  1. Was there a big difference in the POI of the different rounds?
  2. Deker - have you shot a chrono ???
  3. Anyone know what the recommeded distance from the muzzle for a chrono - rimfire and air rifle?
  4. Those recommended by reaper seem to be the thing. XTAR are supposed to be a good make. Apparently there are quite a few fake Ultrafire's about.
  5. Thanks for the advice, I'll have a look at the rechargeables.
  6. DIY ??? Dead easy ! I use a piece of water pipe insulation and carve it to the exact fit for my cheek. Tape it to the stock, try it then pop a neoprene sleeve over it.
  7. I have a Hawke 3x12-50 AO.IR mildot on my 1417 and it's fine, nowhere near as big as the Hawke Airmax I have on the hmr (about 5" shorter). My eyes are poor but I find x10 is good for up too 100 yards. It was about £130 new. I laid out some targets at various ranges to get the dots spot on.
  8. The one that came out of the torch is 65mm long (think it was an Ultrafire or similar). I've seen the protected ones but don't know if I need 'protected' or not. I wasn't planning on getting rechargable so does it matter?
  9. Thanks Ian, I can find plenty, just though I'd try one that was recommended. Yeah, the nights are getting warmer, need to stock up.
  10. Some time ago I saw a post on here recommending a guy on E-bay for batteries. Anyone know who it is ?
  11. I dropped it - or rater, it fell over when propped against a trailer whilst I was spotting. Fell flat on it's side. The zero was only out by a small margin and I only noticed the problem when trying to make minor adjustments. I've got it spot on again now.
  12. IanB - just out of interest, before you start using your Lilgun keep a few of those loaded with H110 to one side. When you have both fire a few together and see if you think that one powder is louder than the other ! 3157Darren - if you have a Lee kit it will contain both the neck and full length sizing dies. Search for resizing and you will find opinions are varied. If you are starting loading for a Hornet I would recommend an expander die and a crimp die as well.
  13. I might try getting a seamstress to sew a couple of waterproof patches on some regular trousers, I don't need anything too warm as I've turned into a warm weather shooter with my advancing years. Some of the overtrousers seem to crinckle a bit, too noisy. Whilst I'm at it I need to find some springy boots !! Jumping over barbed wire fences at my age is getting harder - not so much the jumping but the landing !!
  14. Is it unusual for a scope to take a couple of shots to "settle" after you have turned the turrets to adjust POI? I knocked my scope last night so went out today to check the zero. First group was left and a little low, three clicks right and two up. Next shot went in the same place then the others moved right and up. This happened a couple of times as I moved the reticule.
  15. I'll have a look at the Dickies pads. I did wonder about those nylon gaiter things walkers wear but not sure how well the would stay up.
  16. Well, I suppose if I was a real yokel I could just kneel on the bottom of my smock !!
  17. Any suggestions on keeping my knees dry when kneeling down to shoot in wet grass, apart from full overtrousers. I like to kneel down with an extended bipod at night.
  18. IanB - I found the same, neck sizing only tightens the neck and does nothing for the shoulder and case body. I ended up full length sizing about ever four loads plus I think the neck tension was better with full length.
  19. That 22-250 does some serious damage. It's easy to forget just how powerful some of these rifles we shoot really are. I've just sold the Hornet as I didn't need quite that much gun !
  20. I wish you hadn't said that - I've been trying to persuade myself to go to work for a week - ever since I got my new Sako !!!
  21. Just remember to keep it clean, not necessarily the barrel but the chamber and bolt face soon get gummed up with powder residue and lube off the bullets causing cycling issues. With my 10/22 I use an old rotary toothbrush to get up through the magazine well to clean the front of the chamber.
  22. With a 10/22 you will also find out which brand of ammo cycles well, some do better than others in a semi-auto. having done considerable testing I settled on Eley and SK/Lapula subs.for mine.
  23. Hi Scott, I would advise you to forget about fox for a while, start out with rabbits but only after you have had considerable practice shooting targets. A .22lr is a good beginners rifle but not really suitable for fox. The .17hmr is used by many on foxes but most would agree that you need to be experienced, have excellent shot placement skills and the self control not to attempt shots that are not ideal. The hmr is an excellent rabbit rifle, less prone to ricochets than the .22lr but is noisier and more expensive to run than a .22 if you are doing a lot of practicing.
  24. That could never be called a wasted day. Just think, you could have been stuck in a city somewhere.
