Back up at the shoot this morning and what a difference a day makes, very dull and deathly quiet without the beaters and dogs charging through the woods, it was just hand feeding of 4 main drives today there wasn’t many birds about but it was mid morning when I got there so they will of had a wander, with any luck we should get one more good day out of it, I managed to account for a few more squizzers and got to sit and watch a pure white stoat chasing a field mouse, this is the first time I’ve seen one up here ?

I never get into the cartridge/shot size argument, I just use whatever I have or whatever I’ve been given or whatever’s cheap they all kill sh*t, for example I was at the shoot this morning I had the semi auto with me and a squizzer ran out in front of me, I let it have it with a 40g 3’s mini magnum it was pretty dead but no more dead than if I’d shot it with a 26g clay load ?

Cheers mate I appreciate that, To be fair the game shooting isn’t really my thing, what I like is putting on a good day for people and especially the young shots and people who haven’t done it before, yesterday I gave my gun to my mate Morris so I could run the beaters all day, for a keeper from a large estate to compliment you on the quality of your shoot is really nice, it proves that this is not a rich mans sport and if it’s done right it’s for everyone, fingers crossed we finish the season off with some more good weather ?

I know a couple of keepers and they still use lamps but only use white, the reason is vehicle lights are white so they don’t seem to be bothered by them flashing across the land, like you I can never see what they are pointing them at but they don’t seem to have any problem clearing up the vermin

Day 6 over with and we couldn’t of asked for a better day, we had a full team of beaters and two full teams of guns, the morning definitely shot better than the afternoon but this might have something to do with doing the main drives early, mainly to show the guests what sort of birds we can produce on our little shoot, we had one lad shooting with us today who is a keeper on one of the biggest estates around here and helped us out loads at the beginning when the birds weren’t doing to well, it was lovely to be thanked off him and told that the birds over him on the first drive were stunning a

Jesus, that looks like a wolf, pj’s bringing the luck again ?

So as Hugo’s dad has been working his way through my cartridges for the last two seasons and has never put his hand in his pocket we came to the conclusion it was time to dig deep, now for some reason he thinks if it comes in a shiny box things die better, for the past few outings I’ve supplied him with 32g 5’s clear pigeon and they do the job nicely and at about 6 quid a box they are not the cheapest you can buy but not to bad, now he was looking at Hull high pheasant at 11 quid a box but eventually settled on black gold game, still at a hefty £87 for 250, they all go bang and if you hit them

Day 6 tomorrow and there’s still loads about, as we approach the end of the season there will be no prisoners taken tomorrow, everyone will be told to get at them, there’s a few guests shooting tomorrow and they are proper shots, one been my mate Morris, so I’m expecting a good bag and some serious bird poaching which will no doubt lead to some good banter, I’ll be running the beaters so with any luck I can put on a good show for the guns

???? you will definitely deserve this little break with what’s coming your way in the next few weeks, make the most of it, before the madness of lambing starts ???? -
Last one of the year for me, was looking like a blank when I clocked this one on a big pile of sh*t, left it where it dropped, don’t know if it was a dog or a vixen, I wasn’t going to get up to my eyes in cow poo to find out, home in time for a G and T and to see in the new year with the bloody cat because this missus is spark out ( I should of stayed out ) all the best fella’s hope it’s a good one ?
-
Nice way to finish the year ?

A friend of mine was charged and convicted of common assault, he had his SGC and FAC taken away, 12 months later he applied for them back and got them, sadly since then he got into a drunken argument with his partner and she called the police saying she was in fear of her safety, he was arrested and his tickets taken away again, firearms told him he would have to be 5 years clear, but I would of thought there’s not a chief constable in the land that would put their name to that and he’s still with his missus 4 years later ( ? mental, she’d of been long gone if that was me )
-
It’s 5 years up here, but it’s still a bit off a lucky dip

All you can do is apply, it’s a bit of a lottery, depending on the force you are dealing with, just be completely honest with them, they will look into your record, even if you haven’t been charged/convicted with the offence, it’s still there for them to see, so you need to tell them everything otherwise it looks like you are hiding something because they already know you history, I had a few arrests and cautions from my younger days but like you I was never convicted of anything ( none of mine were for violence) I was granted SGC and shortly after FAC, but I have a mate who was refused a SGC

Some fine front stuffer action ?

Cheers lads, I’d like to think the air rifle lads would be proud of me, they love a bit of precision shooting, where as I’m just happy to hit it ?

A trip up to the shoot this morning for no other reason than a walk out and to take my mate up with his metal detector, after dropping him off I went over the far valley side and parked the quad up at the pen and walked all the forestry blocks that we don’t shoot and nobody from the shoot bothers going around, there was the odd pheasant and a large amount of deer, I came across two fox earths close to the tree line so gave a few minutes calling with the mouth call to no avail, I’m sure there’s many more earths amongst the trees and I’ve no doubt that they could be called out onto the rides, th

Definitely back in the action mr sausage, nice work ?

We always struggle for numbers this time of year, what I find is the people who turn up no matter what are the ones you want to be with anyway and even if the group is small and the weather is sh*t with good people you can always make a day of it

It’s definitely a territorial thing with them, the thing that made me think it was a dog was the speed it came in, in the past I’ve noticed that the vixen seems to be a bit more cautious when approaching a vixen in heat call -

Hahaha, they build them sturdy up here mate, everyone likes something to get hold of, even mr dog fox ? -
Well I’ve had enough of all this Christmas, family and people in general and as I’ve gone above and beyond with the niceties I was in need of a little stav time and when you can’t remember the last time you were at the foxes it’s time to get out, so doing something I don’t do very often, I mounted the lamp to the .243 grabbed the NV spotter and headed to the sheep farm as lambing gets underway in a couple of weeks, on arrival I bumped into the farmer and he proceeded to go into great detail of his days shooting with my mate who runs our little shoot, judging by the way he was propped up agains

Fingers crossed for you mate, on the up side if they are sitting as tight as our lasses sister does behind her sofa when the provy loan mans banging on the door they will flush well ?
