You don't have to treat it. My mother had an elderly lab that became diabetic. The vet offered twice daily tablets, but said in a dog of this age it probably won't make any difference to length or quality of life. Just make sure the dog always has access to plenty of fresh water.

Wear a dust mask is the only practical thing. I know people with horses who steam PR soak their hay to get the dust out (horses can get dust allergies apparently) but not really doable for straw bedding.

It is one my to watch list. I very much enjoyed 'Stalingrad' as that gave Gean perspectives as well. One of my favourite books as a boy was on the Waffen SS. I wrote my A level history thesis on the Waffen SS in the East, and the symbolic clash of ideologies. Joachaim Peiper was a larger than life character for me, as was Otto Skornzeny. The latter's rescue of Mussolini from the mountain is straight out of a Jason Stantham film.
