PeakOil 352
What has kept my head above water the past 5 years or so. 1 - Feck the TV tax off. 2 - Feck Sky / Virgin media etc off. 3 - Aldi, there was a Rolls Royce on the car park on Sunday, no it wasn't mine either. 4 - Budget, draw up a set amount to spend on things and STICK TO IT. 5 - Cheaper car. Smaller, lighter, uses a lot less juice, cheaper to tax, insure and tyres last for years rather than months. 6 - Moneysavingexpert forums. 7 - Veg oil rather than diesel. See vegoildiesel forums. 8 - Save up for things you want / need. Buy nowt on tick or with a loan. Car, insurance, flash TV, new kitchen etc. 9 - Do you REALLY NEED it or do you just want it? 10 - Savings - Have some, but have a think about protecting them should you be made redundant. Credit cards - Should be called debt cards, Avoid where possible. IF you do have one pay it ALL OFF EVERY MONTH! 11 Rainy day fund - See 10. Summat will bust and cost an arm and a leg to put right. 12 - Local butchers and market. Cheaper than the big 4 supermarkets and better quality. Eat what you grow, shoot, trap & catch. Share / exchange surplus with other like minded folk. 13 Smoke smuggled baccy or quit, the price of 'legal' tabs is a fookin joke. Ditto for alcohol, learn to brew yer own. It's only going to get more and more expensive in pubs / clubs and supermarkets as time goes on. 14 - Shop around for everything. Car insurance, buildings & contents insurance, utilities providers, savings accounts, bank account providers. Mobile phone account if you must have one, does it need to be the latest 24 month £50 quid a month flash job (£1200 in total) or will a 'free' one on a tenner - twenty quid a month tarriff do? 15 - Learn to do basic jobs yourself. Change the filters and oil on your car, plugs etc. It is easy and saves you paying a garage to do it. Never ceases to amaze me how many folk can't do simple basic maintenance on their car these days. 16 - Walk or cycle more and drive less. 17 - Cash is king. Ask if you get any discount for paying in cash. If you don't ask you don't get.
