I may be wrong Dan, but joined a Facebook group which is a club on this particular river and they are posting catching trout spinning with lures so I presumed was all above board ? Am probably wrong but thought I'd ask ? Cheers

Sorry Leo mate,You can fish for non migrating trout on the rivers, check local bye laws for any  restrictions, spin ,fly or worm, normally no maggots, your EA  rod licence covers you for coarse fish in season,non- migratory trout and eels👍

I had a couple of hours on the farm pond with a mate .

It started badly when he arrived to pick me up and realised he'd  left his close- up glasses at home.

He  wisely wasn't  keen on my offer to tie his hooks on for him so we nipped to his house to collect his specs.

Fishing with with Stu always encompasses a degree of comedy . To anyone watching from a (safe) distance the phrase "Like monkeys playing the piano." might come to mind .

On this occasion totally independently we had  decided that as well as our proper rods we would bring along some less than suitable tackle .

Stu was desperate  to catch his first tench and very seriously  rigged a neat 12' float rod with that in mind . The out of the blue he produced a classic 1960s vintage 6 foot solid glass boys' rod complete with knackered  Prince of Darkness reel!

I trumped him with one of those novelty devices that looks like a Biro but morphs onto a 3 foot telescopic rod . This was set off with a tiny multiplier the size of a cotton reel .20250614_190919.jpg.fc255721e04f8bd7743dad47d7f0834b.jpg

Casting range was ,er,  limited.

While our proper gear fished in what had previously proved  hotspots failed  dismally the comedy tackle accounted for very nearly a bite a cast .

Obviously the fish were tucked up near the bank . None were very big though.20250615_092801.jpg.6b1bf38ed8a361b4b3c0980cd629e417.jpg

My best was a carp of about 12 ounces . Considering l was using something more akin to the aerial from a Mk 1 Escort than a fishing rod  and a reel with zero retrieve ratio  it still managed to create a fair bit of hilarity!

Eventually the float on my mate's proper rod began to wiggle in what looked   like a tenchy manner. I kept quiet .

Then Stu was in . The look on his face when he realised he had latched onto one of the pond's elusive greenies was one of absolute  glee.20250615_102153.jpg.65c778c8e03e651b9ddb8f80e9d91b67.jpg

A few minutes later Stu had caught his first tench!

As light was failing and  it was fair walk back to the yard where our car was parked  we decided to finish on a high and head back .

The  Fates of comedy had one last trick up their sleeve though .    The electric gates on the farmyard  had jammed shut!

Few hours early this morning for trout and chub on the lures . Had 3 brownies and lost one on a smith d contact and had 2 chub on duo spearhead ryukis . Was a bit bright though , probably would have been better at dusk
