    Alright Deker? How's tricks? I was going to drop you a pm about the WMR. I seem to remember that you mentioned it in another thread a while ago. I must admit, I was leaning toward a SAK. The only other contender was the Ase Utra Dual. It is not that expensive in the scheme of things. I use Jet-Zs on my centerfires. Sound moderation is good with them, but they are damn HEAVY! Funnily enough I was looking at a CZ as my first choice for the WMR. How do you find yours? Is it picky when it comes to ammo? Would there be any benefit getting a 455 over a 452? Cheers. Tremo

    Thanks Neil. Yes, I've viewed al the Fireball and Rem footage on YouTube. Excellent stuff. I might take another look at the .17 Hornet before I make a decision. My .223 is my main goto fox gun, just like you. The plan for my new .17 will be aimed at the smaller stuff, initially. Once again, thanks for all the advice. I'll let you know how I get on. Cheers.     Cheers mate. Like I said, this .17 centerfire world is new territory for me. I owned a HMR a year or two ago but was very disappointed in its performance and the inconsistency of the factory ammo. It had to go. I did initially consider the .17 Hornet, but I thought that the ballistics were to close to that of my .223. SGC have the Fireball in the Remmy 700. £736 at the moment. Like you say, a fair whack to spend on a rifle that you know will require aftermarket work. How does the barrel hold out in your FB? I believe that the .17 Rem is a bit of a barrel burner at those kind o

    Thanks for the info on the moddy stillair1. Yes I reload. That's was my plan with the .17CF. I'm still undecided if it will be a .17 Rem or a Fireball. I don't know if the .17 Rem is still in production, so I'm guessing that it will have to be a pre-owned rifle. I see that Remington are manufacturing the Fireball in the model 700 model, but I don't know of any other manufacturers that are building them new (?). How do you find the FB for hunting stillair1?     Good evening chaps. I'm shortly going to be acquiring two new rifles, a .22 WMR and a .17 centrefire (.17 Rem or .17 Fireball). Not having a great deal of experience with these rounds I would like a little advice (from your personal experience) on what moderators to select. I currently use a SAK on my .22LR and find it excellent with subsonic ammo. My centrefires use Ase Utra Jet-Z's. The sound moderation is excellent with these but the downside is their weight. What would you recommend for my new rifles? Tremo

    I have to point out that I use IR for foxing, and not the red or the green. Also the NM IC wasn't around when I picked up mine. Would I go for an IC model? It depends on the price difference and if I would see the benefit of having brightness control. Personally I have mine belting out full blast with the XSearcher for foxing so I have no need for the dimmer. I've also had my original NM IR pill pimped-up to an AS one. It is cheap enough and you wouldn't believe the difference. I would definitely recommend the larger XSearcher head for foxing though. Before you take the plunge with

    I purchased the NM800 with the standard head. I picked up a XSearcher head a few months later and have been using it ever since when I go foxing. I only switch back to the standard head when I'm shooting at closer ranges, which seems to be very rarely these days.

    10 minutes you say? I use Duracells (2400mAh) and I don't get a problem with them in any of my gear. I always take spares of course for the longer trips.

    I use my .223 in the night and my .22-250 in the day. My night shots are rarely past 200m, so the .223 is more than sufficient for Charlie. Besides that any further and I need my binos as my eyesight is crap but I never want to wear my specs!

    It depends on what you want. If 1" is good for you then stick with factory ammo as Deker says. Personally I prefer reloading. I have the same rifle as you (mine is a 1 in 12) and I can do sub 1" at 200 yards all day long. One of the rounds that I load for also uses 55gr Nosler Varmageddon, if that is the weight that you require. There are loads of threads on here that have covered .223 reloading. ATB

    I did eventually make it out last night. I went out knowing that I was using some new brass (I don't resize new Lapua brass) so I did expect some spread/variation in the results. Results? Over 10 shots the average came out as 3365 fps. The spread was around 50fps. My last three shots gave a single ragged hole (170 yards). Nectar! This was using: Lapua Brass Fiocchi primers Nosler 40gr BTs 29.0gr CFE223 I'm going to reload this fire-formed brass and repeat the exercise next week.

    Nah, crimping isn't for me. Some people swear by it though. I decided to bite the bullet (pardon the pun) and buy myself a chrongraph. If the weather holds off I'll get out later and rattle a few rounds through it. . Info to follow ..........

    I would have to agree. I initially tried the 52gr AMAX. It is a longer bullet and no matter what COALs I used my results were like a shotgun. I gave up in the end. I seat my Nosler BTs at 15 thou off the lands to get the best results. Get this though, I can also seat them 40 thou off the lands and get similar results. The rifle hates anything inbetween though, and greater than 40 thou. Ballistics eh?

    No worries mate. They do quite a selection of magnifications if I recall, from the Crossfire though to the Viper. If the truth be know, I can't see much difference between the glass on my Viper and the glass Nikon Monarch. I would definitely buy Vortex again.

    The crows seem to be doing a fair job of that at the moment. I would have shot those buggers first and worried about the fox after. Have you never heard of the old adage "................ a crow in the hand is worth a fox in the bush"??

    I clean mine ever time I get back after a foray. It could be just 1 round fired, or it could be 50 rounds. I try to let the barrel cool between shots. There is a very noticeable POI change when my barrel heats up (not just warm, I mean hot ).
