Used to be about 15 legal seine netters on the Dart which I was in a crew as a kid. They dropped the number of licences year on year till there was none, didn't help a bit. Mono gill nets came I'm guessing about 35 - 40 years ago. Every Postman and Fireman that had a small boat and spare time shot hundreds of yard of net close into shore and so did commercial boats. Salmon follow the shore they got hammered. Now it's the Seals they reckon there is over 20 in the river Dart alone and large numbers on every headland, over 30 in Brixham harbour. The Wife was sat on a bench by the river chatting to her work colleague and watch a Seal smash 3 Salmon or Sea Trout in half a hour. That about 12 miles inland. The first weir on the river is here and often 3 of the buggers working the foot of the weir smashing fish after fish, they don't stand a chance. Cheers Arry

Cheers Arry Arry I remember mono coming out when I was at school,I had a small natural fibre net 15-20 yards long, still got fish but when a guy I knew who poached salmon showed me a mono and told me where he got it,and said he would show me how to hang one,I went to CoSalt in shields and got a net, paid for itself multiple times over the first time I ran it out. I watched some footage a while ago some bloke standing on the edge of a river, throwing a cast net in,got over a hundred decent salmon in a few hours for dog food. Neal 1,929
I know I've said this on here before, but I think some people are missing the point. It's not supposed to be a programme about fishing for people who know what they're doing. It's a programme about two good mates of a certain age who are out and about and enjoying life. The fishing is almost incidental. They could be playing sunday league football, knitting or train spotting. The fun is in watching the dynamic between them. Sharing their health worries, talking about the old days and taking the piss out of each other.

eastcoast 4,504
I think the original concept was two oldish blokes that had heart problems and had recovered just spending time together and talking shite/pondering the meaning of life sort of thing. Of course they are both famous comedy performers but oldish, white , male and it would seem heterosexual. Rarely seen on TV these days apart from Bangers and Cash. I enjoyed the 1st series but it did become boring after that.

But i do like the program , there both good, ive watched all the programs and enjoyed them, take it for what it is ,( light easy entertainment )
