  1. deker those chrono speeds are mikes. he uses different powders to me and has a factory rifle. the only reason i can see ? i get faster speeds is mine is a custom barrel and tighter chamber cut to min sammy spec there is nothing wrong with the calibres you have above i like different rifles.my mates have 223 i went 22/250 they went 204 i went 17 cf, they have 243 and 308 i went with 270. i guess i like speed demons they kill know better, dead is dead. it just gets there a little faster one thing i would say is i wouldnt have hmr,22wmr and a 22lr. yes there different tools in there
  2. Cheers for this, and I make the point again I ask out of curiosity, I'm not having a go at the 17, just trying to understand. You are certainly limited on .243 ammo choice at 4000 ft sec, but it can be done, I have used it, excellent and of course frangible! Much 17 doesn't make it that fast anyway as attested in previous posts here. How much for 17 ammo? MORE than .243 commonly if you can find it I understand. Help me out with this reloading question as well from a couple of posts back, which someone hasn't responded to, is this me going mad or is someone GENUINELY suggesting t
  3. deker i know light bullets in a 243 are fast but i dont know of many doing over 4000 fps. the 20 vmax in a 17 can easy do that. also a 17 rem with 25 vmax's can do that. there bullets are perfect for rabbting and foxes also. i wouldn't like to use a 243 on rabbits all the time what is the point ? not only are you burning a hell of alot more powder. in the 243 but you also get more recoil, and the safety side of the little 20 grain pills in the 17 are alot better. yes you still have to be careful but they very rarely exit. and are ideal on some shoot where ground might be a little to i
  4. i would look up winchester stealth also i had one as my 1st 22/250. very accurate. and had a solid h&s stock on it.
  5. depends on how many i fire in a night. if its not to many i just patch it out clean. then after next times shooting carbon and copper clean it with nylon brush
  6. with my 170 i use a 18amp one. and last all evening
  7. Mainly because any rifle that is self loading (read semi-auto) or pump action falls outside section one of the firearms act, with the exception of .22 rimfire calibres. This poor draughting of the legislation means it is legal to own a .22WMR semi auto (upwards of 300 ft.lb) but it is illegal to own a .17HMR in semi auto, even though it only puts out about 200 ft.lb. don't forget the firearms laws are old now and to be fair they need updating. the only reason a 17 hmr in semi auto form is illegal is because the hmr wasn't even out when those laws where wrote.
  8. take the average then put that into your ballistic data for a drop chart
  9. mate there are some good pegs back at seven stoke on the seven on the a38 back from you to Worcester. my mate does alot of fishing on the teme also along the the bypass from Worcester to Malvern. he has been catching them to 9 lbs in last couple of weeks. as well as 7's and 8 lb barbel. also cracking big chub
  10. i would go for the 170. if you have a bigger calibre in the future. you will prob upgrade again. so save your money and buy once. my mate has a scope mounted 170 for sale for 65 pound. with the scope mount etc, brand new bulb and rewired as the standard wiring on them leaves alot to be seen
  11. hi mike you thinking about getting a comp die for the fireball ? should have said i just sold the comp seater for £75 brand new in the box never used. they had doubled up on my order from Sinclair's. the redding comp i have for the fireball seams abit better built then the rcbs comp die i have for the 22/250. between the two go for redding. mind both give great ammo for my rifles. if i was starting over again though i would go for a wilson set and press
  12. its the ammo guys. i had a annie 1517 hmr and it was lovely and accurate. then some days different batches of poor ammo would open the groups right up. in the end I got rid and that's why me and my dad had the 17 fireball done instead. more power, better accuracy, and most of all consistent groupings. dont get me wrong the hmr is a good little rabbit and the odd fox rifle. but the price of ammo going up for it and the poor consistency peed me off in the end
  13. my dad was telling me the other day. he use to have a fox terrier back in the early 80's he was strong as a ox and would get stuck in. as the one guy before said though he had problems with other dogs. he wasn't as bad when out in the field. but when in the garden at home he was a different dog. next doors terrier got under the fence one day and couldn't make it back before my dads fox terrier got to him. he ripped his throat out ! when my dad got home and his old man told him what happened he had to go round next doors to say sorry !!! i will see later if he has some pictures of him.
  14. no mate the compact has a bigger exit hole the one you want for the 223 is the ase cqb. mine is a m14x1 thread. though you can get the nut in the back changed to suite what ever thread you have. i have had the nut in the back of the ase mod changed a couple of times. to suite different rifles. my local gunsmith does it for £25 that is to supply the new nut and to change it. to change it you need the right socket. and a vice. i then sell off the spare nut which you can get £10 for.
  15. they do look and perform very well. my mate dave has one on his 6 br rifle. if i was after a over barrel mod i would have one. im happy with the ase mods though i have three. .. two ase cqb mods from new. and a ase compact which i got secondhand for £200 . they can be picked up at a good price secondhand. i would like to sell one of the ase cqb mods in the future and get the little brother the cqbs for my 17 fireball
  16. mike there is a guy in the states called scott parker. he does tuned beam scales. i hear there that accurate they will show on a single grain of powder. he doesnt do rcbs 10/10 or 505 scales though. as he told me he cant get them as accuracte as the 502 and older lyman scales
  17. best of luck mate. I am sure in a year or two your look back and think that was the best thing I have ever done. hope it all works out for you
  18. if your going to get some digital scales you got to spend a good amount on them. if you want accuracy and consistent loads. my mate had a Lyman which as you know cost a fair bit. and he was never happy with it. he then sold it and got a set of rcbs 505 scales. and a target master trickler to help speed up the reload time of using manual scales. he is more then happy with it now. and says it is a lot better then his Lyman. acculab scales are prob the best. but even though they are digital. they don't dispense the powder like the charge master or Lyman you have to load it by hand like
  19. i havent used it yet mate so cant comment really. i went by what my friends who have them told me. there cheap to buy as there not popular. yet in the usa there one of the best calibres going for hunting. there flat shooting. but my mate downloads his and uses it from munty to reds up in scotland
  20. sorry guys it is the striker not the lance your right.
  21. i have a 22lr for the bunnys a 17 fireball for bunnys and fox, a 22/250 for vermin fox and munty and cwd and i have just got a cheap tikka m695 in 270 winchester. hoping to get on some stalks over this next year
  22. What action do you normally take jamie when theres a large variation in the heads or depth.. these 20 vmax im loading for my 17 fb are shocking if going to the tip. they are all different lengths. but as long as the ogive measurement are around the same i wouldnt worry to much. for vermin and fox i dont think your tell much difference ian.
  23. 25/06 is a good one. 70 grain bullets up to 120 grain bullets. not alot of them about though. thats why i went for a 270 in the end as there cheap as chips. something on a tikka m695 action is very good for the money. trouble is the 25/06 and 270 do use alot of powder if you do a lot of foxing it can work out dear. at the moment you have a good mixture of calibres so i would think long and hard about it
  24. used but in very good condition, this has been fully rewired by an electrician, it has a brand new 100w vertical filament bulb and comes with the scope/barrel fitting, £65 plus postage. i am selling this for a mate who is having trouble with his internet at moment. so i said i would put it up on here for him. [/indent]
  25. are you sure its the valve and not the o ring.
