Otters

They must be more abundant than people think, I know of 3 road kill otters within about a 3 mile radius of where I live within the last couple of months. Also two different local lads that have bolted one when out looking for foxes in the season.

would i be right in sayin downsouth use to hunt otters i add the pleasure to talk to him while at a gamefair and it seemed he done a bit in his time

In all the years ive been diging both now and pre ban i have only ever come across two to ground.The first was beside a river which ran out of one of the best brown trout lakes in europe.We were beating out a small bank of furs or whins as some call them and the terrier went to ground in these.We found and dug to the dog close up with a very big dog otter which was a very hard challenge for any dog.The second i bolted with a little lakey bitch in an area where there is no waterways for at least 2mile so it seems they dont always stick to water.They were both pre ban and ive only seen a few since.that one today was the first in a long time on this river.

what dog would the old timers have used at otters befor the ban ?????

Was a hard dog the best type for working otter then? Or just what you worked at the time? From previous bits I've read on working otters with terriers I got the impression a good otter was quite a match for a terrier, really being able to deal out some grief but at the same time quick like a fox (not that a fox cant deal out serious punishment) and also readily bolting????

 

Anyway, the days of being able to legally work the 3 main quarry (fox, badger and otter) with a terrier must have been incredible.

 

I wonder if any of our american friends work otter? Not sure of the laws over there but I know they have seasons to trap them...

They were what i kept at the time.Nothing special to look at but good honest workers,i think a sounder was the better dog for otter as they were known to bolt easily enough.
