If they were that far advanced why would they? 

They would have the technology to observe us from afar I should imagine. 

The real question is, will we ever have the technology to discover alien life ourselves.

I think one of my ex girlfriend’s years ago was a alien id been going out with her for a month or so one day out the blue she started on at me saying about hunting being cruel an how farm animals shouldn’t be confined it was only then I realised the bitch was from another planet an it’d be cruelty to the human race to keep on plowing such a species I dropped her like a sack of rotten spuds to go back to what planet the alien was from

I watched one of those Brian Cox programs one night - he reckons it's more to do with time than distance. 

......... he was saying that in an ever expanding universe, planets and civilisations will be coming and going and that it would be unlikely that 2 would exist in the same time and be capable of contacting each other.

 

It's an interesting subject for sure

This is true in accordance with our basic understanding of physics, maths and the mechanics of the universe... BUT (lol this will fuuck ya heads) If the universe IS infinite, then everything we can ever imagine exists somewhere. At the same time and also not, including parallel civilizations of other species Fuuck, if the universe is infinite, then God, Allah and ascension to Nirvana is all true

Right so this is briefly why I have changed my mind. For those that accept there is likely to be many advanced alien races out there, there are commonly two arguments used as to why we haven't been visited by any of them.

1. That the distances are too great given the speed of light is a limit to travelling these distances
2. That they would have destroyed us with their superior technology

To those that don't accept there are likely life on other planets/systems/galaxies then there's no point in reading further. 

On 1.

This assumes that faster than light technologies are impossible for a start. I'd be hesitant to believe that. But more importantly, it seems very plausible if not inevitable that at some point a technological species transition from being purely biological to being technological. ie time is only a factor given finite lifetimes, no one wants to waste their life driving. But if a species gets around this concern either through mastering medicine or leaving their biological bodies behind entirely then suddenly time is meaningless. So what if it takes three million years to get to the next galaxy? Or five years to get to the next star system?

On 2.

The history of more advanced civilisations meeting less advanced ones is indeed a history of the advanced one dominating and essentially destroying the lesser one. But that wasn't driven by an innate desire to dominate the less advanced, it was driven by the desire to take their resources for economic or geostrategic benefit. Places with non of these were given little to no effort to bring under imperial rule. So I ask, what does this planet offer that can't be found in abundance literally everywhere else in the galaxy? The only answer is biological life! As far as we are aware that is pretty rare! Now the only value I can think that Earth would have to a vastly advanced species is an opportunity to study life. IMO the only thing of value we can offer is data to alien biologists! There's f**k all else we have to make Earth worth invading/destroying etc.

In terms of evidence, I offer none, I'd say most of it is BS. But the Nimitz incident is very curious!

Just because infinity allows for the possibility, it doesn't mean an infinite number of chimps with an infinite number of typewriters WILL type War and Peace, it just means they COULD !

Got to disagree gents. IF there was such a thing as infinity then by definition it would happen. But I do not accept that anything is infinite, it's mathematical nonsense.

But to study us they would have to be  advanced enough to have discovered us thus will have already studied us which removes the need to visit us.
