  1. can take up to 2 weeks or so for the swelling to subside but you should start noticing a difference in the first week.
  2. Stealthy's litters make 12 that i know of this year alone from failed Vasectomies... be wary folks...
  3. lol i THINK 23... UGG... mind if i borrow your photo as evidence of this is what happens when a Vasectomy fails ??
  4. definitely stock up.. by 5 weeks my litter of 17 last year were makin their way quickly through a rabbit a day...
  5. lol grandpa always knows EVERYTHING!!!
  6. Same deal with my current nursing jill Cammy.... If i hadn't been paying close attention i wouldn't have noticed the increased lethargy and exhaustion on day 45 with no kits... took her to the vet.. ended up with a C section ... could have lost her... as it was 4 of the 6 kits were too weak (due to being overdue and close to demise) to nurse, the entire litter had to be hand fed the first 24 hours... by then we lost 4... If we breed our animals we take responsiblity for them in that condition... and that means monitoring that condition.
  7. the reason for the advice about yolk only is because TOO much white can lead to alopecia... it inhibits a hormone that can make them lose their hair ... a whole egg now and then though isn't gonna hurt... feed up your jill.. she'll be losing condition quite quickly nursing that many, lots of fresh meat.. fattier the better just now... if she becomes dehydrated you might consider electrolyte powder for her in her water if she starts skipping the bones (one of my jills did) crush and powder an eggshell and put it in her meal to keep her calcium up.. you know YOUR jill... the best a
  8. if they are having a phantom it will last about 6 weeks.. same as preganncy.. they will do all the same stuff.. get fat... moult, pull fur from belly and legs .. make nests.. drag each other around... on the off chance it isn't a phantom.. might wanna seperate at least the pair together if you have other ferrets.. for the time being i saw 6 litters born of vas hobs last year.... just sayin.... lol
  9. I think its more a case of watching and knowing YOUR jill and your relationship with her... as said in a previous post.. if you're tending her properly before hand.. every single thing in her bed and hutch will smell of you... if it isn't .. you've already screwed up by not having a good bond with your animal, so yeah you're gonna end up with problems... Never had a litter eaten myself or neglected cause i poked my two cents in.. and i handle them plenty.. but i've only had 5 or so litters so maybe i've just been lucky with the kits i've raised... if a jill tells you to get the
  10. mllinium dome, Diana and Charles wedding, Boeing used them regularily till the 60's, used by a contractor in New Zealand Regularily.... on and on! Handy things!
  11. i go with ferret lady on this one.. i wait until 10 - 12 weeks... they go with most nip training and litter training done... all around better deal in the end
  12. we've been planning to come up and camp with the ferrety crew but they're calling for snow.... dont know if i want 7 hour drive up from south devon just to camp in the snow and wet... UGG... really enjoyed this show last year!!
  13. if its a basic infection to be treated with anti biotics.. you're looking at your vets standard consult fee plus meds (here in Devon it would run about $20 if the vet feels it may be a bit more sinister like a Pyometria... a serious womb infection, they may advise an emergency spay with the resulting charges for that... (consult plus £40) there are other possiblities but those are the two that i've come up against myself
  14. i think ganging together is the way to go this year regarding breeding.. get a few of your ferreting mates together who would plan to breed... select a good pair between the group of you and divy up the kits ... make sure you have homes lined up for any extras before putting the jill to the hob ...
  15. size isn't the biggest issue, though it should still be appropriately sized for your ferret... they need seperate areas for all things.. ie the poo corner shouldn't be right next to the bed or food etc... the bigger thing is limiting levels.. as she becomes heavier and after, starts draggin kits about.. you dont really want her climbing ladders or stuffing them down tubes and tunnels... i had a poor dear one year who got so big she couldn't lift herself into a hammock the last 3-4 days ... she looked plain miserable.. make sure the nesting box is spacious and i would say make the entran
  16. i had two nursing jills together last year... they did a grand job together... a concern may be moving kits though... if the jills have more than one dark safe place to PUT the kits.. they'll move them around a LOT.. and in the course of things... kits can get lost, pulled tug o war style or cold ... i had this happen when they busted out of their cage and stashed 17 kits in my sitting room! one was found in a shirt under a chair.. lost and forgotten for several hours... the kit was fine and all.. but it could have been a problem if they had been out in a court ... if the jills
  17. its possible its something like an intestinal blockage... you said you didn't want to go with surgery etc... which is fair enough considering the old boys age and previous history... but there are a few "remedies" you could try that may shift a blockage.. hairball paste for cats/ ferrets vaseline about 1/2 teaspoon or so and pumpkin puree or other type of squash, but pumpkin is best these will help "grease" the insides and if it is a simple blockage it can help them pass it good luck at the vet!
  18. if your jills have been spayed they will no longer come into season at all.. no jabs required.. as to your current problem.... you said he was snipped. or whatever.... have a look... does he have testes? if so.. he's either vasectomised or NOT done at all... either way he will be wanting to mate.. even though she isn't ready and to be honest neither are YOU! if he doesn't have any bits at all... he's been castrated... and will no longer show the urges to mate... in that case He's just being mean... give them a little time... you haven't said how long you've had them together.. did t
  19. Once He's castrated give it about a week.. He'll forget it ever happened and forget what He was messin with her for lol.. it will also allow time for her to come out of season after her jab.. However be prepared for a possible phantom pregnancy and or hormonal changes that will have her dragging HIM around and putting him to bed like a kit....
  20. Down here in Devon.... Our vet charges,, £3.82 for Jill Jab plus £13.00 Consulut.. However if you're having more than one jill jabbed you only pay the single consult fee.. which can work out reasonable if you have several jills in season. £35.00 For Castration £37.50 for Vasectomy £40.00 for Spay All includes: surgery, all meds, post op care, 3 day checkup and emergency treatment between op and check up should there be surgery related problems. Personally they do such a very Neat and tidy job of it .. i'd pay much more... a good vet is worth their weight in gol
