walshie 2,804
A few mallards seem to be coming regularly to my pond. Earlier this morning I saw a pair asleep on the bank. Would building/buying them a duck house be a good idea or would it just make them easy prey for the foxes? Would they even use it? Yesterday I saw 3 pairs, so I assume they wouldn't share the house. I await the usual answers.
king 11,664
I have seen a few duck houses in the middle of the pond. That way mr fox would need arm bands to get to them.
jeppi26 1,855
Yes floating duck house would be best don't need to be big so you could put 4/5 out on the pond depending on the size of you pond mate
forest of dean redneck 11,190
Your going to buy a duck house for wild Ducks? Why not build a raft/pontoon float it out to middle then anchor it.if you want to have a safe roosting point for them.

irishfoxhunter 64
Better off building a few duck nest tubes for them to use in the springtime. Have a look at deltawaterfowls youtube chanel. These have been used in the states since the 70s to great sucess.

walshie 2,804
Let's just check my tools to see if I have the right ones for such a project. Router - no. Drill press - no. Planer - no. Mitre saw - no. Hammer - Yes! Shouldn't be a problem.
Mister Gain 1,759
I have seen a fox stalking a pair of canada geese on an island in the Silt Pond at Horton Kirby. It managed to grab one but didn't keep hold. Thing is that the closest part of the island to the main bank is 40ft and average depths are 6ft to 8ft, there are no bridges nor a ferry service so I can only assume it swam across.
