blue staffy 145
had a staffie bitch and a 1st x bull grey bitch both picked up on the same day and brought up together they were fine until they were about 18 month old then you couldn't turn your back on them without them trying to kill each other no pack hierarchy in place prior to the pups being put together if they had been put into and existing pack then they would have learned as pups how to act in the pack you could be right mate , had older bull x at the time but he was kenneled seperate Quote Link to post
paulus 26
this may sound daft but its easier to keep a lot of dogs together than it is a couple, i know lads with up to a dozen bitches kennelled together a mixture of lurchers, terriers and spaniels and they never have any major issues, Quote Link to post
poacher28 120
urly last week a good mate lost his 7 year old bitch to a kennel fight, both bitches involved in the fight had been around eachother since day dot, had an a1 up bringin , nothing to do with how their brought up. that old chestnut is a load of shit. these bitches had superb temperment, around people and other dogs. who knows what triggerd the fight. no food involved in this case. the one bitch 4 year old the other 7. i gave him the 4 year old as a pup at 6wks old. and she was put with the older bitch from day one. never had moments trouble with ither bitches fighting. strange old situation but it does happen. 1 Quote Link to post
ruby jet 184
I've got 3 bitchs all kennelled together and I've only ever had one problem when my young bitch hit about 14/15 months old and thorght her size and weight ment she could push my half x bitch about but she soon learned her place in the pack just to add they are all fed apart and always exercised together and the last point I'd like to add is I'd never kennel a Lurcher and terrior together as it's only a matter of time and there's only ever going to be one winner ! bedwhippet 164
mine have plenty of sleeping area but usually find them all huddled together even though its not cold but, guess thats just how they like it, if i had the space to kennel the seperate i would put the two siblings together, my 13 month old on his own until my 13 week old was mature enough to not play about and jump all over him but through the day when im around let them go where they want in the garden aslong as its not in the house i wouldnt mind. kennels fihts happen just not to everyone you were an unlucky one mate all the best,, hope the terrier is ok Quote Link to post
MuddyPaws! 27
Wish I hadn't read the.. I've just put my pat and lurcher together.. Both at 9 months so they do a lot of play fighting and sometimes it gets abit vicious.. Think ill have to sortit Quote Link to post
scottish carper ingram 40
just a month ago i suffered a kennel fight between my bull x dog and my lakey russel dog, my lurcher dog and bitch were in one kennel and the terrier dog in the one next to them, i was woken to the sound of barking and wood snapping, by the time i got downstairs to the back door it was screaming and by the time i got to the kennels at the back of the garden and seperate them it had resulted in a terrier in a bad way, all skin over his back stomach, neck and legs all pulled away from the muscle, 6 puncture wounds to the chest cavity, and a gouge strait down to his spine, now 2 operations and collapsed lungs later he is making a full recovery and back to his old self, scary to think what can happen in less than 30 seconds and even scarier to think they were all kenneled together for about a month while the kennels were being modified, i have learnt the hard way even though i had seperated them to prevent it, atb ingram Quote Link to post
Gaz_1989 9,539
Cant really reply to everyone individually. Lesson learnt I guess. Why it happened I will never know. Why I ignored the advice? Why does anyone? We all have to learn ourselves. It would be a boring world if we all took all advice given. I'm going to order 3 galvanised panels and a small kennel and make a little set up for the terrier. It will be 1.5m x 1.5m with a little kennel in the corner and a plastic corrugated roof. Will this be big enough for 6-12 months until I have my Brick kennels built? Cheers Gaz Quote Link to post

Gaz_1989 9,539
Thanks mate. Thats what I was going to say before. For every person who told me not to take the risk another person said it would probably be alright and to try it. Cheers Gaz Quote Link to post
northern lad 2,292
Unlucky Gaz,but it could have been a lot worse,as you say one person says its ok,next says it wont, you could only do what you felt right,my dogs live in so havent had to make this decision, but being honest if i was to kennel them I think I would have listened to everyones opinions .....and done the same as you keep your chin up mate, everybody makes mistakes in life ATB Dave Quote Link to post

My lurcher, in a moment of high excitement, lifted my terrier bitch (her best mate) by the head recently and shook her for a few seconds, causing injury. I was there and able to stop it, otherwise it would have likely been lights out for the terrier. It was a real sickener for me. When dogs are left kenneled together........there is no escape, especially if you are not there 24/7 to step in, and realistically, who is? Quote Link to post
Guest bullterrier
heres my take on some of the points raised, bird i disagree that hounds are in any way differnt to other dogs, they only differ in as much as they are brought up in a pack environment and know to behave in that environment, the average lurcher is purchased at 6-8 weeks old and either kennelled alone or brought into the house, it will grow up without learning any pack etiquette, so its understandable that problems will occur if put in with another dog/bitch who has been brought up the same. When i was young on the estate i was raised it was normal to see packs of dogs roaming the streets, fights for higher places in the pack were common but i never saw or herd of one ever being killed as is the same with most pack animals. fights are normally bravado and signs of dominance with the odd bite to back it up, the less dominant will backdown before any real damage occurrs. dogs fighting while roaming the streets have some were to escape to mate kenneled dogs have no were to escape to why take the chance john Quote Link to post
