    I have dug dogs at 10ft plus that you could hear plain as day from an entrance without trying, I've dug dogs at 2/3 ft and not been able to hear a peep until almost breaking in, I've also dug dogs in a single entrance earth that has been an unbelievable distance and depth from the entrance, also rangy shallow places where you can hear the dog all over the place! You will have all had these or similar experiences and my point is that sometimes I don't care if you got the senses of a bat or what your name is you ain't gonna find a dog without the locator leaving the skills outlined useless!     As already stated terrier work is very basic really once you have an entered reliable dog, put him in let him settle dig him out, it really is that simple! I think we're missing the bigger picture here and the art probably lies more in the stockmanship rather than the actual act itself, selective breeding, rearing and running on young dogs, that's the hard part in my opinion!     Personally I think it has improved terrier work in lots of ways, dogs are being used in places that you wouldn't even consider without a locator, the standard of terrier work is far superior today with owners and breeders striving for nothing but the best! Let's not forget back in the day anyone would try for a dig with any old terrier or two or even 3 !!!!     Probably not really a breed to avoid more a type of breeder! There are very good in a lot of breeds but if the breeder your buying from is not genuine then the breed is irrelevant! Decide the type you want and then hunt for a genuine enthusiast, if the guy your buying from is using said breed for same as you require you have hell of a lot more chance than someone who's bred his bitch to try and line his pocket!     Met a fella whilst out one morning and as I approached him at an earth I could hear his dog baying, got one in?I enquired. Nah he's on scent came the reply, sure enough a couple of minutes later out comes dog and off they go! I guess you could argue that at least the guy new his dog was on scent but it's not for me, if a dog cracks up I expect him to be on! Each to there own I guess, but that's my preference. Atb

    What a f@&£@g stupid statement! We are talking about terriers bred for working, so obviously they are bred for that purpose. No one said anything about budgies or Doberman being sheepdogs WTF! The question quite simply was do we think good terriers are born or made? Obviously the breeder is going to ensure to the best of his ability that they are bred for the job, but anyone who knows terriers will tell you that this ensures nothing!     Born! If it ain't got the minerals you can bring it on anyway you want and it just won't happen. Is a no brainier really and anybody who knows about earthwork will say the same. It's luck of the draw that's why you get occasional good dogs out of shite and really well bred litters that come to nothing! Is all about trying to increase your chances. You can ruin a good dog but you can't make one!

    Sealyham for me, never owned a pure one but had a Sealyham russell years ago. She was a tidy bitch to ground and above, not a world beater but she'd be welcome back in my kennel! If I thought I could get a good one that's what I'd like.

    You will find that everyone will have different ideas on these subjects, obviously everyone has varying degrees of time that they can spend with their pup. I like to spend as much time as I can with it when very young letting kids play with them etc so they become well socialised, but regards leaving them till they are 8 months sounds crap to me, as long as you don't go crazy you can do little bit with them right away I think, ball a sock up an roll it for them to fetch, only a couple of times a day. And lead training can be done far earlier too, but it can depend on your pup, is it shy or bo

    Hw100 is an outstanding airgun, utter quality. But they ain't light either if weight is an issue for you! Other than that cannot fault the gun on anything. Atb
