It’s been frosty the last couple of mornings, it’s very welcome , hopefully it will kill a few bugs . Unfortunately the Maize and cover crops don’t like it and they will soon be unviable as a drive .

A wander around the shoot this evening for no other reason than I wanted to go for a walk, obviously I had a rifle over my shoulder and tonight’s rifle of choice was the .17. It was 50/50 if I was going to get soaked as it seemed to be raining all around me but it was warm and I thought I’m waterproof so set off, passing the beast field next to the farm I shot a couple of rabbits that would no doubt be heading over to the garden to finish off the row of peas they have had a good go at, heading over the far side of the shoot I stopped when I noticed some movement in the bracken, rifle up on the sticks and expecting a cub or two but no, just a couple of pigs play fighting. So after watching them for a minute or so I carried on to the spring barley where I could see a pair of ears poking out the crop, as I approached the fallow doe stud up followed by a stunning looking fawn, no more than a week or two old, I watched them for a good 15 minutes before she guided her young back to the safety of the forestry, it was worth the 4 mile walk just to see them, a very pleasant couple of hours out ?

I’ve had the first batch last week , I was going to be having the second load Monday, but we’ve put them off till Friday because of this rain . The first lot are good . But I’m keeping my eye on them , this wet and warm can be a breeding ground for illness . So far so good , but I’m touching wood . If I can get them past this wet and into some dry weather next week without medication, I think I will be out of the woods as I will lift the wire then .
