I had a dobie back in the 80s. I don't know if it's still the same but there used to be 2 "types"- the German bloodline or the American. I had a German one which was a lot stockier and heavier than the so-called American ones.

 

He wasn't much of a guard, but used to drive you nuts barking at anything. Had to have him pts at 8 due to spondulosis.

 

Back then the brown ones used to have terrible skin. And they used to breed "blue" ones if you could afford them. Maybe they still do?

i had a blue import late ,s rommell the b*****d if he didnt bite hed fk ya i got him to gaurd and he done the job well bit a few lol, , hed run a hare and hed quater like a gundog pushing rabbit and pheasant , had some fun with him gauarding a bit of acreage, good lad they all not built like him tho , he loved to bush with the terriers and run with the lurchers he didnt retrieve but hed eat on the spot lol had to et rid after he killed my sheep and he kept coursing next doors horses , all in all a fkn lunatic

I stopped and had a chat with a lad the other week who was walking 2 very capable looking Dobermans they were German imports cropped eared jobs he was going into the bloodlines and how they were from protection stock etc.....might of been useless for all i know but certainly looked the part.

 

Funnily enough a woman down the road has a very aggressive imported bitch that she's bred from a few times,looks the part,but if you look closer it's all fear.

I seen it going for another dog a few weeks ago and when the other dog went back for her,her bark went up in pitch an you could see she was stressed and not sure of herself.

 

That's what got me thinking about them.

was it a ginger haired fella over Canning Town way with a couple of chocolate ones.My pal over there has a couple and although they're good for them they're still not all that.Very Scatter brained and although they would get into someone in prey drive I don't know why he ducks about with them as he has much better dogs.

They still have a reputation,but they're soft,unhealthy and generally useless now.

The fact they still have a reputation when they've been completely ruined for so long must mean something.

How would you describe them?

I know what you mean, there one type of dog , I never have one as they lack bottle , my sister- in law had one a bitch , they make lot of noise but that it , get a well bred Alsatian from e/e lines you wont beat them, or a well bred rottie they very good .But one breed that are very good guards that don't mess about are well bred ridgebacks , they take some stopping deff , I seen one years ago on a farm it would bite you no prob good dog ridgeback .

There's good and bad in all breeds Ray. You say your sister had a shit bag of a Doberman. My missus cousin has got 2 ridgebacks. They are 10 stone a piece and struggle to drag their arses off the sofa never mind see what's happening.

 

Fat, useless, lazy wankers. Like the owner. Lol.

 

Get a good dobe and you won't need anything else. It's just finding one.

 

that's it gaz good/bad in all breeds , one of the best guards I saw was big black gsd x lab or something lol kept on a farm , it kept on a chain , bloody big hairy thing it was let loose at night, but don't think you could do that to day , this was few years ago , I spoke of it before . like nik_b said with that big gsd the damage it done, you get sent down to day having dog like that loose to day and having a farm collie bite bad , never mind a dob or ridgeback and deff Alsatian
