Covid 19: What’s the lesson ?

I wouldn’t presume to tell an ex miner who was there about the miners strike mate but I can tell you my view of it nowadays.

From what I can see now, it was two powerful organisations (the unions and the government) manoeuvring against each other for the normal reason (power) and those men were the pawns and victims in it all.

Not saying it’s a fact, just how I see it and I see now that if we could have taken the union out of the equation we should have supported those men and those communities because it was in hindsight an attack on the British male himself.

But supporting them would have meant empowering the union and ultimately they never had Britain’s best interest at heart either......like all men in power, it was all about feathering their own nest same as the governments they claimed to despise

jmho

Totally agree with that comment it was the change we did not want and the change to British society has not been for the better imho.

The decline of the coal industry was because it simply wasn't economically viable, harsh but true.

We could import Polish coal far cheaper.

And lets not forget, the EU that so many of these socialists like Owen Jones hold in high esteem was originally called The European Coal & Steel Community., meant to equalise prices across Europe.

Didn't work out that way, did it ?

Cheers.

But between them mate, and I used to take the exact same view you do, I believe the unions and the government could have made it economically viable.....but they didn’t want to, they used the men and the industry in their silly games.

While we could buy a ton of coal cheaper from many places across the World, is it really cheaper in the long run with all the money thats been payed out in benefits to ex miners and their families and the complete devastation of the communities where they live

You're right, but governments of all colours only look at the short term, to the next election.

Thatcher saw the Heath government brought down, and wasn't going to allow that to happen to a second Tory government, no matter what.

We are only pawns in the Real Politik game of chess.

Cheers.

I’m sitting here having a mug of tea and I’m smiling.

This thread in the last couple of pages is a perfect example of the gift mainstream politics has delivered the last 30 years.

Its lads who would have formerly held very opposing views and probably been pretty bitter towards each other coming together and talking sensibly and realising it’s not us, it’s “them”

Well in boys, bloody well in ?

I've mellowed mate ! LOL ! I've learned to debate and discuss, rather than argue, like I did years ago.

Must be an age thing  ?

Cheers.

The last 10 years of my life I have taken a totally different view on so many things mate.

I also think it’s worth talking and enjoy the discussion but unfortunately my upbringing taught that some people just require a “f**k off” it’s not worth trying to be normal with them ! Lol ?

It was never about the price of coal, that was an excuse

In my opinion (although I would say it's as clear as day) it was about the 'de-industrialization' of Great Britain in order to get us where we are today. It's the same with this Virus. The Virus is not crippling anything, the Government in charge is and the powers of big business behind them. Simples

The only way it's cheaper in their view is if it is the beginning of a new 'Long range' business plan to bring all European countries to the same level playing field (ie No competition with each other). That's what the European union is all about and what globalism is all about. Money has nothing to do with it and never will.
