I had a standard poodle dog, great temperament, very biddable, great nose and 100% retriever, jump for fun and could run all day. I wonder if everyone knocking them could say the same of their chosen type of lurcher?.

Had a conversation in a pub years ago with a young female student who was lecturing me on the disgraceful way we treated immigrants, legal and illegal. In the news that week it was reported that the coastguard had picked up two illegals trying to cross the channel on a oversized lilo, add to that the risks they were running trying to sneak through the tunnel stowing away on high speed trains etc. My question to her was, if we treat them so badly why do they continue to come here?, risking life and limb to make the final stage of the journey after having passed through lord only knows how many

I occasionally walk the dogs where I grew up and to look now through the eyes of a middle aged man it's scary, a big old oak tree rope swing (the oaky) which when you were out at full tilt over the river clyde was a hell of a height, coming back in screaming no boarders (two chances) as all and sundry (girls too) launched themselves at you. Then there was the railway viaduct cat walk we practically lived up there in the summer, God only knows what height that was. We pranced along rail lines without a thought, jumped on the back of any horse or cow (anyone have a cowshit fight?) waded rivers

Totally agree, I have two jills just turned five years old, never seen a hob snipped or entire and both in good health, had jills live to double figures and have one maybe two litters. I don't know where this get them out of season or they'll die comes from. Certainly caught on in here though the local experts trip it out at every opportunity.

Personally I think anyone who opts to judge a show wants their head examined, they make three people happy and a damn sight more very bitter, not an ideal situation. I'd pick up on what someone posted earlier about judges knowing what they're looking for and being experienced regarding dogs, I've witnessed (as others will have) people judging that have been in the dog game twenty minutes, go through dogs like underwear but are considered to be more knowledgeable than your average lurcherman simply because of the volume of dogs they've owned. I like my weimaraners, but then I've never owned a visla but the ones I have seen, well I'd describe them as soft. A good weimaraner from good working lines are like hens teeth nowadays, if however you manage to locate one (and not the pet/ show shit going about) I'd stick with them. What I would say though is that they certainly benefit from a one on one relationship as they are very demanding.

Personally I'd attribute the qualities mentioned to the bearded collie myself, but I suppose it depends from which angle your looking at it from.
