As you said the  mastiff lacks drive for pp work  a bull terrier sorts that because of the terrier mentality Has more drive or gameness 
 

same reason the put a terrier to a bull dog in the first place 

I meant it adds prey drive.Something which is usefull when training a pp dog especially for somebody that would also like to compete in working trials.Prey drive and gameness or bravery have got absolutely nothing to do with eachother.Have you not thought about the other reasons that bull blood may also have been added to the mastiff to produce bandogs?Its not all about trying to produce a dog that you need a bat to make it release you know.

So they wanted to put a dog to a mastiff To add  high prey drive but no gameness should a used a beagle or spaniel instead  a bull terrier lol
with a bull terrier prey drive and gameness normally hand in hand

Just because you use APBT and cross it with another dog doesn't automatically mean they will be game dogs, hell even most APBT's are not game.

You get a bull terrier put it to grey they might not be dog aggressive game but are game when it comes to things there hunting

Spot on.Especially once you've watered it down to 25% or less and then selectively bred for traits that have nothing to do with what bulldogs were originally bred for.

if that bloke was a mastiff he’d huff puff Make a noise  and do f**k all 

the mastiff has prey drive it wantS to bite but it’s not game enough To engage
