  1. I think your wrong about the last part. The top breeders bred what they were using. Perhaps you meant top peddlers. I had sons of Colby's Sam and grandsons.Good hogdogs nothing more.My buddy (atthetime)used them in hogdog catch competition when legal.I never spent a dime with Colby.I had a local friend .He bought them up and later gifted me most of them.Good hogdogs nothing else. You can find adult cold colby dogs for hog hunting usually for free from a greenhorn.I always considered it foolish to purchase a pup on bulldogs..The answers to the good ones are in the reports Mr Gnas
  2. Me and a buddy went to a creek over the weekend. Its a good place but full of cottonmouths. We caught a bunch but took a few pics. Smallmouth Cottonmouth came and checked out my kayak. I took my daughter's kayak as it has very shallow draft. We landed the kayaks to explore further downstream cause this area can't be kayaked as fallen trees everywhere from bad tornadoes. So we started wading. We caught several but we had 3 different battles with cottonmouths all I had for defense was my fishing pole WE were getting jumpy l
  3. Most of the good old men here are dead and gone. One of these old timers from my area passed away a month or so ago.Coincidentally this same old man gave me my first GOOD black terrier even though he only met me a few times. Thanks Thomas Smith for helping a redneck kid like me.I won't forget it.Rest in Peace Few he owned or bred
  4. I read strattons books as a kid and would recommend them but you must realize Stratton is a writer.not taken seriously by the real dogmen. It would be like y'all Brits ringing up Sean frain and asking him how to breed and dig terriers. I never met Stratton but B Sorrells bred to my friends redboy dog.Stratton begged for a pup.He was gifted one and sent it back said it was crazy ? Redboy dogs ain't made for living in the house ?
  5. Time well spent Mr bird.My father was the roughest toughest onryiest man in Dixie until my first daughter was born. Then he became a softie.? My father always says those grandchildren are his reward for not culling me ? I can sympathize with you.I have 2 teenage daughters and a wife.I went bald by 30 even though baldness doesn't run in my family. My first kid was born when I was 19.Its a hard miserable road starting that young.I love my girls and did what was necessary to give them a better future.Raising kids is hardwork no matter your age. Congratulations Mr greb
  6. Charlie Daniels died today.I thought I would post a few of his songs.Goodbye Charlie
  7. Redboy dogs ain't Colby bred according to the ones who were there. Colby dogs don't come rednose.I thought you would know that ?
  8. I've caught em in Florida if we talking about same thing . Good fight good shark bait.
  9. Usually my encounters with them have been accidental.I have caught some decent sized ones by hand while frog gigging but turned them back loose. We don't have as many as some other areas. There used to be an illegal market here for them. They ran traps in ponds and sold them which is illegal. It got shutdown. You can ride the roads where there is cowfields with ponds.Right before a big rain some of the snapping turtles will leave and venture across roads and fields to the next pond. This is when I generally see them.I don't remember ever eating one to be honest.
  10. Mayfield was out there. But was one of the best conditioners of his time.
  11. I was not around back in them days.Wasnt even born. But it's interesting to me you bring this up.Tudor had the English Tudor dogs generally black but also had another type. This was his gamer type strain. They were larger black maskwith white stripe and more mastiff and lippy. The men who kept these type family back in the day didn't like bullyson dogs.So there was a divide somewhat on the Tudor dogs. My mentor moved to the area where these dogs are from.He immediately went to one of these dogmens house and asked about a bullyson dog .The old man said sure I got one and
  12. 9/16 grey 7/16 bull if I read it correctly.
  13. I preferred blackmouth above the others.None of the type we had were registered. Most growl alot and walk around bristled up.They have just enough bulldog in them to get them in trouble.I have seen a few that were catchdogs they never bayed a day in their life. Catahoulas can be just as good but are more eccentric. Some are gun shy man shy or man eaters. Most blackmouth or catahoula curs do not have as good of a nose as hound but tons of grit. They will run a hog by sight or nose whichever they need. The last BMC I had would listen for hogs standing on his hind legs, running through briars
  14. I had to look up how much a stone weighs ? I would guess your right on weight and other parts too. When you have 3 or 4 dogs pulling against you it is a major struggle so hog could possibly weigh a little less just guessing. I couldn't tell which dog bit him.If it was a catchdog I would cull.If it was a catahoula that's normal ? catahoulas don't like strangers especially black ones.
  15. Coyotes here need watching and will snatch a terrier.here they weigh30-40lbs. Coyotes out in California look like wolves!
  16. I have talked to him on the phone once or twice. He seemed very knowledgeable. He hunts very different terrain than I do as he is at opposite end of country. California is the most restricted on hunting as far as I know. When I spoke to him he preferred a f1 cross racing Greyhound apbt for coyotes and hogs. Edit to say I haven't spoken to him in 10+ plus years
  17. The smallest one I seen that caught hogs for years was a 28lb bitch.named chocolate.pedigree unknown.I first seen her at a buddies in Georgia.some redneck cut her ears off and did a poor job.My buddy in Georgia used her to catch hogs for years.A local friend here in Alabama asked me for a good catch dog.I called my buddy in Georgia and he sold her for $200.These boys hunted with her till she was old.I think she got bred once but I didn't keep up with pups. She was extremely dog aggressive but did her job very well. She caught some record book hogs here. This poor little dog wasn't famous bu
  18. It's not as hard here if you know some hog hunters you can trust.I was offered a little chocolate bitch a few months ago. Someone new to the sport would have a hard time I'm afraid. The average apbt here is a fat useless couch potato same as their owners nowdays.
  19. Thanks yessir it's done especially with catahoulas, curs and jag you can breed a good catchdog to foxhound or coonhound or birddog and get good hogdogs, We call them running catchdogs. They will generally find and catch an average hog but they generally die when they meet a big wild one. These type have cost me just as much in vet bills as catchdogs have. They don't let nothing get away. Looking back I personally didn't keep true baydogs. My "baydogs" were the running catchdog type you speak of.They only bayed after getting cut down.THIS is also why you keep catchdog on leash otherwise he will be d
  20. Just an old bulldog that came from Florida.A lot of catchdogs don't have a pedigree. He lived to be old which is rare for a catchdog.
  21. Thanks Mr Jetro His name was popeye.I had him catching hogs at 6 months old.I was young and dumb but he overcame that.I learned alot since then.
  22. I have posted these before but will again. These was from teenage years.they are pictures of a picture.nothing special but shows a few of the type used in Alabama and in Florida, Georgia Pictures was usually taken when someone new came out.Sadly I have no pictures of some of the best dogs I owned. This was before cell phone cameras. I don't think any of these hogs weighed over 100 lbs.
  23. Any good baydog will catch as soon as catchdog catches. You should know that ? Plott men don't use catchdogs at all 3 or 4 good plotts will stretch any hog but most will die. It has nothing to do with size. Its a mentality.Give no quarter.Ive seen 30 lb catchdogs hit a wild 250lb boar so hard it broke the hogs jaw and the bitch lost a few teeth. Most real hog hunters in Dixie would rather have 1 specialized bay dog and 1 specialized catchdog.Thats all that's usually a young baydog that's along for the ride. If you ever trespass while hog hunting you will understand why I wou
