated, and the hinges look pricer than the ferret box companies, which would explain the slightly higher price.
  15. Not an expert at dog training at all, but my first lurcher is now coming up to a year old, and her recall is pretty good, far better than other dogs i've had, and i think the best piece of advice i've been given is not to chase the pup, but if she starts messing about, just turn and walk in the opposite direction. Apart from a couple of hairy moments early on, when i thought she would run to the next county, the advice has worked well. The other piece of advice was never to scold a puppy when it comes back, even if it was doing something naughty, always be lavish with praise.

    Snakes

Used to work as the exotics specialist for a chain of petshops in south wales, mainly been into lizards, but have kept rough scaled greens, and royals. Corns are 'the' starter snake, and never had a problem with one that was sold, good feeders once started, and easy to keep. Having said that i wouldn't beput off from having most of the rat, king or milk snakes as a first snake if any of them particularly take your fancy, they can be a little trickier, but not much. If you want info on good shops in south wales give me a pm and try and make sure you don't get ripped off!
  17. not quite, i flunked out in my last year! A combination of partial dominance and dilution genes. I'm pretty convinced that albinism in ferrets isn't as simple as the monohybrid crosses you describe, mainly down to how common it is. Far more so than in most animals. I suspect that colour in ferrets is down to several genes. Interesting, my knowledge of genetics is pretty limited, never really enjoyed it, i assumed that the high percentage of albinos in ferrets was down to selective breeding early on in their domestication, would your theory apply to things like rabbits and r
  18. Albanism is a recessive gene, being coloured is the dominant gene. So call the gene for Colour C, and the gene for albanism a. A ferret with the genes: CC will be coloured (polecat) aa will be albino Ca will be coloured (polecat) because the C gene is dominant but will carry the recessive gene for albanism a. So if both parents had the genes Ca (polecat in appearance, but carring the gene for albanism), in theory the young should be: Quarter CC Half Ca Quarter aa I think that's how it works, Google 'punnett square' might explain it better with pictures. Don't ask me how
  19. Well done, think more people should respond to anti letters in their local rags! I had a letter printed in the carmarthen journal last october, in response to an anti hunting letter. While your letter is very well constructed, I fear that like my letter, it might be heavily edited to fit on the letters page! Might be worth editing it down yourself, to make sure that your main points are printed, and not edited by someone who might miss the point! once again well done and good luck!
  20. As said before wild and dangerous animals are designated by the government, under the Dangerous and Wild Animals Act. Got the list of species on the defra website, here's the link (can't see ferrets on it!!!): http://www.defra.gov.uk/wildlife-countrysi...dwaa/review.htm Click on the schedule of species for the list, hope this helps.
  21. Come down swansea greyhound track, racing starts at 7, me and a few butties are going down this evening!
  22. I'm in carmarthenshire. got a couple of jokes to throw in' a man in an english rugby top bought a donkey and proudly rode it round the pub carpark....... 'Nice donkey mate', shouted one of the drinkers, 'what sex is it?' 'female!'said the man..... 'How can you tell?' asked the drinker..... 'well' said the man 'on the way here tonight at least 20 people have shouted look at the smelly c*nt on that donkey!' GOVERNMENT INITIATIVE LAUNCHED. So women aren't mislead any further, men with a 3" or less cock have to display a white flag with a red cross on their car! When god was makin
  23. Is this not just an advertising ploy, question from new member, followed by an answer with the link to a company from another, there was something like this a few weeks ago on here i think?
