Metal detecting Guys

Recommended Posts

After a rough rain and blowing night the suns out so thought I would have a go at the little paddock again. Probably an old orchard with the apple trees long gone. Bloody cold wild mind.

Well hit on an old purse find over about six square foot most of these coins from it and the little cat neckless. The old Cap gun and the older coin at the bottom from a different part of the paddock.

Still I'm happy 2 three pence pieces one silver, 4 sixpences 2 silver, 7 halfpennies, 8 pennies oldest 1901, 2 two shilling pieces, 2 half crowns.

See a geezer metal detecting other day on farmers fields in St Albans. Bet there’s some stuff to be had there all over Roman verulum. They recently found some big finds

It was thought the Romans didn't get as far was as South Devon but they found a Villa in a place called ippelepen near me which we ferret. He won't let me metal detect as its all horse paddocks.

Not much history of the Vikings here as well.

Still I did find that Roman coin the other day which is encouraging for me.

Well lads was out the last two day as it's nice weather. Only one nice coin a Victoria farthing 1861.

But then found what I think maybe some Roman gaming pieces or weights. You more experienced guys any ideas???

No idea what hammered is in relation to detecting, But i took a mate out with his detector whilst exercising my dogs at the time, 5 minutes and he found one of the silver little coins that they use to cut pieces off, made him happy what ever it was,

Is that a cross cut penny ‘Arry?

Still not found a Hammered Mack. Yeah they are thin silver coins that had a cross on them that they sometimes cut in half.

I'll send to my niece mate, she has a degree in ancient history and archaeology... was on her first dig last year in Nottingham, 6 month placement... struggling a bit to get archaeology work at the moment though...

She is an encyclopedia on roman times, artifacts etc, ancient history is really her thing.
