  1. a ferret on anothe forum i read was just diagnosed with a tapeworm.... so i guess it Can happen
  2. there's a bit of evidence that non specific white patches can be indictive of genetic mishaps...
  3. Yes the Black Footed Ferrets natural prey in the wild was the prairie dog... i think ferrets would bolt them alright.. Glad to see its legal in the states... as i had heard ferreting was illegal.. shrugs.. go figure!
  4. Does that mean they can catch kennel cough because my two bitches have a dose at the moment. Yes ferrets Can get kennel cough...
  5. my hubby was saying that every 7 yrs a new strain is released, as the few survivors develope immunities which are then passed on to young, so the next 6 yrs the occurance of mixy slows a lil each year until the new strain is released, and the proceding spring you see a more virulent spread of it. mind you i've no idea if this is fact or rumor...
  6. plain mild soap and water does it for me, and if it starts looking red or anything try a lil hydrogen peroxide ( NO not the hair dye stuff ) its mild but effective, it will bubble away any bacteria and germ growing proteins and make it easier to heal.
  7. Hi, I've got three ferrets, two jills and a hob. I've been made aware of possible dangers of leaving a jill in heat etc. and i know some of the options are Jabs, Speying, and using a Vasectomized hob to bring her out of heat. I'm wondering what the pros and cons and opinions on these options are? I've been told that most vets will only jab once in a jills life as its too dangerous of a chemical mix or something ?? bad info ?? and that using a Vasectomized hob may not be good either as it can result in phantom pregnancies which i guess are somehow bad for the jill as well? and
  8. are there spiders in the UK that are venemous enough to do this kinda damage ? i was sorta under the impression that they were mostly the non venemous sorts here ?
  9. if you're interested in supplimenting them with dry food for the hot months why not consider a ferret food ? James Wellbeloved does a good one as does Chudley's and Excel but be warned that the Excel food has been suspected of causing some bladder problems though this has not been substatiated... another choice might be to continue feeding raw (which we know is best for them ) but clean out the cages a lil more thoroughly and discard anything that isn't eaten while fresh... could also gasp shock i know its spoiling them... cook what you give them as it will last a lil longer.. but all in
  10. at the moment i believe the american company that supply's it.. 8 in 1 is having export paperwork problems... i've not seen it or been able to order it from my local pet stores, but i live in a sleepy lil area of devon so i'm not sure about the big shops. I have gotten mine from Companion's Choice online and others have gotten it from ebay.
  11. on another forum it seems the debate that you cant actually BREED working ability into a ferret.. ie.. breed good workers and the result will be good workers... is this the case ? or as you say... perhaps saving the poor boy from the chop in the event you should want a few more of his get? what do you all think of the same case being made for the jills ? .... spay them or the jab for a few years till you decide you dont want to breed them ? just keep em seperated ? NOT picking fights here guys .. just wanting to make a good informed decision.
  12. Hi i'm looking for some advice from those ferreters that use or have used both whole and fixed hobs. Do you think it hinders their performance or desire to work being fixed ? we're not looking to breed and have just picked up another lil hob, my Husband has been told that neutering them makes them less effective hunters ? not knowing the answer i figured i'd come to the experts lol..
  13. Two methods of doin it the easy way... First ... a two person method.. one scruffs ( ferret goes limp ) the other clips.. ( regular nail clippers work fine and you can see what you're doin ) dont bother with the back unless they look desperate.. and they wont often! Second.. ferretone on the belly.. look up Companions Choice on the net they sell it decent priced. smells like chocolate.. put ferret on your lap.. dribble some on its belly.. Instantly distracted ferret wouldn't care if you were cutting off its tail they like the stuff so much lol.. same method.. nail clips and stay calm
  14. ahhh haaa... Great idea... we've got mole problems... and we're ATTEMPTING to train the fuzzies to a box with the wood based stuff... we'll give it a Try.. Thanks for a good idea!
  15. not sure if it will or not, but if you cant find a vet or ferret group local that might have some experience with kangaroo meat, then perhaps try just a little and watch how they react. i cant see it HURTING them, but it may not provide all needed nutrients or cause upset stomachs... best bet would be to ask a vet i think!
  16. my suggestion if it is mites or a skin condition is a bath... a mild baby soap .. and a lil baby moisturizer... see if you can clean up the area... and if it IS from hay or shavings ( they do harbor nasties pretty well ) you can try taking it out for a while ... just toss a couple fleecies or old t shirts in the bedding box for them instead. ( After a good clean that is...) I agree about goin to the vet... lol if you can sort it at home.. you'll be saving lots of money
  17. lol make it a snickers and i'd work for that .. what a great pic! just shows kids are good form somthin' eh ?
  18. Hi this is called Rats tail and is a normal happening seen especially with albino's though others get it too... check for lil blackhead looking spots etc... you can try using some acne clearing stuff as it does help clear out the pours but its not crucial... usually has something to do with a molting season, stress, or hormones... most people i know who have had this happen find the next winter coat finds the hair back as full and fluffy as ever... the only thing ot watch for is it creaping up the back and sides.. which can be a sign of an adrenal disease... Rat tailed ferrets (tail alopec
