I really want to find a good bushing dog for flushing out rabbits and foxes. What is the best all rounder for this sort of thing? I guess some sort of terrier maybe? open to suggestions........... Only thing with terriers the drop on. bit of brains with the russell but like you say they are an earth dog at heart, beagles can be good but then it swings the other way and they haven't the heart in some situations. jcm 2,326 Posted September 23, 2016 Report Share Posted September 23, 2016 Down to personal preference, a terrier will flush them from cover but could also follow it to ground, time to pull the spade out. A spanial would also flush what you want from cover and is less likely to go to ground. I'v got a terrier my self and my next busher will be a spanial as I'd like more control over my busher and my current busher will drop to ground when ever he gets the chance 2 Quote Link to post

To go the earth or not go to earth that is the question lol, I think terrier is the best but like you lads mentioned do you want to take it all the way these days! Quote Link to post

Only problem with spaniels is from what ive seen they have a keen instinct for game birds, This would pose a problem as i don't want to upset the keepers. Are spaniels more biddable than terriers? jiggy 3,207 Posted September 23, 2016 Report Share Posted September 23, 2016 Springer is probably the best if left to range out but are bred to hunt silent in fieldtrials so aren,t natural barkers. A big size of terrier of any sort or cross with a brain and drive will bush foxes once they get a bit of work with experienced dogs they will pick it up. Preferably a dog that yaps on foxes and lets you know which direction its heading but not a dog that barks at hare/deer/rabbit/pheasant and ends up drawing the rest of pack on a wild goose chase screaming its head off. Seen a few big pure foxterriers do well bushing and were to windy to go to ground which is a good thing but would scream there heads off going through cover. You dont need a really gamey dog as long as he hunts cover and makes noise the fox will leave. 1 Quote Link to post

I have a terrier he's great at bushing he'll also stay until dug to, 7 foot under a public footpath last season was a fun one lol Quote Link to post
