PeakOil 352
Britain holding on to its superpower position!!! Don't make me laugh All we are holding on to is the coat tails of the Yanks. Twenty thousand army jobs going and no aircraft carrier, still Tessa Sanderson in a dinghy in the channel with the left over 2012 javelins will have to do for now. Oh shit I forgot army barracks round the country don't benefit London, nor does the ship yards in Barrow or any of the naval bases on the coast, feck me what about the terrorists you always bleat on about and we are supposed to be so worried about. Aye scrap that and spend billions on one tiny bit of the capital city for an expensive willy waving competition. Make sure you demolish the shooting facilities after the games have finished while you are at it. Give the plebs bread and the most expensive of circuses and they hopefully won't notice the cost, nor the cuts in other budgets to make sure the ego and pockets of London get a good stroking.

You've missed my point but fair enough, get it off ya chest.
PeakOil 352
You want to make a point? Go and park a Nimitz size aircraft carrier in the Middle East or off the Horn of Africa. Unless we plan to send the boy scouts in while they are all watching the £27 million pound opening ceremony on TV.

Unless we plan to send the boy scouts in while they are all watching the £27 million pound opening ceremony on TV. I'm not sure I follow you? I'm just saying hosting such a grand Olympics is just about image, a cock measuring contest as you put it. What part of what I said was wrong exactly? Britain IS still classed as a world superpower, not THE world superpower but one of. A subjective term though I suppose. Hosting one of the biggest Olympics in history is just one way of flaunting that to the world. I personally think our military is a bit more capable than you make out but on the whole I agree with you, spending £10Bn on our forces would be more effective in supporting our image of a world superpower. scothunter 12,609
Been a wee while since we were a super power . Still got a sting in the tail, but we're way down the table, these days. Sad but true.

Born Hunter 17,960
Been a wee while since we were a super power . Still got a sting in the tail, but we're way down the table, these days. Sad but true. Way down the table? We are one of only 3 true Blue water Navies, one of only perhaps 5 nations to have thermonuclear weapons, our airforce has arguably the best air superiority fighter in the world (admittedly the Russians have out done us). It depends how you define superpower but we are still sitting in that category in a lot of people opinions. Feck it, I agree with what you and Peak oil are saying for the most part anyway. Back to topic, my only point was that hosting such a grand event is one way Britain is trying to hold on to it's place in that prestigious club. Whether we are or not wasn't my point. It's all about image. Like an upper class family hosting a ball at their country estate, lol. Edited July 6, 2012 by Born Hunter

gnasher16 31,602
From a sporting point of view im looking forward to the athletics....not much else really interests me.....shooting,volleyball,white water rafting they,re not sports... From a political point of view i couldnt give a shit if theres better things to spend the money on.....we,ve sacrificed enough in this country if holding onto sport, one of our strongest and oldest traditions is going to cost a few bob we dont really have then sod it im all for it...............maybe it will mean we cant afford so many new mosques next year ! The Yanks pulled our chain during the the Suez crisis, and seen to that.. A great power yes, barely.

Born Hunter 17,960
Malt, you're of course spot on. I was wrong in my terminology. There is only one superpower currently. I just meant as one of the elite powers in the world, one of the great powers. My bad. Gnash, is a sport not any physical game/event that is competitive? For me, it's the non purist events that are often the most interesting to watch.
