  1. They look really well mate, hope it all goes well for you, they have just started at my mates place in the last couple of days
  2. I would always take sausagedog’s advice over mine, he is vastly more experienced than me ( older ?), what I will say is if I was shooting expanding I would always take a body shot if I could, with small fast calibres especially the hmr shooting ballistic I always try to take a head shot, as always shot placement is key, I wouldn’t take a head shot face on with the hmr, on the centre fire topic, I fully agree with sausage that there’s no overkill with fox, I’d use 50 cal if they would let me, I have mates that use .308 and 30-06 both these can be expensive to feed if you don’t home load,
  3. Nobody wants to hurt anything, the more you know the more you will make the correct decision, you must have complete respect for what you shoot, foxes are an amazing animal, unbelievably intelligent this is show by how many there is and how they constantly out smart me ?
  4. I’ve shot a fair few foxes with the .17 and my advice would be keep it under 100 yards and head shoot them with ballistic tip, ( I’ve never had one run when head shot ) if they are square on I would take a bib shot, I’ve shot them side on but there’s a big margin for error and with it been such a small round there’s always a chance it will be running dead, this is only my opinion and as the wife tells me my opinion means nothing ?
  5. I’ll put my name in the hat for that one Dave, I keep looking at that but I’m just to northern to put my hand in my pocket ?
  6. Very nice, we could start a hunting life book club could you put my name in for the foxing book please, I haven’t seen that one before ?
  7. Nice one for doing that, I’m glad you enjoyed it ?
  8. You are welcome mate I’m glad he enjoyed it, with some of them birds you hit we will be charging you more to shoot from now on, the couple you dropped on that first drive were screamers ??
  9. The place is unbelievable and lifting with rabbits, my mates a member so we will find out what sort of mate he is when it comes to getting me some rabbit shooting
  10. Not my shoot but I was asked to go beating on a posh boys syndicate in Richmond North Yorkshire today, this is the first time I’ve been here although I know a few of the members, as I’ve said before I’m not a massive fan of expensive game shooting but this place is something else, it’s basically one hillside split into 5 big drives and everything is driven towards the river, there’s one drive that’s callEd Boy George’s ( I don’t know why ) and it’s basically a cliff face, there’s a rope to get down to a ledge and you push it across driving the birds out towards the river valley at a hight whe
  11. We where talking about this where I was beating today, it’s what I would call a mid level shoot, it’s still a syndicate but out of the reach of the average working man, the owner of the shoot sees the way forward as simulated game, low cost, no season and very much focusing on the hospitality side, as it’s his land he could do what he wants but to me it would be terrible to not carry on doing what has been done for hundreds of years on this land, sadly people who are not involved or don’t get the opportunity to see what goes on just tend to see how we are portrayed in the media
  12. Thanks mate, hope the shoots not running you to ragged, what a perfect and lovely way to remember a good friend and knowing he’s always with you when you are out on the drive, an opportunity given to someone can change a life, I like you was given an opportunity and I grabbed it, the things I have seen and done from that one opportunity have been amazing and completely changed my life and now I’m in a position to give others the chance to do some of the things that I do and with a bit of luck they will enjoy and respect it in the same way we do ?
  13. It was a lovely thing to see, I wish I’d taken the camera with me, I couldn’t get close enough to get a picture with my phone, I’ve never seen one up there and it’s the first time I’ve ever seen one ermine in the wild ?
  14. Cracking front stuffer action ?
  15. Back up at the shoot this morning and what a difference a day makes, very dull and deathly quiet without the beaters and dogs charging through the woods, it was just hand feeding of 4 main drives today there wasn’t many birds about but it was mid morning when I got there so they will of had a wander, with any luck we should get one more good day out of it, I managed to account for a few more squizzers and got to sit and watch a pure white stoat chasing a field mouse, this is the first time I’ve seen one up here ?
  16. I never get into the cartridge/shot size argument, I just use whatever I have or whatever I’ve been given or whatever’s cheap they all kill sh*t, for example I was at the shoot this morning I had the semi auto with me and a squizzer ran out in front of me, I let it have it with a 40g 3’s mini magnum it was pretty dead but no more dead than if I’d shot it with a 26g clay load ?
  17. Cheers mate I appreciate that, To be fair the game shooting isn’t really my thing, what I like is putting on a good day for people and especially the young shots and people who haven’t done it before, yesterday I gave my gun to my mate Morris so I could run the beaters all day, for a keeper from a large estate to compliment you on the quality of your shoot is really nice, it proves that this is not a rich mans sport and if it’s done right it’s for everyone, fingers crossed we finish the season off with some more good weather ?
  18. I know a couple of keepers and they still use lamps but only use white, the reason is vehicle lights are white so they don’t seem to be bothered by them flashing across the land, like you I can never see what they are pointing them at but they don’t seem to have any problem clearing up the vermin
  19. Day 6 over with and we couldn’t of asked for a better day, we had a full team of beaters and two full teams of guns, the morning definitely shot better than the afternoon but this might have something to do with doing the main drives early, mainly to show the guests what sort of birds we can produce on our little shoot, we had one lad shooting with us today who is a keeper on one of the biggest estates around here and helped us out loads at the beginning when the birds weren’t doing to well, it was lovely to be thanked off him and told that the birds over him on the first drive were stunning a
  20. Quality picture, there’s nothing better than free range kids ?
  21. Very nice, Cracking write up as always, 236 yard eyeball is a hell of a shot ?
  22. Jesus, that looks like a wolf, pj’s bringing the luck again ?
  23. So as Hugo’s dad has been working his way through my cartridges for the last two seasons and has never put his hand in his pocket we came to the conclusion it was time to dig deep, now for some reason he thinks if it comes in a shiny box things die better, for the past few outings I’ve supplied him with 32g 5’s clear pigeon and they do the job nicely and at about 6 quid a box they are not the cheapest you can buy but not to bad, now he was looking at Hull high pheasant at 11 quid a box but eventually settled on black gold game, still at a hefty £87 for 250, they all go bang and if you hit them
  24. Day 6 tomorrow and there’s still loads about, as we approach the end of the season there will be no prisoners taken tomorrow, everyone will be told to get at them, there’s a few guests shooting tomorrow and they are proper shots, one been my mate Morris, so I’m expecting a good bag and some serious bird poaching which will no doubt lead to some good banter, I’ll be running the beaters so with any luck I can put on a good show for the guns
  25. ???? you will definitely deserve this little break with what’s coming your way in the next few weeks, make the most of it, before the madness of lambing starts ????
