Loved them all and had success,.. and of course,..failures with them all..

AS for trainability

Well, this is a curious affair and really depends upon one's requirements and concept,. of trainability..

Personally,..I like a jukel with plenty of smarts and which can understand my ways,...I've never needed a hunting pal that is super -inteligent.. Such canines are in the same league as some humans who posess amazing Mensa -like mental acumen, but are frequently useless boring feckers, when walking into the cold night, behind a bold lurcher and spotlight.   What we do as hunting men is not, Rocket Science...

AS an example, I was once out running a few Hares with Socks  off here,...we were accompanied by a powerful and capable, specialist coursing -bred dog. The big old felleh killed his hares and certainly twigged onto the 'boxing clever' style of keeping his quarry away from the safety of the hedgerows.

We were hunting in Hampshire and the fields were surrounded by lots of high hedges, so he had to get the job done and dusted , or the hares would have soon been away..

As the morning progressed  we decided it was time to leave the area.. and we crossed the Border into Wiltshire. 

Our aim was to ferret a few rabbits on a nice estate, plus keep our eyes peeled for any Roe that might be on offer. 

The lurcher's owner assured me that his dog was pretty lethal on deer and could overhall them , no problem.

 I believed him...

I'll be honest, and I feel sure Sock's will back me up on this,...I was a tad concerned as to how this coursing dog would handle himself on a large rabbit warren .. Facts were, he behaved admirably and not only honoured the ferrets, but was superbly quick on sudden bolters.. Quite a shock actually,..and when everyone ajourned to the Pub,..the old dog was left outside curled up, whilst a few pints were downed.

As the image will reveal, we are looking at a heavilly Saluki influenced hybrid...

 Makes ya think, eh

good thread phil  on the post, just goes to show, they aint all got to be herding type xs , but i am bit like you  your self , i do like  a very biddable type dog  norm most herding type xs are , i do like good recall in a dog, more so at night, if you jumped over the fence  like with all have as they say lol, Buck was fecker when he was younger , full on after his quarry , i was well glad when caught his target lol, but he did calm down abit as he got older .

Like I told Peterhunter few year ago I can go out 2 dogs at heal on the lamp let 1 go the other won't move until told stay ,put its the only way 4a serious lamper
