lets be honest about this. lads that work proper stuff either if its lurchers or terriers wouldnt dream of selling pups at lurcher shows.they dont need too.i hope their is a crack down on pups being sold at fairs all over.a lot of the time its lads trying to make money selling dirt.serious dog men would agree fairs are not for selling pups.

The Irish Game Fair committee is very supportive of all country sports and in particular have shown outstanding support for working terriers.   Contrary to what was posted earlier about the terrier

I've never been to any of your shows/ faira Albert but I admire what you are trying to do to show hunting in a very positive way , a lot of these so called hunting men done see the big picture, cave man behaviour ill treated dogs only bring the attention of the authorities those type of people cause more trouble for hunting by there actions than any anti or ispca, uspca jmho, atb Craic

..authorities..their a charity same as the uspca, they have no rights to be invited to snoop about peoples dogs

hit them in the pocket, let them go to court and try and get an order to snoop about,

maybe take ,fair out of the name.a fair is for buying n selling livestock.

Are you for real? To suggest I should change the name of an event which I established 38 years ago to promote and defend countrysports in Ireland because people want to turn a fast buck by selling dogs of dubious quality from dubious sources. Are you really suggesting we should let people sell poor conditioned possibly disease ridden animals at the fair without any restrictions?

ime only sayin a fair is for buying and selling livestock, like appleby, lammas fair, the puck fair, ect.all free entry like all fairs.maybe its described wrong if you cant trade animals.

People know that at these fairs the selling of livestock is allowed at ours it is not - personally I don't consider dogs to be livestock and don't think they should be traded as such at our fair or anywhere else.

Now this is my final comment on this; The Garda asked us to deal with a problem about which they had public complaints. We attempted to do this through publicity and notices which were ignored by people looking to make a fast buck through selling dogs of doubtful origin and health. Due to the complaints from the public/Garda the ISPC got involved to address this specific problem and NOTHING else. . As far as I am aware the FACTS are that they only addressed this problem and no one who was racing or showing their dogs was hassled or affected in any way. Any rumours suggesting anything else should be ignored.

I'll never go again anyway that's for certain at the gate I was informed that a child over the age of 10 is classed as an adult and that you had to pay adult price which I refused to of course, an adult is 18 or over in the republic of Ireland,I wonder did the Guards and ISPCA pay their way at the gate??Then I had the ISPCA sticking their noses into my business question me about my dogs trying to push their sick twisted agenda on me it was at this stage I got back into the car and headed home pure waste of a day,Oh does any one no if the man in question that was told to leave get a refund he was "made" pack away all his dogs in the blistering heat one of the warmest days of the year, any way thats me done with that place.

I thought I was finished with this but had to reply to such absolute nonsense. Firstly the admission fee was and has always been €15 ADULT and €5 for a child between 5 and 15 . Unless your child was a very old looking 10 - the fee would have been €5. The ISPCA would not have had any contact with you unless you were trying to sell dogs or pups. AND as you know we made it clear on HL and elsewhere that the Garda had requested we try to prevent the selling of pups and dogs. The man who was requested to leave by the GARDA was refunded his money - although he like you claimed to have been charged DOUBLE the entry fee. The dogs that he had for sale were in poor condition and very miserable animals from doubtful sources and I find it truly appalling that anyone had sympathy for him. These dogs were not there to be shown or raced but to be exploited and to exploit anyone silly enough or sympathetic enough to purchase them. Most genuine doggy men welcomed him being asked to leave as this sort of activity generates public complaints to Garda and ISPCA and does the terrier & lurcher fraternity and country sports in general no good whatsoever.

The child in question was 12 years old and the man at the gate informed me that a child over the age of 10 was classed as an adult and that admission was 15 euro thats what happened, and I had dogs there but not for sale I still got hasselled and so did others, and a man being forced to load up all those dogs in that heat is just down right cruel and morally wrong no matter what the cercumstances were the organisers of this avent should be ashamed of them selves but I very much doubt it because profit and money is the bottom line with then nothing more and nothing less.

I seen the dogs in question briefly they all appeared to have food and water and I didnt notice any ill treated dogs any way this is the republic of Ireland and surely only a dog warrden with the supervision of a vet would have authority to seize dogs not the ISPCA and certainly not the Gardai.

They were miserable looking he only put out food because he knew they were going to say something. If you think that's what well minded dogs look like maybe you should have a good look at yourself. If I had dogs like that I wouldn't bring my friends into my yard to see them never mind bring them to a game fair

As I previously stated in my earlier reply I briefly seen the dogs all appeared to have food and water I didnt notice any that were ill treated or under wait and I never said any were well minded either.

Hatch, If you were in any way hassled by the ISPCA please give me details ( byPM) and I will make a formal complaint as their only role there was to prevent the sale of dogs and pups and the threat to their welfare. As Shane said the dogs owned by the person I asked to leave were in miserable condition, from doubtful sources and most of them filthy - I saw two that he 'sold' or gave away limping away. Apart from the complaints they generated I felt they were an infection hazard to other dogs at the fair.

If it had been up to me I would have taken the dogs from him but I personally felt I did not have right to do anything other than stopping him from pursuing his pernicious trade in canine misery at our event. The ISCPA could and would probably have taken the dogs from him but I felt I should deal with this matter personally.

NOW FACT : This person was not there to SHOW the dogs but to SELL them to anyone foolish or sympathetic to purchase them. He certainly cannot be viewed as a REAL terrier or lurcher man but someone trying to make a fast buck by trading poor quality unwanted dogs. Anyone who knows anything about terrier or lurchers could see that these dogs were unfit for work, unfit for showing and unfit for racing. He knew from our publicity and signs that we were not allowing the sale of pups or dogs and decided to chance his arm. As I say his display of dogs brings unwanted complaints about the terrier & lurcher area and fraternity to the Garda and ISPCA and he certainly does no good to the image of the terrier and lurcher world or to country sports.

It may interest you to know that I have had several dozen messages of support from true terrier and lurcher men supporting his removal - I cannot understand how anyone could sympathise with him.

A Tribute to the late John Shaw who passed away  last Thursday 6th November 25

      I Am Free
Do not grieve for me now my  friends and family, I am free
I am following the path God Laid for me
I took his hand when I heard him call
I turned my back and left it all
I could not stay another day
To Love, to live, to hunt, to show my treasured Whippets, or play.
I found a peace at close of day.
Be not burdened with the times of sorrow
I wish you the sunshine of tomorrow
Perhaps my time seemed all to brief
Do not lengthen it now with undue grief
Lift up your hearts my friends and share with me
      God wanted me now,
      He set me free.
John, we will love you forever and you will be sadly missed by your loving family and all your Country Sporting Fraternity and in the show ring.
May the Angels above give you the best seat in Heaven and may your gentle soul rest in peace.
      For Country Sports Fraternity
