I always saw it as a very pagan symbol so didn't expect to see it on a Christian gravestone....though it is on a Celtic Cross. The grave yard has a few graves with Masonic symbols on them as well

I googled his name(Furnell) along with freemason,  he was grandmaster of Limerick  lodge
